there was talk of possibly Benintendi underslotting I doubt it. Benintendi is likely to be a straight slot signing. Red Sox MO is to take a 1-2 overslot kids in their next three picks. Then they will go VERY underslot in rounds 5-10 to save as much bonus money as possible. That will give them money to sign guys in Rounds 2-4 and some $$ to play with in Rounds 10+.

so do you think Matuella is a possible overslot at 83 if he slides?

Wow Houston that's crazy. I hope they don't sign all three.Cameron doesn't want to play college ball though according to rumors.

Dan O'Dowd is the best part of this MLB draft coverage. Very impressed with his input on each selection. Meanwhile I continue to wait for one of those long handled wooden hooks to reach in and drag Harold Reynolds off the set.
Houston has a ton of money. I'd imagine the largest ever since the new format started. They will get these guys signed.

Big draft for Houston. Besides their top 3, Eshelman seems to be a nice pick.

And sorry to all those who think Benintendi should start in Lowell, but healthy top 10 pick out of the SEC should be going to Greenville or Salem. That's a relative equivalent in competition.

Congrats on Benny Baseball!!! I am a Razorback fan and have followed him since he was a senior in high school.... I have a good friend that is the blue jays scout for the area. I questioned his size, and my buddy says he is obviously short, but he is very well put together and STRONG. He has some of the quickest hands that I have seen...
Oh and by the way Bobby Kielty is my brother in law!!!!

Benintendi had very similar pre-draft rankings to.............TREY BALL. I would hope so considering they both went #7 lol It is kind of funny though. Not only were they both picked 7th overall, but BA had them each ranked 9th on their Top 500, and PG had them both 12th on theirs. Very pleased with the Benintendi pick. Looking forward to catching him on ESPN this Saturday, and hopefully I'll make it up to Lowell a few times this summer to see him in person.

I don't think they have ever drafted any college player and sent them to Greenville for their pro debuts the summer they were drafted.

I hope they do, and sign him, but if Benintendi signs for near-slot (say the Sox get lucky and save 300K), and 5-10 are Srs. signing for 10-20K, they still have barely 700K to play with. Maybe Matuella signs for 1.2-1.4M, but I'm not sure that gets it done...and the HS guys are probably no chance with that kind of bonus (remember Boldt, Sheffield, Golson, etc...). I do think they'll make some savvy picks with high upside, but not sure they'll sign any more than maybe one. Exciting to see how it plays out though...Matuella would be a coup, and I like Nix and a couple other young arms in that group as well.

My favorite Harold Reynolds comment was that high school draft picks are great because teams can control them longer.

I don't think they have ever drafted any college player and sent them to Greenville for their pro debuts the summer they were drafted. FWIW, they've also never drafted a college hitter this high, and this advanced, from easily the best college conference for baseball. I think you might be right, in that he might go to Lowell for 5-10 games before they decide on Greenville or Salem, but I'd be really disappointed if he spent significant time in Lowell. That would be a slow, bad start to his career.

If Matuella is there - and I doubt he will be - I think you have to grab him. 70 FB with control plus the slider, TJ aside, I think you have to take the chance.

Bats I like remaining:
Garrett Zech OF from Naples HS in Fla (BA 110) and Nicholas Shumpert SS from Highlands Ranch HS in Col (BA 127) Elih Marrero C Coral Gables HS in Fla (BA 124)
Pitchers I like remaining:
Donny Everett RHP from Clarksville HS in Tenn (BA 21) * Assuming he has a large $$ after not being selected in the first 2 rounds Drew Finley RHP from Rancho Bernardo HS in San Diego (BA 60) Jackson Kowar RHP from Charlotte Christian HS in NC (BA 99) Jacob Taylor RHP from Pearl River Miss (BA 97) * Raw Talent

I'd be surprised to see them pick a signability guy in the 3rd round unless they have some idea if they will sign. Hooper tweeted that he's going to school (UCLA). Schools/Commitments: Everett - Vandy (Boras) Matuella - Duke Jr. (TJ), would rather go pro if the $ is right Chalmers - Georgia Miller - Clemson Nix - uncommitted Hooper - UCLA (Boras) Orimoloye - Oregon Hill - San Diego Jr. McCarthy - Virginia Jr. (injured most of year) Molnar - UCLA (Boras) Baker - TCU Ferrell - TCU Jr.

Not that it changes your point, but don't forget about an additional ~300k as part of the 5% overage that we're allowed.

Not to be a spoiler or anything with the list above.. Nix may be looking for at least the 1.5m he was supposed to have gotten last year from Houston and didn't get.
Edit:
I'd be all for the Sox drafitin him however, or Matuella to nab a high end power pitcher.
