Is 600 really out of reach for the large father? Don't think so! This year?

Even when pitching better Porcello keeps giving up HRs at will.

Even though I accept the general proposition that "clutch" isn't real - one of the greatest clutch hitters of all time

500 home runs....mere mortals (like me) can't begin to fathom how hard that must be.....Congrats to Big Papi.

Did anyone predict Travis Shaw would have 10 HRs for the Sox this year?

Did anyone predict Travis Shaw would have 10 HRs for the Sox this year? How many will he have next year for the Red Sox?

Problem is, this game isn't over yet.
Can the bullpen get 7 outs before TB scores 7 runs? There's a legitimate question about that.
EDIT: I wasn't really expecting Porcello to stay in after the double and 113 pitches. Another indication of how much of a lost cause this pen is, that Porcello was kept in to finish the inning. Wow.

Porcello with another QS.
Not a great outing, but a good outing. An outing like what we expected out of him coming into the year.

I suspect it's more an indication that Red Sox brass wants to push their starters later into games.

What happened to Barnes? He used be able to throw 95+ with location. (Supposedly) Now he's at 93 and it's everywhere.

off topic, but yanks in the pro-cess of losing a doubleheader.
trail 10-4 in game 2. 7th inning. NYY losing a doubleheader is never off topic.

Red Sox would have a reasonable chance at making the playoffs if Uehara hadn't gone down. They still might ripnoff 8 in a row and get to .500 if the bullpen flukes together some games.
>it's september 2021 >mookie betts wheels David Ortiz out to the batters box for his final atbat >the pitch >the swing. It's deep, deep, rings off pesky pole >mookie wheels David around the bases >700 home runs

The thing about Papi is, a couple of months ago it seemed conceivable, but not much more, that he could get 500 this season. And he got there with 3 weeks to go, with two HR off LH tonight. He has an outside shot at 40 now.

Wow. Haven't missed a game in months, Saturday Wedding happens, and Papi blasts 499 & 500!!! Can't believe I missed it. Haven't read the thread yet and I'm sure many have mentioned, but I wish for him and the fans that it happened at Fenway, but big time congrats to Big Papi!!!

Congratulations to Big Papi. 500 home runs. Quite amazing, and he would have been approaching 600 homers had he stayed healthier and the Twins hadn't been so foolish with him - and he didn't even start playing regularly with the Sox until July of 2003. He hit most of his homers from age 27 on up.
Fortunately the Twins were foolish with him, and that worked out great as the Sox wound up the beneficiaries.
Now he should hit the most homers in a season since his 54 homer season in 2006. And the way he's going he has an outside shot at 40 homers this year.
And of course every year we hear it's the end for Papi and surely his time is drawing to an end, and of course one day that will be correct, and it could come all at once, but I see little evidence that he won't be productive next year, too. He has aged like fine wine, and early on a lot of talk was Papi should retire so Hanley can DH. I'm not so convinced that Hanley will be a better offensive player than Ortiz over the life of Hanley's deal, and his deal runs thru 2018, Ortiz's age 42 season.
I just think it's an easy thing to take for granted what David Ortiz has done for the Red Sox, but I'll never take it for granted. Before Ortiz joined the Sox, they were still trying to capture the holy grail, and now all these years later, Ortiz played a crucial role in finally toppling the Yankees, winning a World Series in 04, then playing great in 07 to help the Sox win another one, and then leading the way with his clutch GS in ALCS 2013, and his ridiculous otherworldly batting numbers in the 13 World Series when nobody else on either team could hit.
I will totally miss him when he does hang up his spikes. It'll be a long time before the Sox have somebody like him.

Ortiz bat speed remains solid. Can it last two more seasons?
Hard to tell, but I do know that his timing is locked, he is dangerous. When his timing is off, he is an easy out.

Congrats to Big Papi! Not gonna lie, though, I was hoping he wasn't going to make it this weekend since I'm going to Monday's game in Baltimore ... Here's a good piece by Speier on Papi's early career, detailing a huge managerial success by none other than Grady Little:

So now we have Andy Perez' family invading soxprospects and stuffing the ballot box for best 2b. Haha ... that's pretty funny! Hadn't noticed that ... No offense to young Andy, though, he had a nice season in GCL (as a 22 year-old college grad). It's just ... Moncada. What are ya gonna do?

Is there really no one better on the bench to DH than Craig? What's the point? I'd rather see Rutledge DH.
