Not a TON going on yet in the winter leagues, but the Dominican league opens play today, so we may as well have a thread. Biggest deal this winter is Yoan Moncada playing in Puerto Rico. Christian Vazquez will also play according to reports, although he'll be limited to DH duty. Venezuela has already started up, and the Sox players who've gotten in so far are all free agents and/or JAGs. William Cuevas and Luis Diaz are probably the most compelling to have played so far. I'm going to check the rosters later for other Sox. The VZ development program (aka Liga Paralela) has also started up. 30 Sox have played so far, including 25 on the Boston entry into the league. I'm expecting that team, which typically is only 75% affiliated players, to be more like 90% this year, given the number of guys they have. Of note, Ricardo Cubillan, who missed the season due to a PED suspension, has started all five games at short as they try to make up his innings. (I note that the "Dayan Diaz" playing for Lara in that league might not be the Sox one. For one, the Liga Paralela is WELL beneath a player who's reached AAA; it's a Rookie ball talent level, so unless he's just getting some quick rehab or warm-up innings, that'd be super-weird. Also, Dayan Diaz is from Colombia - I think he'd have to play in the Colombian League, although I'm not certain.)As always, updated stats at: soxprospects.com/fall-winter.htmEDIT: Diaz is on Lara's roster for the primary league. Probably just sent him down to the dev program for a tune-up.

Thanks for the link Junior! It looks like the team sent him to Winter ball with a main goal: Strike zone management!

Appears the following Sox will be in PR:
Travis Shaw - Santurce Pat Light - Caguas Christian Vazquez - Mayaguez Joseph Monge - Mayaguez
I'd expect Henry Ramos to show up as well. And Yomar Valentin was drafted but probably won't be active yet.

Over the weekend, Luis Alexander Basabe became by far the highest-ranked player to play in the Liga Paralela. Wouldn't surprise me if his brother showed up this week as well.
One of the more interesting offseason league slates in a while, with top 40 guys in Arizona (Travis, 9; Asuaje, 25; Martin 39; Shepherd, 40; and it's not like Lin, Wilkerson, Haley, & Rosenbaum are boring), DR (Devers, 2; Margot, 4; Hernandez, 17; unsure if Rijo will play), VZ (Ysla, 22; Escobar, 27; D. Diaz, 28), and PR (Light, 20; Ramos is top 50; plus the graduated Vazquez and Shaw).

Would winfer leagues be an opportunity for Dave to evaluate? showcase? Or is this just business as usual? Thanks.

I said that there are players who are ranked in the top 40 in those leagues, not that the top 40 players are all active.

Margot Homer from 3 days ago... http://instagram.com/p/9e5Rv2oFdB >fyi: Went 1 for 3 tonight and has now hit safely in four straight (five for 13 .384 during stretch, with a hr and a 3b) and has raised his average to .250 as a result >>Keep in mind that Margot is holding his own and beginning to flourish at the plate despite being one of the youngest hitters in the league. Although bbref has yet to put up 2015 figures, consider that last season in the DWL just 2 qualified batters (min of 50 abs) were younger than Margot is currently, the avg age of batters was 26.5 years or 5.4 higher than Margot...his homer came off phil coke a 33 yr old with 411 innings of mlb relief....

There are some Sox farmhands competing in the premier 12 tournament in Taiwan:
Aaron Wilkerson (USA) Aneury Tavarez (Dom. Rep) Mario Martinez (Ven)
Also, former players: JB Wendelken Chih-Hsien Chiang Mickey Pena
The Korean, Cuban and Japanese teams harbor some interesting talent: B. Park, D. Lee, L. Gourriel, Y. Gourriel, A. Despaigne, K. Maeda, S. Otani etc.
This was just based on a quick scan, so maybe I missed some.

Missed Zeke Spruill on the US roster as well.
Interesting that Miguel Pena is pitching for Mexico. Hopefully he can get his head on straight.

The head of mexicos baseball federation is in a pissing match with the summer and winter leagues. The leagues have refused to release any of their players for this tournament-and have threatened to do the same for the wbc-forcing mexico to try to withdraw before fielding a squad us born players of mexican decent

So I'd missed this, but apparently Mayaguez released Vazquez because he can't catch (note that Vazquez's San Juan team folded for the season and he was only on Mayaguez's roster when those players were disbursed among the other four teams, so there wasn't nearly as much loyalty there).
I'd known that situation had led to fewer at-bats. Didn't realize he'd straight up been cut.

He's since signed with Santurce and is playing for them, apparently.

Hanley gave an interview in DR and he said he'll begin to play for El Glorioso within two week. He'll be playing some 1st base and mainly DH.

So the Venezuelan development program wrapped on Monday. The Boston club made it to the playoffs and lost in the semis. Luis Alexander Basabe saw some time and as you'd hope, was dominant (.409/.500/.623). Lorenzo Cedrola, the org's Latin Program Player of the Year, was also very good (.349/.426/.482). On the pitching side, no real dominance. Hildemaro Requena was probably the best SP on the Boston entry (40.1 ip, 31/10 K/BB, 1.79 ERA, 1.07 WHIP). Ramses Rosario, the older pitcher the Sox traded IFA cap money for, pitched well for Bravos. As always, basic stats are at soxprospects.com/fall-winter.htm (and I need to update that to include Ali Solis, who's playing in the Mexican Pacific League... grumblegrumble)
