Sox stole one tonight. I'll take it. Stole a couple in NY, too, if we go by ERs. Some pretty ugly fielding going on out there. MFs had 2 more errors tonight; Balt 1.

“@shesta_Sox: Boston is the 1st team in the expansion era (since 1961) to score 3+ runs in an inning with no hits and no walks (Source: Elias).” ...and the Nationals are the first team to pave the way for that magic.

@timbritton: Aaron Harang is the only starting pitcher to complete the sixth inning against the Red Sox so far this season. Using some of the antonyms, then, instead of quality starts we get ordinary starts, flat starts, commonplace starts, and colorless starts. Take your pick.

For me, Masterson loss of velocity has been the most worrisome aspect of this team pitching...even more than Buchholz lack of consistency. 84-86 mph Sinkers? There's not SSS excuses to that! Xactly! I remember when he was with the Sox he would be in the mid 90s. A guy that big, with a sling-shot, side-arm (ish) delivery and without great control, needs the power arm to stay competitive. Beyond that we do need a reliable power arm ....perhaps two reliable arms in the pen. Not saying that he won't do it but, I changed channels when Koji came in as I feared the worst.

OK, on the road right now. Since when is Raleigh, North Carolina in Nats territory? Closer to ATL. Sheesh, blacked out. I'm in Durham. It drives me insane. No Nats or O's games. The O's are obviously a big deal for me. I'm about to go an alternate route.

I have a bad feeling about the Sox pen this year. I've watched Mujica cough up a few, Breslow not be able to get outs, Ogando put gas on Masterson's fire etc. Unless there is some marked change, I see us giving up a good number of 'in the bag' games in the late innings. Championship teams generally lock down wins when they lead from the 8th on. Koji plummeted last September, didn't do awfully well this spring before his injury, is 40, gave up 3 hits and a run against minor leaguers a couple of days ago and last night I saw a ball narrowly miss being a game tying homerun. At that point I figured I'd check out the C's....who are playing awfully well BTW.

Raleigh is much closer to DC than Atlanta. This is true. Just feels like it should be an open city or something. Not really aligned to either of those teams or Balt from what I can see. There are worse examples of blackouts. The rules are insane and most people don't know how insane they are. If you live in Hawaii, you can't watch any Padres, Dodgers, Angels, Giants or Mariners games. I think if you live somewhere in Alabama, you can't watch Cincinati Reds games.

These early starts are really annoying for those of us who work until 6 or 7. They're also really awesome for those of us who live in a time zone 6 hours ahead of yours. Also, whining about it here isn't going to change anything anyway. True. I should consider myself lucky I get the nats, o's, white sox and Cubs, plus the MLB Network and Fox Sports 1. I may just have to watch other teams games when we have day games during the week.

Hell, MASN can play their commercials during the breaks or whatever, but this is ridiculous. Anyone know Rob Manfred? I need to talk with him (also about the DH in both leagues and RoboUmps behind the plate, but mostly this).

You're exaggerating things a bit. Here are Masterson's average April sinker velos over the past few years: 2011: 92.5 2012: 90.5 2013: 91.0 2014: 89.5 2015: 87.7 (SSS/cold early season weather alert) We're no longer in SSS territory for pitch velocities. Pretty much everything else, yes, but not pitch velocities. Also, remember when 2014 was the year when Masterson was injured and he was supposed to come back healthy in 2015? If you want to buy into that narrative, then you need to compare with 2012-2013, and 3 mph is no joke.

This was prior to last night, so there was only one start's worth of velo readings, which is absolutely still small sample size territory. Single game velo readings bounce around quite a bit, especially early on in the season. Of course, the bad news is that his velo was down even more last night, and his overall average 2015 sinker velo is down to 87.3 per Brooks Baseball. Definitely not encouraging.

Small sample and all that, but looks like several of the Nats players will be pretty comfortable against Miley: Nationals vs. Miley (LHP) Danny Espinosa (9 plate appearances): .333 AVG/.333 OBP/.444 SLG, 1 double, 3 strikeouts Ryan Zimmerman (9): .571/.667/1.000, 3 doubles, 3 RBIs, 2 walks Tyler Moore (8): .375/.375/.750, 1 home run, 1 RBI Dan Uggla (8): .286/.250/.714, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 strikeouts Yunel Escobar (6): .200/.333/.200, 1 walk Bryce Harper (3): .667/.667/.667 Wilson Ramos (3): .667/.667/.667 fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2015/04/15/wednesdays-red-sox-nationals-matchups-wade-miley-vs-gio-gonzalez/#more-91819
