Based on his quotes to the media after his final start, it seems pretty clear that there will be no hometown discount unless the numbers are so close that the difference is negligible. This is almost certainly going to be his last contract and he knows it. He's going to cash in and good for him for doing so. It's also very clear that the rotation situation will matter, and there would need to be a lot of parts that have already moved in Boston for him to consider signing with the Red Sox. I'd bet good money that he signs anywhere else - the situations just really don't fit. He's not going to sign to be Buchholz insurance when there are teams out there that'll allow him to compete for a spot coming out of camp, if not give him one outright.

If/When Buccholz goes down around mid June, & Rich Hill is 6-2 with another team, it may be difficult to just trade for him....If you were Rich Hill, would you take 4M guaranteed + 4M in incentives, or just a flat 6M. What would Boston offer him up front?

This may explain some (or most?) of Hill's success, and a reason to keep him around: link

I really hope he does well & earns some coin wherever he goes.....He never signed a substantial deal in his 7 or 8 years in the ML....I felt for him & his wife after losing a young son to medical complications last year......have heard nothing bad about the guy.

Ditto, wishing only the best for the kid from Milton. Arm woes took away his FA years. Hope this run at the ring rewards him handsomely

Rich Hill signs with Oakland. 1 year $6million
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Source: Rich Hill agrees to terms with Oakland. One-year deal for $6 million, pending physical.</p>— Jeff Passan (@jeffpassan) <a href="https://twitter.com/JeffPassan/status/666805327183126528">November 18, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
EDIT: OK Still haven't figured out how to get the tweets nicely in here. Jeff Passan tweet.
I thought he could have done better than a simple 1-year deal

It's impossible not to be happy for Rich Hill. It just goes to show that a little perseverance pays off.

Good job Rich. No way the Sox could guarantee a rotation spot.

It's impossible not to be happy for Rich Hill. It just goes to show that a little perseverance pays off. Wait, Hill left money on the table in order to grab a guaranteed rotation spot? How the hell were we supposed to know he'd do that? HOW? ?? It's almost like you should take what a player says in a frank interview with the media more seriously than what you'd like to imagine he's thinking as a fan. Anyway, snark aside, good for him.

Not sure about "guaranteed rotation spot".....looking on OTM, that gives them 7 starting pitchers, Maybe we're getting Gray for our entire farm system. Though it did say they are possibly looking to trade Jesse Chavez

Hill to Oakland @ 1 year 6 mil.....thought he would have done better than that. Opens up Gray to Boston (kidding, but only half kidding).

So that's about $3-4 million for a rental trade asset.

I suspect that Hill's contract also includes significant IP-based incentives. (ADD: no such incentives have been reported so far, but that's the kind of news that sometimes gets reported later on.)

Good for Rich Hill, an easy guy to root for.
Now we get to look forward to the July 31 trade of Rich Hill for Devers to replace an ailing Clay Buchholz.

Except for the "certainly going to be his last contract". His stuff really played last year and he's in a huge ballpark. There's a non-zero chance he finds a multi-year deal next year in a weak starter market.

...IF he stays healthy. Given his history, you'll get no money from me on that one.

He threw 148 total IP between Syracuse, Long Island, Paw, & Boston......I can see him going 165 or so, not a ton of miles on his arm & he seemed to look to be in pretty good shape. He'll be worth every penny of this years contract. Hope he has a good year to get a similar deal next year with that weak SP market.

Syracuse - 21.2 Long Island - 11.0 Pawtucket - 32.1 Boston - 29.0 Also, 61.1 of that came from August 15th on. Not sure how that factors into things as good or bad.

Does it matter how many innings he threw last year? It's not some kid you're trying to build up and/or protect for the future.

Not that it means a whole lot, but I got the info from their individual websites (syracusechiefs.com & pawsox.com)....Syracuse & Pawtucket showed 54 each (not total). I guess they could have been wrong. Fenwaythehardway said it all though as it's not like there will be an IP cap or anything.

Easy mistake I guess. Probably much easier to just use his milb.com, B-Ref, or Fangraphs player page. As for his arm, he's already had one Tommy John surgery and as I've said previously, "The point is that he has absolutely zero track record in the past eight years that he can handle a starter's workload." It's not about protecting him, but it's about being realistic in what kind of a jump in innings he can handle and remain healthy/effective. With the contract the A's gave him, it's a great gamble, but I'm not betting on him pitching 160 innings at the level he was at for Boston in 2015.
