He's going to have to learn sometime. Any successful playoff team is going to call on their closer multiple times in non-ideal scenarios. You might WANT him to "learn" sometime, but that does not mean he will ever be good at it. Just because Kimbril is labeled a closer and some closers can pitch multiple innings, does not mean Kimbril can. No, if he is your best reliever, you have to use him in some situations that he might find uncomfortable. No reliever likes to come into the game with the bases loaded or with runner in scoring position. He's not unique in that way. He somehow managed fine in his rookie year to muster enough courage and have a 0.44 ERA in almost entirely non-save situations.

I would have had Ross up in the bullpen to start the 9th, just for the record.

Great win. Great job by Kimbrel. Would have only been sweeter if Upton was tagged out jogging around 1st base.

I'm looking forward to the first time I see someone in one of these game threads summarize the day's events by saying "well, that was a really bad win." EVERY win is a nice win. I need to think about this ...

Guess it's better to be lucky than good. Kimbrel was giving up shots. Three of the 4 outs he got were absolutely scalded and I thought the ball by Upton was gone.
Pomeranz did a great job, though. Glad they emerged with the victory.

That's gone in every other ballpark. It may well have been gone in this one. It looked like Bradley batted it back onto the field by extending his glove above the wall.

Toronto and Baltimore will be facing the 2014 and 2015 AL Cy Young winners tomorrow. While we get to face the 2011 winner.

im curious what the counter move will be... They could send Marrero down and then send Owens back after the game with Chris Young back on Monday. That has to be it. If Eduardo is not ready for his subsequent start, you can DL him retroactively and recall Owens. We acquired SP depth just in time to need it. Had Buchholz and Owens turned it around quite a bit earlier, maybe Espinoza is still in the organization, but we'd also be seeing Brian Johnson, Sean O'Sullivan, or Justin Haley tomorrow. Re tonight's game, and specifically the three balls hammered off of Kimbrel, I believe we were overdue for some luck.

Who is this guy managing and what has he done with John Farrell? I thought it was typical Farrell. More awful poor bullpen management.

Tazawa is due for a DL stint very soon and probably will be retroactive from the last game he appeared in on the loss on Thursday. That way he's back right around September 1rst. That's what I'd do if I was the Sox, but your scenario is likely to happen first.

Who is this guy managing and what has he done with John Farrell? I thought it was typical Farrell. More awful poor bullpen management. Well Robbie Ross jr didn't see any action in yet another close game. Robbie Ross jr should be the designated "8th inning man" like Farrell wants to do. I mean, ideally you want to play matchups and manage properly, but we can't expect that from Farrell. He has a 2nd grade baseball mind and he always needs guys to have specific roles because that's all he knows how to do. I really just think the guy incapable of any kind of problem solving skills. Forget about adjustments before they happen either, he rather make a mistake and cost the team and then adjust when really everyone else tells him to do so. I mean really, I wish my job was as easy as John Farrell. I really don't know what he even does.

Happy Sunday Sox win day! Hank has a chance to set down a marker for Sept and next year. I am sure he wants it bad. Hope that JF gives the kid his best chance, by putting out our best lineup. Get out of Detroit with another win.

Glad they emerged with the victory. He struck out two batters. So it's two of the four outs. You're right. I should have said that he gave up 3 shots that were absolutely scalded resulting in 2 outs and a double that just barely missed being a deflating game tying home run.

I've always been a Henry fan but considering the contract status of Wright, ERod, Price, Pomeranian and Porcello, it would be nice to see him establish some off-season trade value.
