Sorry, who is this guy? Never heard of him. Quick search on Google shows he is a right handed hitting catcher. Likely won't make any sort of impact on the team but I guess you can never have too much depth at the catcher position. On a side note I share the same birthday as him so that is pretty neat.

This guy is worse I would assume. I know Hanigan has an 11 wRC+ but it's an 105 PA sample.

This guy is worse I would assume. From a quick glance at Fangraphs, doesn't look like it. In fact, it's a little surprising that he fell to us. I wonder if he can catch a knuckleball.

Baseball reference numbers show same thing. Better bat and defensive numbers this year. My biggest issue with Hanigan is his on base skills are gone this year and his defensive numbers are down. He needs to go. I would say it's very surprising he fell to us with so many teams needing catching.

bWAR + Framing Wins, per 120 games (Wgt is 3-2-1 weighted)
Catcher '14 '15 '16 Tot Wgt Leon -0.3 -3.1 8.7 1.7 3.0 Vazquez 6.2 0.2 3.3 2.7 Hanigan 3.4 1.7 -3.1 1.6 0.6 Holaday -4.5 -1.3 0.7 -2.3 -1.2 If Hanigan's decline and Holaday's improvement are for real, it's an upgrade. Vazquez should be the backup starting 9/1, however.

Tim Britton @timbritton 7m7 minutes ago Holaday hitting .238/.290/.405 this season. Dombrowski drafted him and had him in Detroit.

Have to think Hanigan gets released or is hurt. Holaday is out of options.

I would think that Vasquez could provide better defense and offense than this guy,

I would think that Vasquez could provide better defense and offense than this guy, You can debate the defense part, but Holaday is a better hitter by fairly wide margin.

Except if you look at his AAA numbers in each of the past few years, which are his biggest sample. He's barely any better (if he is at all) and his framing is considerably worse. I don't think it's about being better than Vazquez in the present, I think they want to see Vazquez start to hit a bit more in AAA and gain some confidence and momentum heading back up a level next time around.

Agreed. I think this is actually a real solid move. Vasquez needs to improve and hasn't hit the cover off the ball in AAA. Significant upgrade over Hanigan who has 1 hit since the All Star Break

I would think that Vasquez could provide better defense and offense than this guy, You can debate the defense part, but Holaday is a better hitter by fairly wide margin. Steamer projections, rest-of-season: Vazquez: 74 wRC+ Holaday: 63 wRC+ Of course, ZiPS feels the opposite (68 wRC+ for Holaday, 59 wRC+ for Vazquez). But I certainly think it's far from obvious that Holaday is a better hitter, let alone a significantly better hitter. Holaday has been a better major league hitter than Vazquez so far (72 vs. 61), but they both have less than 400 career PAs, so that doesn't mean all that much. In the minors, Vazquez was a much better hitter in a much larger sample: Holaday: 86 wRC+ in 1378 career minor league PAs Vazquez: 106 wRC+ in 2195 career minor league PAs

Vazquez has proven he can catch Wright's knuckleball. Can Holaday?

I hope we hold onto Vazquez long enough.

Vazquez has been awful vs 4 seamers and sliders this year, and they've accounted for 72.7% of the pitches he's seen. He has a lot of work to do. It's weird because before TJS, he was a fastball hitter.

The way I view it, it's an upgrade over Hanigan who has become an automatic out for the opposing team. Clearly the Red Sox view this as an upgrade or they wouldn't have made the move. Vasquez is working on some stuff in AAA and Leon is the every day catcher so Vasquez would play twice a week in the majors. In my opinion Holaday probably would be a better option for the rest of the year, maybe not by much but I do think it's an upgrade all around.

I think they simply determined that Hanigan is toast and that they would still like to have 3 catchers for when the rosters expand so simply hold onto Holaday thru the rest of the season and bring up Vazquez in September - the extra time in Pawtucket won't hurt him any. If the Sox make the playoffs I would expect Vazquez to be the backup catcher to Leon.
Either way with Swihart not an option this season and Hanigan washed up, they wanted to have 3 viable catchers in the organization.

The Olympics' opening ceremony starts in 30 minutes, about 20 miles from where I live and I'm much more interested in the counter move to this waiver claim. Maybe I should get my priorities straight.
