Take 2/3 and we're tied for first. Pound that fat bastard tonight. Gonna have to because they're gonna hit Masterson.

Not the greatest pitching matchups in Sox/Yanks history, but they do at least match up similar storylines. Tonight is a battle between two former aces, tomorrow the battle of underachievers (one current, one former), and finally a showdown between the two young guns who are probably relievers but want to prove they're starters.

I hate these guys.
Or to quote a friend "The greatest happiness is to scatter your enemy, to drive him before you, see those who love him shrouded in tears, and to gather into your bosom his wives and daughters.”
So, yeah, win two and steal one from the very jaws of victory in a way that causes them and their fans unrelenting angst.

Starting in right field in Fenway, no less. Unbelievable. He is 16 for 128 since the trade, which is certainly better than you, I, or Shaq Thompson would do, but is still impossibly bad for someone without defensive value.

The Craig experiment needs to end, and fast.

Lost all hope with Craig starting. Holt is clearly performing better

Lost all hope with Craig starting. Well, you can always watch the NFL Draft instead.

Speaking of hope:
?@danbarbarisi 4 minutes ago Yankees are running out nine lefty/switch hitters against Boston's Justin Masterson today, righty w/ low arm angle, vulnerable to lefties.
This should be interesting, esp with Masterson's reduced velocity and spotty command of the zone so far this year.
May be a good night to check out Avengers 2, as well...

In sample sizes that are of course all too small, Masterson has allowed only a 3.51 xFIP vs LHH so far this season, compared to a 4.39 xFIP vs RHH. So perhaps we are not completely doomed yet, though his splits the previous 3 years are of course much the opposite. It will be a good test.

I may have to take Guidas' advice tonight. This team is not being put in a position to win by management.

Is my avatar still Allen Craig? I've had avatars disabled since the end of last season, and I can't remember changing mine since, well, the Craig acquisition.
Still love the guy, but saying his hitting has been a mess is a gross understatement. It may be too early to write him off as one of those guys who physically bottoms out at a youngish age, but his role on the Sox is clearly not the proper environment for him to try to resurrect things.

Masterson was solid against lefties in 2013 too - his K rate against them jumped to about 20%. Really, really bad in 2012 and 2014 though, and not very good even while having a good overall season in 2011.

Here's the thing: if you aren't going to start Craig versus a LHP while both Victorino and Castillo are injured, he really shouldn't be on the active roster at all, since you're never really going to play him (except maybe as a third-string 1B?). So really, the anger should be at the fact that he's on the roster (and not DFAed or optioned to the minors).

Brentz is tearing it up in AAA, and has hit .343 / .387 / .667 in 111 PA vs. LHP the last two years at Pawtucket (.303 / .366 / .571 in 194 PA the last three years). Depending on how quickly Rusney's rehab goes, he has a a chance to get recalled when they go back to 13 position players. But you can argue that he should be here now. In any case, it's time to send Craig to AAA and let him play every day. Rusney should have his spot even after Victorino gets healthy.
