Could the argument be made that the wall didn't cause the ball to come out, but the ground did? What if a player catches the ball at the dugout, hits the rail and while still holding the ball falls down the stairs of the dugout and then the bench causes the ball to come out? The rule isn't nearly clear enough. Eh, I think the causation piece of it is pretty clear (both your hypotheticals would be drops). There is some ambiguity with "immediately", which incandenza pointed out above, but I don't know that there's a way to write that rule without some ambiguity or judgment involved about the timing of how quickly a drop needs to follow a catch for it to be a drop. I call tuck rule on this - which worked out fine back in 2001. Not so much last night.

I don't really mind the playing of De Aza versus righties. As recently as a week ago, they still wanted to put their best roster on the field, and there's only a couple games left until the trade deadline (when he will most likely be moved for peanuts to open up playing time for Bradley). The fact that De Aza has played two or three games more than he ideally should just isn't that big of a deal to me.

It makes no sense and it is potentially counter to the development of Rusney and JBJ. It is like Stephen Drew all over again.

I doubt any playing time he may get before then will stunt anyone's development.

Sucks that of course since JBJ is coming up, he gets to face two lefties, one of which is Sale.

On a slightly different note, it's going to be borderline hysterical watching Sandoval flail away at eye-level fastballs and sliders in the dirt Thursday night

I've already come to terms with the fact that JBJ is going to become an All-Star somewhere else.

Didn't Beltre do this with the Sox? Or was it just a double? God I miss him. One of the bigger mistakes of the Epstein Administration was not to sign him. Then they would've had Beltre and Gonzo on the corners and never even thought about Crawford. And, perhaps even, (Gomesiness alert) that clubhouse might not have descended into chaos the year after they let Adrian go because Beltre wouldn't have stood for that or head rubs.

Huge Beltre fan here as well, but Swihart and JBJ makes it easier to forgive. Although they probably would have drafted Swihart anyway with the pick they gave up for Crawford.

I think it's quite possibly obvious that Webster's problem is mostly mental and competence based, while Joe Kelly's command and lack of pitches. They do have similar problems when it comes to command but I don't think you can compare them when it comes to competitors. Joe Kelly is a guy I feel that will pitch 15 endings and 200 pictures if they asked and then pinch it and enter on 15 times if that were possible while Webster will wilt a third inning and go to the shower That last sentence is the best desciption of Kelly or Webster I've ever read. using talk type at work... Joe Kelly is a guy I feel that will pitch 15 innings, and 200 pitches if they asked, and then pinch hit, and run 15 times if that were possible whereas...the rest it picked up cleanly. Sorry guidas, some of us have jobs and have to act like we're working when we're debsting joe Kelly and Allen (king of the sinking fastball) webster

Don't know about all of you, though I'll bet there's a rich variety of irritations, but the thing that has been really difficult is how often the team falls behind in the early innings. They're often playing from behind, it seems.

I feel like the Sox need to re-evaluate how these guys warm-up pregame. They may just completely suck, but I feel like they never get out of the first two without giving up runs.

Yeah they are always behind because the pitching sucks. But on the other hand I watched Lester pitch today for the Cubs and enjoyed that game. Watching his replacement pitch means I will be going to bed early again. But hey his younger so that makes it all good. What a joke this team is!

Porcello generates like 0 bad swings. Everyone attacks every strike he throws.

not watching, just checking the score. At this point, we've passed the point of under performance. Forget the management diatribes, the players have made a mess of this season.
