It's not a flashy pick, but seems like he has a solid floor and I'm sure we can sign him for underslot $. I wanted Nolan Jones but don't think we would be able to sign both.

How does a 6'4" 185 pound guy not project to possibly grow into a little bit more power? Some guys just don't have it. Ryan Sweeney was 6-4, 225 and and 584 major league hits, but just 23 homers in 2,118 at-bats.

Gotta love the idea of the trio of Neo, Groome, and Kopech heading the rotation in 3-5 years. If they all pan out, it would be nasty! Not to mention ERod!

There sure were no Groome prospects available when the Red Sox drafted Ball at 7 in 2013.

They did draft the eighth-eleventh or so highest ranked player with the seventh pick in what was a consensus top tier of 7 in that draft though. They also hd plenty of pool money. It was a bad pick but not franchise crippling like when the Pistons drafted Darko or anything.

I also like the Chatham pick. I saw him bandied a bit as a back-end first-rounder. He should stick at short, which always has value. And if they're lucky, the wiry strength will translate half as well as Nomar's did (he was a 20-40 grade hit tool for a lot of scouts). They've got some leverage with his collegiate status and high slot for low rank, so it's probably a good move. Plus, I like the chance he's ready in a couple of years.

Kershaw is Kershaw. He's probably top 25 all time. I'll settle for a lot less.

I hate even saying this, but his scouting report is almost identical to Kershaw's. Yeah, I avoided that for the same reason, but they're remarkably similar: working low 90s but can dial it up, terrific curve, good control, solid third pitch. Terrific pick, pretty much best-case scenario. Templeusox is happily eating crow.

“@zhelfand: Harold Reynolds, on MLB draft prospect Kyle Lewis. ”He’s 20 years old. That’s what stands out. Most people are 21 at that age.“” :-| Reynolds said "21 at that stage" not age…

I can't recall the Sox ever drafting a consensus top 3 talent. Maybe Clemens but not so sure about the viability of what was 'consensus' outside of the teams themselves, at the time.

2. Clayton Kershaw, lhp(National rank: 6) School: Highland Park HS. Class: Sr. Hometown: Dallas B-T: L-L. Ht.: 6-3. Wt.: 210. Birthdate: 3/19/88. Scouting Report: The draft’s best high school prospect, Kershaw projected as only a second- or third-round pick before blossoming as a senior. He had gotten exposure as a member of the USA Baseball national junior team and had a solid fastball for a lefthander at 88-92 mph. Now he has grown into his strong, athletic 6-foot-4, 210-pound frame, and his stuff has taken a leap. He has pitched at 90-96 mph all spring while continuing to pound the bottom of the strike zone. His curveball has improved even more than his fastball and now ranks a legitimate second plus pitch. He also has done a better job of repeating his delivery, giving him more control and command. Kershaw has dominated every time out, striking out 18 in Highland Park’s district opener and breaking the school’s career record for victories by earning No. 32 in his next outing. The only blip came when he strained an oblique muscle in his regular-season finale, knocking him out of the first round of the playoffs. The injury won’t affect his draft status-he could go as high as No. 6 overall to the Tigers-and he was expected to return to action in the second round of the playoffs. Clemens University of Texas. Age 20, 1983. Good strong pitcher's body. Has a good arm. Fastball had avg. vel. Most of the game was 87-90. In first 2 innings was 85-87 till the end. Curve has gd rotation. Slider was sharp early in game. Control was only fair. Didn't see a straight change. Fastball doesn't have much movement when in strike zone. Used slider sparingly, could be good pitch for him. Drafted: Red Sox, No. 19 overall. From: espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?id=1813664&columnist=schwarz_alan

Groome could be the second-best pitcher of the century and still not live up to Clayton Kershaw. That's a ridiculous and unfair comparison to anyone.

OK then, can't think of anybody we've drafted that was consensus top 3.
