Series Thread Disclaimer: The SoxProspects Moderators will be somewhat liberal in policing the Red Sox "Series" Threads. Some of the Ground Rules are applied loosely in here, as we understand that there is a tendency to want to react (or overreact) to every play of a Sox game with one line reactionary posts. Those posts are okay in the Red Sox Series threads to a point - we certainly appreciate the passion. Just try not to overdo it, and try to maintain some semblance of reason. In addition, please don't let those type of posts spill over to other more substantive threads, where they may be deleted. -The Management

Other people having issues with mlb.tv today? Had them but it's working now, seems the broadcast was just delayed.

Let's just say Victorino is quickly playing his way off this team.
We're at the point that there is no way he should be the "starting RF for this team"

Other people having issues with mlb.tv today? I'm not watching, but I'm having trouble with Gameday. It shows Betts having 2 ABs but no hits or walks ... must be some kind of bug.

I am disappointed that Hinojosa makes only a single appearance in the prediction game thread.

I am disappointed that Hinojosa makes only a single appearance in the prediction game thread. I actually tried to find a place to put him in but couldn't quite convince myself he was breakout or comeback or any other categories ... but I think he'll be a good bullpen arm in Boston this year. I'm optimistic about him

One of these days I will try to understand the balk rule.

Rusney should be the starting RFer.

Rusney should be the starting RFer. I don't that that there is much of an argument against Castillo as the starting RF.

Okay, I get that Victorino has the higher salary, but why does he command anything? If they can't trade him and Rusney is/could be a better player than him, why not give him the starting job? It seems so simple and ah my eyes, my eyes, help!

I think Victorino is more apt to hurt himself than improve his trade value if he is the starter in RF. If they are going to play someone for the sake of improving his trade value, I'd rather it be Allen Craig.

Bleh, just when I was getting used to baseball games being at watchable times, it's back to 1 AM starts. Fortunately, condensed games should start being available soon.

I believe the intent here is to trade Victorino. But who would want him unless they can see what he can do and whether he's healthy and can be a regular? Hopefully that showcase is brief and Rusney can soon be installed as our regular RF.

The thing is whether Castillo is so much better than Victorino that dealing with the fallout is worth it. Is losing all your trade leverage by DFA'ing Victorino really better than going with Victorino for a month and trading him if he stays healthy, or DL'ing him if he doesn't? Realistically, even if we all agree that Castillo is the better option in a vacuum, over the course of a full season, what are the odds that Castillo is, say, 2 full wins better? Now prorate that for a month or two. Not that every win isn't important, but it's not like it's a decision between Castillo and a rookie-ball outfielder.

I'll be on the record stating that we release Sizemore after about 50 games and then finally call Nava back up to the majors. Oops, I meant Victorino and Castillo.

This doesn't really refute my point though. It's not like the decision to keep Sizemore cost them a playoff berth or something.

It's not like the decision to keep Sizemore cost them a playoff berth or something. to elaborate by using an old cliche: "It's a marathon, not a sprint" I still think a 4 OF rotation with Nava as the backup 1B/PH is the best way to go for now. Sitting Hanley/Mookie on occasion to get them a little rest (in addition to heavy rest for Victorino) isn't so bad for a month or two.

Obviously not, but if they finished a game out of the wild card, you could look back at that and say that decision cost them. I don't think we could make a bet like this, but I actually would say that the difference between Castillo and Victorino would be at least 2 wins.

Not sure how I feel about Masterson today just from listening to the radio ... obviously, the results were good, and the announcers were impressed by his execution, but his fastball was still sitting ~90mph. Maybe that's still spring training intensity and will tick up once we get to the season. I guess we'll see.
Just one week to go ... team looks pretty good.

The Twins lineup is not exactly fearsome, but Masterson was definitely locating his pitches, and they all showed movement once he got rolling. This was encouraging, but I'm not going to hold my breath. He'll be challenged if his velocity hovers at that level. Overall however, yes, he looked much better.
