This is amazing. I can't remember anything quite like what Rich Hill is doing. This isn't some run of 5K/2BB shutouts by an aging pitcher but just dominating performances, completely out of nowhere. What do they do with him?

That really was one of the great catches I've ever seen. I can't believe the way (especially in light of the last such attempt) that he held onto the rail with his throwing hand to prevent falling into the pen. Just an absolutely unbelievable catch. Amazing. I'm so excited to watch this outfield next year ... as long as Hanley's not in it.

What's the matter with Lovullo?

I'm interested in watching Rich Hill pitch again. He looks like a decent depth option for next year. But he may be pitching himself into a better option with another team. When was the last time a Sox starter had 3 consecutive games with double-digit K's? I suspect it was Pedro in his prime sometime. I'll say one thing: Rich Hill is one young-looking 35 year old.

The large father has brought his OPS up to .903.
Good for 12th in the majors among qualified players.

Rich Hill's final pitch was his 116th, and went into the glove of Mookie, who has a 116 wRC+. (That's when you know I'm really bored on a Friday night at 11:30)

If they could find a way to keep Hill on ice until August maybe Buchholz could stay healthy until then before getting hurt and Hill can take his spot and continue the strong pitching in that spot. Sort of like a platoon ace. Platoon aces: the new market inefficiency.

Sort of like a platoon ace. Platoon aces: the new market inefficiency. It's certainly cheaper than what Price will make per year and you don't have to surrender Manny Margot. Of course, if the Sox want to sign David Price anyways I won't object.

Rich Hill Cy Young 2016
It's nuts that this guy just put up one of the best three start stretch in the mlb this year. I thought he could be a solid reliever, but I really didn't know he had the capacity to start, let alone do what he's been doing.
I Doubt we'll be a competitive environment to keep him next year. I see a non contending team with a 5th starter ST competition as his best bet. I always liked Hill and hope we could find a slot for him, but he will probably get a better opportunity elsewhere.

If he can get 1M+ guaranteed next year, great for him considering his journey. I'll always be a Hill fan. Pretty unbelievable mini run.

He has always been a very good pitcher. With considerable work he has become an excellent pitcher with minimal wear but max experience on that talented left arm (to match that cerebral head.). IMO, sign him up. Best case scenarioio he is in a valuable SP. Failing that he is a valiable RP. Failing that he is a low cost gamble.

I imagine he would have career-enhancing input to young LHP's ERod, Owens, Johnson, Light, Escobar, etc. In fact, this homeboy could be coaching for the Sox a few years from now. Sign him up.

Added on to the great outing by Hill and Mookie's catch. Xander is really giving himself a chance at a batting crown. He's within single digits now. 325 to 334 for Miggy. Go catch him young man.

Rich Hill, in three starts, has the fourth best fWAR among Red Sox starters (tied with Porcello).

IMO, sign him up. Best case scenarioio he is in a valuable SP. Failing that he is a valiable RP. Failing that he is a low cost gamble. The problem is not his role but how much can you count on him during the season? If his ligaments and tendons don't explode, he's good enough to be in the rotation for any team (including the Red Sox). But it just seems too unlikely that that could happen for a team to plan on. So what do you do? Sign him and assume Owens will get half of his starts next year? Or just overload with him since he'd be cheap and if everyone's healthy ERod is in AAA (seems really unlikely that that's a good idea)? Hey, maybe you can tell him, "Rich, we're gonna sign you for 2 years/$10 million to take Clay's second-half starts, so just chill out for a few months." (not actually serious with that last one) But this is really good pitching. Seems like they have to do something.

But Hill had no business pitching to the top of the order the 4th time through the lineup. He needed to be yanked after the leadoff hit in the 9th. What's the matter with Lovullo? This is, of course, only true for medium and high leverage situations. With a leverage index of 0.06 it's perfectly fine to let your starter go through the order a 4th time (but you should be prepared to yank him if it gets higher). And it's pretty ridiculous to argue that there was no drop-off in his results the 4th time through ... that bomb would have been a home run against over 90% of right fielders (in fact catching that kind of ball is one of the few things JBJ can't do).

"in fact catching that kind of ball is one of the few things JBJ can't do" -- Why do you say that?

-The O's, at best, are a 1.0% chance at wildcard. Perhaps Breslow will make amends for yesterday's offense by Hill and up the O's to 2%.
-Do we see Aro, Cook & Mendez? ... and Ross hasn't pitched since Monday.
-The bench has gotten short ... we need Weeks.
EDIT: update on Hinojosa. he continues to be unhittable. (.236 SLGa) But 6 walks in 13 innings this month. (subtracted the IBB)

White flag deserved a win today. I think the 5 inning rule will be history soon, with 6 innings being it for most starters.
Sox win a game they were giving away.
