Red Sox Acquire B. Ziegler from AZ for Alej. Basabe, Almonte

If you read this article, then scroll down to the Diamondbacks fans comments, they don't seem very happy. Ziegler was a decent player for them for quite a few years and quality guy as well. Hopefully he fills our needs.

BA's Prospect report: Luis Alexander Basabe, of, Red Sox. With his brother Luis Alejandro traded to the Diamondbacks, you’d think Basabe might sulk. Not on Wednesday. Boston’s No. 9 prospect went 4-for-4 low Class A Greenville, including the go-ahead homer against Greensboro (Marlins). Basabe is now hitting .395 this month and has a .760 OPS as a 19-year-old in his first year in full-season ball. I sure hope that the Red Sox hold on to the remaining Basabe and not include him as a "throw in" to acquire a back end of the rotation arm such as Hill, Hellickson, etc. who would be just rentals which are not going to move the needle enough to help the Red Sox win the world series this year. If they are going to trade him, I would hope they let him continue to build his value this summer and perhaps include him in a trade package to acquire a #1 or #2 starter this offseason.

High K rate, not a plus defender, less power, less baserunning acumen. Good time to sell.

Ziegler doesn't need to be a rental. 36 is old no doubt, but he's been a model of consistency, doesn't rely on his velo anyway. His age should depress the cost into the bucket where the Red Sox ought to be fishing out of with their financial muscle into to begin with - short years, a bit more per, playing style is somehow specifically tailored to Fenway. Low risk high reward. Let everyone else throw money at the "power armz".

It's a bit of a risk and $9 million isn't chump change, but he's been so consistently good, but he probably can get a closing gig elsewhere and perhaps even a 3 year deal in free agency. But if 2 years and $18 million would bring him back for the next couple of years, I wouldn't be opposed to it. He's a really good pitcher.

If it's Dombrowski's relationship with LaRussa that's a difference maker, then hope DDo is quickly on the phone if and when the DBacks want to unload Paul Goldschmidt.

Ziegler's been one of my favourite non-fireballing pitchers for a number of years now (along with Koji and O'Day). I was high fiving my kids, who know little about baseball, when we got him for such a small price. For awhile there,I thought only Brian Cashman knows how to underpay in a trade.

It had to be Dave Dombrowski's relationship with Tony LaRussa, dating back to the White Sox in the eighties." Followup discussion by Stewart: Heyman: Stewart defends D-backs from unnamed accusations “I don’t mess around,” Stewart says. “If it makes sense, I’m going to do the deal.” Others didn’t think it made sense. But D-backs people, who first tried for the coveted young right-hander Anderson Espinoza (the Red Sox said no, holding him out to make the Drew Pomeranz deal), see Jose Almonte as a strike thrower with an above-average breaking ball, command and presence, and second baseman Luis Alejandro Basabe as a middle infielder with some pop who’s having a nice season (the Red Sox saw Almonte as a nice arm but ultimately didn’t love Basabe as much as Arizona did). Stewart acknowledged he wasn’t sure what teams were making those claims against the D-backs. But he said some teams only have one or two prospects they liked, and he was loath to ask for those very-top players. He also said he’s surprised by the dealings of some teams, noting that some of their styles don’t match up with his. www.todaysknuckleball.com/nl/arizona-diamondbacks/heyman-stewart-defends-d-backs-unnamed-accusations/

For all the ragging I do on the Diamondbacks, if their scouts saw something in Almonte and they like him specifically then it's really not a bad trade for them. We often discuss those lower-tier players, especially pitchers, as lottery tickets. But that sort of presents them as scratch-offs where they are all interchangeably valuable, when in reality teams do a ton of evaluation.
Side thought: I do find it funny that the ask fell all the way from Espinoza to Basabe/Almonte.
That's sort of what we were going through in the frustrating Braves proposal thread, or the Cole Hamels stuff last year. Of course the Phillies asked for Betts! Of course the Braves are asking Moncada! Negotiations often start at a place from where a deal gets done, and often there is discussion that goes nowhere. Think about that the next time you're getting upset over rumors about a trade that was offered or an over-zealous offer that was turned down. What made Amaro foolish wasn't asking for Betts in the first place - it was not being able to put a deal together for a rich prospect package after that for a player the Red Sox were interested in. Though the package the Phillies got from the Rangers was strong, so maybe he played it right after all. Except he got fired, so that's not so good.

Liking this trade more and more.
I know there were some reservations because Ziegler isn't a big strikeout guy and pitches to contact. This is true. But from what I've seen the contact he pitches to is usually very weak...

Just get a bunch of arms then make a move like this.

You can stop with the name calling. Dombrowski was playing to the crowd, including many, many, of the posters on this board. Maybe this will make the Boston media put a clamp on it, but somehow I doubt it. The AZ trade was a very good one, but you deal to what you have. Stewart was willing to take a lesser amount because guys like Kimbrel genrate oohs and aahs, while the Zieglers of the world labor with quiet effectiveness.
