Would have liked to see Shaw here. Farrell has to stop the Young switch so early in the game.

There should be a rule that Shaw can't be pinch-hit for before the 8th.

Not sure if anything in baseball has ever been more predictable than Young punching out there

Farrell would get out managed by Showalter on a normal day - no sense helping him by making early pinch hitting moves.

At least it's a tied game and we've got Koji and Kimbrel. Let's score this inning!

Farrell alone could really limit the potential of this team. I really hope he doesn't get this cute this often.

John Farrell ladies and gentlemen. Pinch hits too early in the game for Shaw and it results in a guy with a OBP vs RHP that's at about replacement level comes back up in the 8th to face a right handed pitcher and the go ahead run at 2nd.

Hopefully Koji holds them and then we score.

I hope Koji never retires. What a valuable asset.

When Koji is on, he's as entertaining a pitcher as there is to watch in the league.

Hitting Sandoval there would have helped, but the more basic fact is that Young's platoon split is much bigger than Shaw's, so Shaw is the guy you want facing one pitcher of each handedness.

This also speaks of the roster construction. If Farrell must pinch-hit for Shaw and I really don't know why he needs to - there seems to be this major compulsion to get Young into the game, then it would be nice if the Sox actually had a competent lefty batter they can insert into the game to take Young's spot so we don't have to watch him be utterly useless against righties.
If that's not the spot for Sandoval, then he doesn't belong on the roster, or Castillo's spot makes little sense. They need somebody with a reasonable LH stick that they can bat against righties without killing the defense.

Given that Koji had thrown just 9 pitches, Noe Ramirez is really the only guy left in the pen, and the score is tied, bringing in Kimbrel to get the 8 and 9 hitters here may backfire. I hope not.

No Robbie Ross, JR?
Also, I don't get Kimbrel treating Joseph there like he's Davis. Back-up catcher, just challenge the guy.

Kimbrel is not impressing me with the way he locates his fastball...

Ross threw 24 pitches yesterday and is presumably available for just an inning. Yesterday was Wright's start so obviously they didn't need much from the pen there. You're thinking of the day before. Anyway, that point seems likely to be moot.
