John Henry is to blame for scouting and development misses? Wow!

AE isn't off to much of a start. Missing locations and isn't missing a lot of bats in the first 2. . . . He's not likely to make it through 5, maybe not even to 5. 59 pitches after 3 innings, more of the same, doesn't look in control of the game, constantly pitching behind in the counts. He just lucked out, last batter went after the first pitch.

John Henry is to blame for scouting and development misses? Wow! I was responding to the assertion that our top four prospects are untouchable.

You have a lot more confidence in John Henry than I do. Yes, Henry isn't as good a GM as Jason Day, Rob Schneider, George Costanza, HP Lovecraft or John Cena. But that isn't much of a knock considering none of these people work as the GM of the Boston Red Sox.

Matheny with a nice diving catch. No errors but he bobbled 2 balls earlier.
The third run was driven in by a batter behind 0-2. He waited on a curve (that was too high) and drove it to left. . . . At Salem (not on TV), Lakins was hit around, Moncada having a Moncada like day (except he hasn't struck out yet).

He made it through 5 but I though his pitch max was 75. 81 pitches 54 strikes. The last two innings were considerably better than the first three with regards to location but still not as good as I've seen him. He was all over the place, even on strikes. He even bounced a fastball that was so far in front it came in just below the knees.
I hate putting the disappointment tag on someone but Rei looks lost at the plate. The last strikeout was on a curve that he couldn't have reached with another foot of bat. Ockimey and Washington have also slowed it down a bit recently.

But that isn't much of a knock considering none of these people work as the GM of the Boston Red Sox. You don't think John Henry provides basic guidance and direction for this team? You don't think Dombrowski was hired Primarily to fulfill John Henry's desire to win now? The only way the Red Sox are going to significantly improve their pitching is to trade a couple of those top prospects, and if the starting pitching doesn't improve that's what's going to happen. And 29 other GM's know it and are going to demand a massive overpay.

OMG, Allen Craig hit a HR He went 2 for 2 then was replaced. I hope he's OK, he's only had 18 ABs all year.

The win now strategy is shell out to a 300m payroll. Paying 60m for Moncada is a win in a few years strategy. The young IFAs is an even longer term strategy.

They do a good job, IMO, of crafting a plan for the win now and the long term, Yes they had a few "bridge years", but they kept all of their assets and signed some big money guys as well. I don't get the hate of Henry. He's won 3 WS since he took over. He's eaten a lot of bad contracts because he isn't afraid of taking that risk. But he's also committed to establishing a solid base of prospects to build for the future.

Henry is easily one of the best owners in sports and pretty clearly the best owner in Sox history.

lol, Moncada just got his K. He also has a single, 2 BBs and 2 SB. . . . PawSox lost 7-5. McCarthy was pretty much hammered but Mitch Atkins made his AAA debut (I think) with 4.2 innins 0H 1BB 6K. . . . SalSox going into extras tied 6-6. Lakins was hit but Taylor and Grover with good outings to allow them to catch up. . . . Drive lost 6-0. All pitchers and hitters pretty much what you'd expect in a 6-0 game. . . . Moncada just put the Sox up 7-6 in the 10th with a SF. He also has 2RBI and 1R in the game. Anyone remember the old fashioned RP formula ? (R+RBI-HR)? He's acing that stat, literally being the perfect leadoff hitter.

I think he cares about the team, invests in the team, takes care of people in the organization and cares about the fans. However it does seem to me that since Theo left, the Red Sox have become increasingly impatient in their decision making. I think Epstein's patience -- which he shown in Chicago -- acted as a balance against Henry's more impatient nature.Unfortunately I don't think Dombrowski provides the same type of balance. I think at least one more large trade involving prospects is likely, although I hope I'm wrong. I didn't mean anything more critical than that.

Doing his best Rickey impression in single-A. Espinoza kind of salvaged his start. Looks like I was completely wrong about the Portland cup of coffee though. He'll probably spend the full season at Greenville, maybe an August promotion if he goes on a huge hot streak.

SalSox won 7-6 final.
Moncada's BB/K rate seems to be creeping up the last week or 2.
Procychen, our defense first catcher picked up where he left off before the short DL trip with 3 singles. SSS batting average is now .435.
So far, Dubon seems unchanged by not having Benintendi batting behind him. (He's also second in the system in steals, just a little bit behind Moncada with 11.)
I'm in agreement about the likelihood of a Portland cup of coffee (and also thought he'd get one). Not in the slightest worried about him though. No radars but the velocity and movement seemed to be still there. I'm guessing here but he looked like a pitcher struggling with his release point. His downfall today was falling behind so many batters and then being in obvious FB territory which, he was throwing higher than in the past.

He'll probably spend the full season at Greenville, maybe an August promotion if he goes on a huge hot streak. In the modern era of protecting pitchers, it always seemed unlikely that Espinoza was going to move up that rapidly under any circumstances. I presume his innings are going to be limited to about 100 this year, especially if, because of his less dominant nature right now, they end up being more stressful innings than his innings were last year. There's no reason, almost no matter how well he does going forward, to move him beyond Salem this year. As to his struggles, they seem to be command-related, at least to some extent. For someone his age that isn't a surprise; he's still in the process of maturing and his body is in some ways different than it was last year. I've witnessed first-hand the struggle that teenagers have adapting to their changing bodies, most recently my own grandson. It's most noticeable in sports activities that require precision, and pitching command is exactly that; the capability to throw the ball pretty much exactly where you want to.

Or maybe with having a lineup which contains 5 starting players who are are all recent prospect graduates? That's the definition of patience. One trade didn't overrule the last 5 years. I'm sure they realize that youth is by far the most important thing in baseball right now. It's not just a change in the Red Sox. It's a change in baseball overall.

I guess, like most things in life, the truth lies in between: The Castillo signing as a response to just missing on Abreu, the "need for a contact offensive approach" by signing fat Pablo and Hanley, the Lackey trade (need for MLB ready talent instead of prospects) seemed pretty reactionary to me.

I'd disagree about Hanley. He obviously was (and again is) a player whose offense is something you're not guaranteed to get from your farm. That it went wrong last year with his transition to lf, which has been discussed often and long enough, doesn't mean it was a change from the philosophy to try to develop as much homegrown talent as possible. Don't forget it was him who reportedly reached out to the Sox. And the early signs are it was a well worth deal after all; I expect him to add to his power potential, too. Would his offensive profile be better suited for LF? Sure. But I can see him getting to a point where he is a surplus at 1B, too. The lackey-trade had his reason, too. Sure, neither Craig not Kelly have legitimized it, but that doesn't mean there was no potential there. And who knows, maybe there still is, depending Kelly.

The Yawkees owned the organization for about sixty years prior to the Henry Group. Unless, of course, you want to go back to the guy who sold The Babe for No No Nanette.

For my 2 cents worth, I only have him behind Mark Cuban but I'm sure there are other good owners. The Cubs new owner, for example, seems to have his mind in the right place. LOL, it's too bad Tom Yawkee and Marge Shott (spelling) didn't do a major interview together. That would have been interesting.
