Rich Hill may be, at this time, our best starter!! Although that is sort of sad, he has been dominating. I gather after 7 innings and 107 pitches he is done. 10 K's, 0 walks, and his ERA is below .200. Where have you been? More to the point, how can he do this after not pitching all that much recently, and with all the physical issues he's had?

Watching football, just box score watching the Sox. If Hill is pitching as well as the box score looks, wow. Give that man a contract.

OK, so the Sox manage to squeeze into the lead in the top of the 8th.
Now how the hell are they going to get 6 outs?

Bradley coming through at crunch time two days in a row.
Now can the bullpen get us six outs?

JBJ has a relatively normal day where he goes 1 for 3 with 1 K, 1 sac fly?
What is this sorcery? Wheres the Golden Sombrero or three HR's!?

Well, there we have it. Somehow the pen got 6 outs unscathed against the best hitting team in the majors, who is really trying to close out the division.
The laughing, and the whining, continues to die down ......

...and now a win. Ross did OK for pitching twice in two days. If Baltimore wins, the Sox are officially out of the cellar. It's been a while.

Rays came from behind in the ninth. Still half a game back.

Rays came from behind in the ninth. Still half a game back. Yah, but only 1.5 behind Baltimore. 3rd place is sounding like a nice goal at this point.

It really is fun watching him pitch. I hope that he does not wake up. Just outstanding. He seemed to keep the Jays guessing and he has some decent pop too. Today he resurrected a change-up. He can't be a two pitch pitcher. I'm anxious to see Owens' next trip to the hill....and was Johnson shut down completely???

JBJ's HR was a 448 footer with a 110.3 exit velocity. Giggity! I was going to ask that question. Has Ortiz hit one that far/hard all year?...or anyone else for that matter?

Ortiz has had a season high 116.8 exit velocity against Marco Estrada (445 ft) and his longest 456 vs. Chris Young (107.4 mph exit)

Among pitchers with 50 or more TBF, he's 3rd behind Carter Capps and Kenley Jansen in K% - BB%, and 6th in K% behind those two, Chapman, Miller, and Betances. It's hard to imagine a guy not good enough to make next year's roster throwing 14 innings that good just at random.

I've said it many times, but the problem with Hill has never been his pitching, just his ability to stay on the mound. He's been so injury-prone that it's been hard for a team with a roster crunch to keep him. Personally I'd give him a major league contract, but I guess I can see why a team wouldn't.
Actually, I take that back. In a baseball universe where Craig Breslow holds a roster spot all year, there's no roster that's in such a crunch that it couldn't keep a pitcher as good as Hill, even with the injury risk. SIGN HIM.

I would give Hill an MLB cotract but make it heavily incentive-laden. It would have to be structured so that he has the opportunity to make some cash whether he starts or gets sent to the pen. I wonder if a $2M base gets it done with a chance to make $10M if he gets, say, 25 starts or $5M with 40 or more relief appearances.

With this win, I think we took the season series from Toronto 10-9.
Sweet, if I am correct.
This team is so much more fun to watch than that lackluster team from May - July.

Different team than May-July? The core of the 2016 team and going forward? Actually, and I know I am repeating myself, this is a pretty big core for a team in last place and toying with a protected pick: Swihart, Vasquez, Hanigan, Shaw (starter or bench), Pedey, XB, Castllo, JBJ, Betts, Papi, Holt, ERod, Porcello, Buccholz, Hill, Koji, Taz, Ross, Layne, Wright. That's 20, and Dave will be hard pressed to improve on it, and I hope he knows he doesn't have to, and only needs to nail down the other 5 to contend. I know. Broken record, but the Aug - Sept team,a new team, in addition to putting up contender numbers, ended a mass depression and made most fans as happy as watching a beautiful sunrise on 2016.

So I've adopted the jackie leg kick in my adult baseball league. I am 1 for 11 with a ground rule double and 7 k's. It's good for timing and guessing fastball, and location. I think I'll go back to the pick it up put it down.

The other day he left the game because of dehydration after "sprinting" from first to home, and getting thrown out, on a double... Everybody involved in the signing of this guy (.658 OPS) should be fired twice!

For a while Pablo looked like he was losing a little girth (emphasis on little) but the erosion seems to have abated. And his zone judgment..UGH!
Man yesterday Buehrle threw two consecutive pitches way inside that almost hit Sandoval's hands. Result....two swinging strikes. The next two were way out of the zone up because there was no need to throw anything close to a strike. Amazingly Sandoval did not swing at those. I would not be surprised that his stat decline over the past few years is directly related to seeing many fewer pitches in the zone. I don't see any evidence nor have hope of this changing. Of the two, Hanley has more to offer despite the 'attitude'.

I have to say I kind of like Travis Shaw; sure, there are some warts - poor 1B, slow as Adrian Gonzalez - but it sure seems like he can hit, e.g. the opposite field hit to drive in 2 - you could just tell he went up there with that approach (after having been too pull-happy recently). And his HR's haven't been cheapies, plus two to LF and one to center. He's got a 132+ approaching 200 PA, pretty comparable to JBJ's 138+ in 204 PA; decent walk rate (8%), manageable if not ideal K% (21).
I just don't understand why he struggled at AAA - for anyone who saw him at AAA - did he just sellout for HR's? victim of bad BABIP luck? He sort of profiles as the kind of guy who would rake at AAA, but never really be given a shot at the majors - but of course he didn't rake at AAA.
Couldn't he give the Red Sox a 2013 Daniel Nava? If he's not in the Red Sox' plans (and Hanley makes it unlikely), if I were another team I'd pick him up.

Redsox.com shows no indication of either a 6th starter or a bullpen game.
On another note, the Monte Carlo analysis on fangraphs.com gives a 99.9% chance that neither TB nor BOS makes the playoffs. So these are good games to rest some folks. Including pitchers.
Response: No, Ya Gotta Believe !! Sweep !!!
