They could send Marrero down and then send Owens back after the game with Chris Young back on Monday. Tazawa is due for a DL stint very soon and probably will be retroactive from the last game he appeared in on the loss on Thursday. That way he's back right around September 1rst. That's what I'd do if I was the Sox, but your scenario is likely to happen first. If Taz is on the DL on Sep 1, he's eligible for the post season roster. Keeping him there for an extra day or two expands the clubs options come playoffs.

Happy Sunday Sox win day! Hank has a chance to set down a marker for Sept and next year. I am sure he wants it bad. Hope that JF gives the kid his best chance, by putting out our best lineup. Get out of Detroit with another win.
Its the A team going today.

I've always been a Henry fan but considering the contract status of Wright, ERod, Price, Pomeranian and Porcello, it would be nice to see him establish some off-season trade value. There should be 7 viable starters going in to the year, one in long relief and one or two in AAA. Unless we get a great offer, we should keep Owens, and buch too.

I'm perfectly content with keeping him in the organization for another season, as the guy who's in the rotation whenever someone is on the DL and is otherwise in AAA honing his craft. You really need two guys like that in AAA; Johnson would be the other if Haley's future is in relief. They should have a catcher with significant trade value by the end of next year as well. Meanwhile, it looks like the plan is to have Wright, if he doesn't go Tuesday (which seems likely), start Friday in E-Rod's next turn, with E-Rod pitching the next day or the day after. If that's not happening, he can be disabled retroactively. Mon 8/22 Price Tue 8/23 Buchholz Wed 8/24 Porcello Thu 8/25 Pomeranz Fri 8/26 Wright Sat 8/27 Rodriguez or Price Sun 8/28 Price, Rodriguez, or Buchholz Mon 8/29 Porcello Tue 8/30 Pomeranz Wed 8/31 Wright Thu 9/1 off If they keep that rotation, the pitchers in Toronto on 9/9 to 9/11 would likely be Price, Porcello, and Pomeranz or Wright.

I thought Johnson was getting better in AAA. Nice start with a walk. I guess a split in Detroit

A soft tosser that can't locate. I wish we traded Owens when he had value.

Strike out after the walk. He has settled down and will now throw a shutout. Or somewhere in between a shutout and an automatic loss.

Does Rueben give him that go, or is Sandy responsible to make that decision. Not very smart.

Good things happen when you're 6'7, lefthanded and throw the ball over the plate

I thought it was typical Farrell. More awful poor bullpen management. Well Robbie Ross jr didn't see any action in yet another close game. Robbie Ross jr should be the designated "8th inning man" like Farrell wants to do. I mean, ideally you want to play matchups and manage properly, but we can't expect that from Farrell. He has a 2nd grade baseball mind and he always needs guys to have specific roles because that's all he knows how to do. I really just think the guy incapable of any kind of problem solving skills. Forget about adjustments before they happen either, he rather make a mistake and cost the team and then adjust when really everyone else tells him to do so. I mean really, I wish my job was as easy as John Farrell. I really don't know what he even does. I thought last night after Hembree got out of the 6th, he should have never come in for the 7th. I believe in roles but Farrell should have his rotation set for 7th, 8th and 9th. And it was set up. Instead he keeps Hembree in. I couldn't believe it.
I'd go with 7th inning Barnes, 8th Zeigler, 9th closer with Ross as the rover for 7th and 8th if Barnes/Zeigler looks like they are faltering or if Zeigler needs to come in the 7th if Barnes falters etc. But as you say-- he doesn't adjust. There should be realization that roles can change quickly. He's just thick as a brick and uses the roles even when they have clearly collapsed.
And now he seems to have Barnes as his 8th inning guy. I would have Zeigler. I'm with you. It seems he just waits for the collapse until it almost becomes embarrassing (For example Taz) that he needs to adjust. Ross should have been used much more this year.

Is it OK to walk one batter per inning if you strike out two batters per inning

I don't disagree with that. On the other hand, if there's trade value that exceeds the taxi value, you go for it. As it stands, DD has done a great job of putting himself in a very strong position this coming winter. The 2017 roster can easily be filled from players in the organization now and there would still be excess value which makes for great ways to tinker with upgrades. Besides the starting five, we also have Owens, Johnson, Elias, Buchholz (if they exercise the decently priced option), Kelly and Haley. Either CVaz or Swihart is likely to be gone, having both Hernandez and Dubon is a luxury when you have Holt. Assuming Bradley doesn't get traded, Moncada will be at third. That means for first/DH, we have Hanley, Shaw, Travis, Craig & Panda which assumes we don't re-sign Hill. That's a very strong hand to be playing with. We're essentially ending the season looking close to set for next year. How often does that happen ?

Has any pitcher ever been called to the majors, thrown a no-no then sent down immediately after ? That'd be an interesting situation all by itself.

Verlander seems to be operating with a different K zone than Hank so far. Especially the high strike over the middle of the plate. Thats been called very inconsistently so far.

Abraham just tweeted "The projected line for Henry Owens: 9 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 9 BB, 21 K, 153 pitches, 90 strikes."

Great idea to load the bases as Owens has no trouble throwing strikes.
