I'm not giving up on Uehara yet and am surprised so many of you are doing so. He has a 6:0 K/BB in 4.1 IP, a 1.50 xFIP, and a 1.33 SIERA. Yes, the walk-off home run was on a hanger, but one hanging splitter isn't enough to get me to abandon ship. Jones' triple was on a good pitch down and away and was mostly the result of bad defense from Craig, for instance. Yes, Uehara's fastball velo is down, but it's not like he was throwing 95 before, and dropping from 89 to 87 is not a career-ender-- guys like Trevor Hoffman and Sergio Romo have had sustained success in that velo range by complementing a middling fastball with an elite secondary pitch. He'll have to start throwing the fastball more as a change-of-pace to get guys from sitting on the splitter, but unless he's totally lost the high spin rate and the command of it that made it such a good pitch even at 89 (which, to be fair, is a possibility), I think he'll be fine. He'll never be 2013 Uehara again, but I have little doubt that he's still one of the two or three best relievers in the bullpen and certainly capable of being a very good closer. He's being paid 9 million a year..I am sorry...but he needs to be more than the 2 or 3 best relievers in the pen. I think he will be...but he's got to be a tick below 2013 at that price.

Hembree is just plain awful. I don't even want him taking up space in the PawSox bullpen.

Good job, Ben. You traded for the pitcher who can't throw strikes ... But. at least he doesn't throw them quickly.

This is a perfect spot to pitch Breslow. This made me laugh.

Why did they replace Barnes so fast? Dumb move.

Breslow is far too valuable. He has too many intangibles.
As much as I hated the Miley trade and extension I think it's too early to throw dirt on his coffin. But if you tune into talk radio tomorrow I'm sure you'll hear about how this all fits into the master plan as it will be Owens, Miley, Craig and Bradley for Hamels and Papelbon because that works better for the Sox and Philies get cost controlled blah blah blah.
But yeah, the squander of last night looms larger now.

Every season there is at least one game like this.

Why did they replace Barnes so fast? Dumb move. The dumb move, as I said, was hooking Miley. Anyway, I will say this in favor of Farrell... he chose a good day to give Ryan Hanigan some rest. Lotta work behind the plate today, 168 pitches and counting. I wish Farrell had left Breslow in the game. Milk him for all he's worth, DFA him tomorrow and call up Hinojosa.

I think that Koji is cooked. His FB is 85 not 89 or even 87 now. Beyond the velocity is that he now appears to have little "life" on the FB. IMO he will get by on guile and command if at all. To me a guy who throws a slow split as 90% of his arsenal is similar to a knuckleballer.....one poorly thrown or located one ( tough pitches to command) and touch 'em all. This is factually incorrect, both over the course of the season and specific to last night. Per Brooks Baseball, his fastball also has just as much movement (both vertical and horizontal) as his career marks. Uehara has always gotten by on guile and command (and, for that matter, always had home run issues). If he continues to walk noone and get a ton of swings-and-misses, he'll be fine. Unfortunately I could not open either referenced link. I watched the game on TV and Koji's readings were 85 (maybe one 86) shown on the monitor. Jerry commented that the FB was at 85. I saw one FB in the game I attended in Tampa. It registered 87 on the stadium board and was rifled into left. Jmei you know that a splitter is a hard pitch to command. As great as Tanaka's command is, he throws a few splits way short in the dirt (not purposely) or some that don't break. It is a great strikeout pitch particularly when a pitcher has a good FB in offset....same arm action, significant speed difference and a sharp drop. But a miss up, particularly when 90% of the pitches are splits (a statistic noted last evening), a batter is looking for it and there is ample time to reset for the FB....well that leaves damn little margin for error.

Well. We can say we have no pitching. As I stated 6 months ago Miley would be a disaster. The bullpen is a joke. Why is breslow in a game when were down by 9??? Farrell needs to wake up man

Garcia sure is getting a lot of work.
Holt has a 1.000 OBP in 5 PAs today.

Allen Craig is too clutch to risk bringing in a young player like Holt. Clutch. Money. Guaranteed performer. Craig is lost...he needs to be sent down so he can find his game and if he doesn't...let him go.

Pete Abraham ?@peteabe 9m9 minutes ago Farrell pretty ripped after the game. Said #RedSox need to improve in all phases starting with pitching.
Brian MacPherson ?@brianmacp 9m9 minutes ago Farrell: "We've got to do better in all phases of the game, and it starts with how we control the game from the mound."
Pete Abraham ?@peteabe 4m4 minutes ago Asked if Miley could lose his spot, Farrell didn't say no. Only that they had just come off the field. Jason Mastrodonato ?@jmastrodonato 8m8 minutes ago Farrell asked if he's evaluating Miley's spot in the rotation, said "We just walked off the field."

This bullpen is downright scary. It seems as if every team the RS have faced this season has a better bullpen roster. I'm not worried about the hitting, I feel pretty confident that it will come around, but not so with the what I've seen coming out of the bullpen. Not concerned about Farrell's decision about whom to put it or when, just don't have confidence that the pitchers he has available can stem the tide of the opposition. Methinks this should be a red flag for Ben.

If it weren't for all the unearned runs the Sox have scored, their record might be quite a bit worse. Thus the 10-9 record is a bit deceptive. So far this is not that good a team. However, it should be. How the team does in this long homestand may be a better barometer.
If things don't improve the team has quite a few options. I don't think there's going to be a lot of management patience with this kind of performance.

The Red Sox are forcing errors due to their ability to put the ball in play. The pitching, especially the bullpen, Is worrying though.

Yeah, I feel like the unearned runs are sort of canceled out by the fact that we have a bunch of guys batting 50-100 points below where they should be. In the grand scheme of things I'm not worried about scoring runs.

Wonder if Chapman and Cueto could be had for Margot +? Probably get killed on this board but the Red Sox are set in the OF for the next few years. I would be happy if they could get that done.
