Per Alex Speier's newsletter today, assuming the Red Sox have the same ~$200m AAV payroll next year as they did this year (which may or may not be a reasonable assumption-- Dombrowski said yesterday that they won't be spending less than that next year, but I could see them spending more), the front office should have approximately $32m to spend this offseason. That's a decent chunk of cash, but probably not enough to add all the pieces that folks have been clamoring for (an ace, a stud reliever or two, a fourth outfielder) solely through free agency without moving money elsewhere. To that end, there is the possibility of a trade(s) of Miley, Hanley (and at least not eating all of his salary) Pablo (ditto) and maybe Buchholz, so there's money to be had if John Henry wants to let Dombrowski spend it.

If you trade Hanley you add 1B to that list. Trading Hanley just means you don't have confidence in him at 1B. That's definitely a possibility, but probably wouldn't bring much in terms of financial flexibility all things considered.

If Rasmus doesn't, I would be very interested in him.

If the manager just fills out the lineup card with "Travis" and swaps them inning by inning, how long would it take anyone to catch on?

We need a first baseman Sam Shaw in the system to complete the confusion.

We need a first baseman Sam Shaw in the system to complete the confusion. Well he's a third baseman, but there's lots of debate about how long he'd survive at first.

Why? There is no need to. We need a starter or two, one of which can be acquired through free agency, and need to rebuild the bullpen. No need to "blow up the farm system" when tweaks are all that are needed. Or is this wishful thinking on the part of the rival exec hoping some of our developing young talent ends up coming his way?

If you include prospects to possibly move HRam and/or Sandoval along with the moves to add pitchers, I would not be surprised if 8 of the top 20 prospects are moved which could describe a "blow up of the farm system."

8 of our top 20? Just to be rid of Hanley and Panda?
That would be 40% and that would probably mean 3-5 of them would be top 10 prospects.
Moncada Devers Espinoza Margot Benintendi Guerra Kopech Johnson Travis Marrero
3-5 of them are going to be traded so we can be rid of our two big mistakes from the past offseason? The return better be the likes of Giancarlo Stanton, Freddie Freeman, Matt Harvey, Chris Sale, etc and not the likes of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross or Stephen Strasburg. All that would be doing is compounding the original mistake. The last time we went to "big money" route and traded the farm for A-Gon and signed Crawford it didn't turn out well at all.
And looking at the teams still alive in the post season 3 out of 4 of them got there by holding onto their young talent and eschewing big money signings and/or trades.

This December, this board is going to be a nightly freak out session.

This essentially means nothing, as every other assumption made about DD and what he will do has been wrong so far. He may not be afraid to trade prospects, but I definitely doubt he will undervalue anyone.

Well I am not going to freak out until a freak out is warranted. Right now where I am at is a combination of concern and disbelief in what I am hearing. There is probably something to it but I am not going into freak out mode yet.
Those who do not learn from the past are condemned to repeat it...

Toronto would not have gone this far without Price (and Tulo). The Cubs would not have advanced without Lester. The Mets would not have Cespedes. Teams generally will need to make at least one big move to make the push.
Margot, Guerra, and Marrero could be moved from top 10.

I agree with you that the Cubs, Mets and Jays wouldn't have got as far as they did without making the moves they made. In the Cubs and Mets case at least they were each involved in one major acquisition that didn't not involve "blowing up their farm system". In fact for the Cubs the signing of Lester just cost them $. No draft pick or players were lost. In the Cespedes trade the Mets gave up 2 prospects. The 14th ranked prospect in their system and another who wasn't even in the organization's top 30. That is a far cry from dealing 8 out of our top 20 prospects...

I would state the over and under for the number of top 20 prospects to be at 4. I would take the over with 8'the maximum number that I could see without being surprised.

There are only 4 bats out there that I would to be willing to "blow up the farm to get". That would be Trout, Stanton, Harper and Goldschmidt. Trout isn't going anywhere, he is more than just a ballplayer he has become an icon. The others could be doable but would be very expensive in terms of what we have to give up. Probably the one most likely would be Stanton because of the big contract extension he just signed in Miami. I know we need a left handed bat more than a righty but Goldy would be the one I would be most happy in getting. He could put up eye popping numbers in the very hitter friendly AL East parks, plus he would be playing half of his games in Fenway, he would fill a big hole in our line-up and solve our 1B "problem". He won't come cheap though and we might have to blow up the farm system to get him...but if we are going to blow things up in terms of our organizational depth these are the types of players I would hope we would target.

Do I think DD will be busy? Yep. Do I believe DD is going to make some moves? Absolutely! And there could even be a "big trade". Do I believe that DD is going to "blow up the farm" doing this? Doubtful.
I was just playing "devil's advocate" for the sake of discussion on what I would hope to see in return if things did get "blown-up"...even if I think the chances of it are slim.

Teams generally will need to make at least one big move to make the push. And San Diego traded their entire farm system and wound up with a worse record than the Red Sox.
