That was really poor managing. Figured he'd have a short hook this inning given his inability to throw strikes, instead Farrell let him continue to pitch terribly until it finally resulted in runs.

I would love nothing more if that is Masterson's last start in a Red Sox uniform.
He's bad and there is no reason to expect improvement from him. I'd rather see Wright.

I have 100x more confidence in Miley going forward. Masterson needs to be DL'd, released, or moved to the bullpen (if it allowed him to throw several MPH with better control, which I guess is pretty unlikely). Without question, he is the starter that needs to be upgraded.

Masterson put 13 guys on base and only came away with 4 runs

This has resulted in a swinging strike rate of 6.1% entering this start, 3% worse than last year and indicative of his decline.

So we're going back to Mujica even though his record getting up and down is not good?

Awesome. I'm suddenly glad we haven't DFAed Mujica yet, that one play was worth it.

I forgot who mentioned this originally, but it's almost certainly part of his appeal to the front office when they signed him.

I guess Tazawa will only be pitching in games where we are behind now?

This is where it would be nice to have Matt Barnes in the bigs.

I'd be more excited about the Matt Barnes bullpen experience if I thought Farrell would use a reliever for more than three outs in a game that isn't a blowout.

Blake Swihart's gonna be a really good catcher. He's still got a few things to get just a little better on, but he's got it all.

This game is still in reach. Masterson had a bad game, and the lack of control is worrisome, especially considering the lack of velocity. I think we'll ride him out a bit longer, but eventually something will have to give. Nobody in AAA seems to be quite ready aside from Wright, who may not even be an upgrade from Masterson's current state.
I think a DL trip/conversion to relief is in order once Rodriguez or Johnson is ready to step up. Until then, we're going to have to eat his shaky performances every 5th start.

how can tampa (and nearly every other mlb team) find flamethrowers like they grow on trees? boxberger, mcgee, geltz, . . . and the red sox counter with breslow and mujica

Noticed over the past week or so Xander has been susceptible to the breaking stuff low and low and away again, reminiscent of last year. Still did a nice job turning on a ball earlier in the game, haven't seen much of that from him so far.

We have some hard throwers on the way like Light, maybe Mercedes, and Barnes if his veto ticks up out of the pen.
