Best record in the AL always felt a little far-fetched to me, but I am still hoping for home field against the Indians.

If the standings were different going into this series, there would be 5 pages of comments. Crazy how different it is. Way to go Papi!!

Hopefully this game presents Kimbrell with a save opportunity. It would be nice to see him put the other night behind him.

Gotta have that pitch. Couldn't have placed it better.

I'm not advocating punting this series by any means, and I have maintained all year that TOR is the 2nd best team in the division. But I'm hesitant to help give the O's homefield in the wildcard game. They've been getting hot lately and their shutdown bullpen and homer-happy lineup could be dangerous in the playoffs.

Way to go BIG PAPI.
And, way to work out of that Koji(after getting squeezed)
I'd like to see the Sox get home field against the Indians, but if they don't, i still think they can beat them.

Benny's back over .300 - I forgot the exact stat, but hasn't been a Red Sox first year player with over 100 ABs that hit over 300 in a long time. anyone recall the details when that was mentioned?

My Kimbrell confidence meter is trending way downward. It's hard to trust a guy with control that sort of comes and goes.

His control does not exactly come and go. He basically depends on people swinging at balls. If every batter went up to the plate and did not swing at anything he would walk 50% of the batters he faces.

Not helping Kimbrel that this ump has not give him ONE 50/50 call.

Got to be all in his head - great stuff, but that odd propensity to yank it and overthrow. This is an important save for him....
AND....whew! Back in the winning ways!

Not his sharpest outing, but hey, its progress compared to last time out, I'll take it.

Magic# for 2 seed is now down to 2, if I'm not mistaken.

Reset for Saturday (assuming the SEA-OAK score holds true):
BOS has clinched the AL East. TEX has clinched top seed. BOS has the tiebreaker over CLE for the #2 seed. BOS's magic number to clinch the #2 seed is 2.
BAL(@ MFY) is one game in front of TOR(@ BOS) for the first wild card spot, with DET(@ ATL) 0.5 games back and SEA(vs. OAK) 1 game back of TOR. (BTW, TOR has tiebreakers over BAL/DET, SEA has tiebreakers over TOR/BAL, BAL has tiebreaker over DET, DET has tiebreaker over SEA)
SAT: CLE@KC (Bauer), TOR@BOS (Rodriguez) SUN: CLE@KC (Tomlin), TOR@BOS (Price) MON: CLE@DET (TBD, only if affects playoff spot or seeding)
WC game is Tuesday (currently TOR@BAL), and ALDS begins Thursday, with Porcello and Price pitching games 1 and 2 vs. CLE, most likely.

Probably just need to win one of these next two games to clinch the 2 seed. I think Cleveland will lose one of their final 2-3.

In a perfect world, Detroit and Cleveland will have to play their cancelled game this coming Monday. Detroit is now 1/2 game behind Toronto for the 2nd wildcard.

His control does not exactly come and go. He basically depends on people swinging at balls. If every batter went up to the plate and did not swing at anything he would walk 50% of the batters he faces. This was not true in Atlanta. He's gone from throwing 49.6% pitches in the zone in 2012-2014 to 44.9%. The former rate would rank 113th among 379 MLB pitchers (40+ IP), while the latter would rank 307th. He's gone from throwing more pitches in the zone than about 70% of pitchers to throwing more than just 20%. That's massive. It's like the best in baseball becoming average -- which is more or less what's happened to him as a closer.

Not his sharpest outing, but hey, its progress compared to last time out, I'll take it. Not disagreeing because he really wasn't perfect, but the ump also screwed him on both walks, both fourth balls were damn inside the zone. That and the rain and coming out on top after that awful game he just had shows that Kimbrel is very resilient.

It's amazing how there's always an excuse for Kimbrel.

I mean, I can't stand Kimbrell but there's not much he can do when he throws strikes that are called balls.

I agree about the O's lineup and bullpen. If the Sox end up facing one of them, I'd rather face the O's than Toronto. It probably doesn't make a difference but I'd rather have them play in Camden Yards than Toronto. Mookie seems to hit well at Camden and the crowd may have more of a home feel than in Toronto.

I mean, I can't stand Kimbrell but there's not much he can do when he throws strikes that are called balls. They were both on 3-1 counts anyways. I'm willing to bet even if called strikes, he would eventually have walked both. And you very well know that I'm not only talking about last night.
