2017 Red Sox Major League Spring Training Thread

To me it's the best all around outfield in baseball. Off the top of my head only the Pirates come close and even disregarding player contracts and control which favor the Sox considerably, I'd take Mookie over Cutch, JBJ over Marte and Benintendi over Polonco (although that one is close). For me, the only question, which I consider a relatively minor question, is how much consistency JBJ's offense evolves into. ADD: As far as being better than Rice, Lynn, Evans I'd say probably if you view it as a picture in time. I'd want to see them play together for about 3 years before I'd say that though, there's something to be said for longevity. Yeah it's definitely a good argument over who has the best OF. The Pirates are clearly great in the OF, despite concerns about Cutch, and I'd also say the Marlins, Dodgers, and maybe the Cubs could be put in that discussion. [/quote

I heard that listening on the radio. Would be interesting if he can hit it consistently but not sure I believe it since stadium radar guns can be wrong pretty often I honestly don't care if he can dial it up to 100 until he can spot his fastball. Well, there are a couple things at play. If he's working 91-93 instead of 88-90, he's going to get away with a few more mistakes and/or get a few more whiffs, given his change. If he's working up in velocity, too, he may have more confidence in the FB as well. A lot of his misses are border-nibbling, and getting a few more strikes because he's less afraid to work in the zone is likely to have a positive snowball effect on his ability to get ahead in counts, be able to use the FB more, use the CH as a weapon, and limit his walks/big innings. That means better efficiency and less predictability. His issues right now remind me of early-career Moyer, who was a supreme nibbled despite an excellent change. I think Owens's struggle isn't so much that he can't locate his FB, but that he can't yet locate it *precisely*. A little extra velocity might make it easier for him to get the reps to do that. I don't think the velo alone is an issue, and I don't think a couple mph alone makes him a better pitcher, but it might lead to some other positive effects that he hasn't been able to sort out working where he does. I've previously argued extensively that velocity isn't a make-or-break for him, but maybe it IS what gets him over the hump confidence and approach-wise. Nice storyline to follow at least.

Even if he is, it isn't enough of an upgrade to risk the rest of the baggage that comes with Lawrie. When I read about Lawrie getting released the first thing I though was that he'd be a worthy upgrade over Rutledge. Not saying what you posted is incorrect - I just want to know what baggage are you referring to? I'd be interested to know. Is he a bad teammate? A head case?

Suitcases, he has a lot of suitcases and the Sox locker room although not the total embarrassment that is the visitor locker room, is small.

He is also rumoured to be the batter who swung the bat that hit Tonya Carpenter in the head. Has connections to at least 2 female Olympians.

The Red Sox outscored the opposition 28-3 in last 2 games. Benintendi was 4-4 yesterday with a HR and 2 2Bs. ERod and Porcello with two clean outings including no walks. Deven Marrero continues to OPS over 1.000. Now back to not caring about Spring Training stats. Also, anyone who is on T-Mobile and wants mlb.tv, they are giving away free subscriptions if you can wait until April 4th.

Was at Jet Blue Park this morning. Saw Panda in person taking infield at third. He is definitely not as heavy, but he is never going to be thin. Ramirez was taking infield at the same time. Saw Quinton at one of the minor league fields taking BP with a some of the minor leaguers. I assume he was there just to get a lot of AB's. Aybar was also in his group. Did not see my favorite, Jayce Ray (aka Dan Nava II,) today. Hopefully, he is in camp and was doing something else when I was watching. There was an inter-squad scrimmage on one of the fields. People like Rei, Ockimey, Dalbec, Washignton, Monge, Chavis were among those who were playing. I saw Dalbec hit one off the wall in right-centerfield. Rei led off one inning and was joking with the guy hitting behind him about what a great leadoff hitter he (Rei) is - how fast he is, etc.) Given that he is a catcher, I doubt he is ever going to be a leadoff hitter or be fast. I thought it was great that even though this is there job they still are having fun out there. I have to work tomorrow and Friday, but hope to be back out at the complex on Saturday and Sunday. Does anyone know when the minor league games start? Also, for those of you who have been there you know that they have statues and plaques for past Red Sox greats just outside the park with their numbers, etc. Was somewhat surprised that they do not have a new one up for Ortiz. Does anyone know if they are planning to honor him in that way? He sure deserves it. I am officially annoyed that you saw Quentin. Was trying to get a shot of him but never found him (and headed home from trip 1 last night). There's one wave of players yet to report. Not sure if he's part of that wave but I didn't see Ray either, fwiw. I may only have caught the end of the second-to-last wave as I only saw Dalbec briefly yesterday. Minor league games start March 15. The Rochester Red Wings are reliably the first of our group to post their minor league game schedule: www.milb.com/news/print.jsp?ymd=20170203&content_id=215123432&vkey=news_t534&fext=.jsp&sid=t534In case anyone reading is unaware, the Red Sox, Twins, Rays and Orioles play in round robin format, with each day's opponent pair dividing AAA/AA at one park and high-A and A at the other (with occasional low-A games, college opponents, etc.). So if the Red Wings are playing Baltimore, the Sox are playing the Rays, and vice versa--and if the Red Wings are playing Boston you also know which of those teams play where. I assume that once Ortiz has his number retired during this season they will add a giant 34 to the garden for 2018. Thanks for the information. I went back to the facility this morning and some Red Sox staff members were handing out the Red Sox Minor League training schedule. You were right. The games start on March 15th and are played through Saturday April 1st. All start a 1:00 except the April 1 games, which start at 10 AM. There are no games on March 19th and 26th which are designated as "Camp Days", whatever that means.
Was hoping to check in on the minor league players again today, but was told by a staff member that they were all having their medical exams today and would not be practicing. So I went to field one to watch the major league players for awhile. Someone yelled at Hanley asking if his shoulder was feeling OK. Hanley gave the guy a thumbs up, not that it means anything. Watched Pedroia, Moreland, a player I believe was Betts (he had a jacket on and no name or number visible but it looked like him) and Hanley take a round or two of BP.
On the side field nearby- the one marked with the lines that sort of make it look like a football field, I watched Sale loosen up with Elias and Kimbrel throwing with Rodriguez. It is probably nothing, but I couldn't help but notice that Sale and Elias were throwing from a distance that was much farther apart than Kimbrel and Rodriguez. Probably nothing. All 4 then adjourned to some nearby pithing mounds and threw what I would call a bullpen session.
I noticed this is a thread for Major League Spring Training. Should there be a separate thread to talk about minor league spring training given that the site is about Sox Prospects (not that we have many left now that DD has traded most of them away)?

Do you need a ticket for that days game to watch them practice or can anyone show up? Just show up...no cost. You can walk from one game to the other.

I'm guessing here that the Sox are loaded with baggage, how do they ever play together ? Oh! the immorality.

O'Brien certainly likes saying that every player has good power.

That and the fact that Rutledge is hurt again to start the spring after being hurt throughout the whole second half of the season last year. I'm not sure Rutledge can even stay durable enough to survive on a major league bench at this point.

So far I've seen 2 balls go by Sandoval that could of prevented 2 hits. They were 2 hard hit balls so they weren't errors but they were makeable plays imo. He has also struck out on a pitch right down the middle.

So then anybody on the Red Sox who has ever had a bat slip and land in the stands or dated females has "baggage" ? I'm guessing here that the Sox are loaded with baggage, how do they ever play together ? Oh! the immorality. Yeah, that's not really the stuff people have a problem with Lawrie for (and if it was it'd be pretty laughable... he was involved with two Olympians, oh noes!) Beyond the helmet throwing incident, which was one of the better/worse on-field meltdowns I can remember, he just doesn't have a good reputation as a teammate - basically he's a first-degree red-ass without the performance to back it up. The problem is that Lawrie isn't good enough at baseball to be a pain in the backside. People will deal with your attitude if you're Barry Bonds or Reggie Jackson or Will Clark or even Jonathan Papelbon. But when you're only a marginal upgrade, and not even certainly, over Josh Rutledge? Then yeah, you consider that sort of stuff. I'm a bigger believe than anyone that winning leads to chemistry rather than the other way around, but why risk it for a player who doesn't make the team that much better? The fact that the White Sox couldn't even work out a trade for a second-tier prospect for him says something to me.

Abad will be a replacement pitcher for the D.R. in the WBC. Doesn't seem like wise timing on his part to me, queue up Scott.

Just show up...no cost. You can walk from one game to the other. Thanks. I'm hoping to make the drive Thursday and see team usa as well. I'm presuming the Team USA game will be treated like a regular spring training game, for which you'll need a ticket. Only the minor league stuff on the backfields is free. For anyone who is also a Spring Training Rookie, I would direct you to this great piece Will Woodward did last year when he was one as well: news.soxprospects.com/2016/04/spring-training-rookie-my-first-trip-to.html

Chris, I would be happy to send you a copy of the minor league game schedule, but, alas, I do not think I am up to the technical challenge.
Back to the complex this morning. Between the graduations (Devers is with the big league team so far this spring) and DD's trades, it just is not the same feeling at the minor league fields. Last year, I was going back in forth between fields often so as to try not to miss any of the top prospects. This year there are fields where there are very few legitimate prospects.
I did watch Dalbec for awhile. I am not a scout or anything so I can't really tell if he is any good. But it seems to me like he takes it seriously and is working to get better. While he was warming up playing catch, for example, each time he caught the ball he was practicing pivoting to make a through to first or doing the footwork he would need if he was catching a throw from and outfielder and pivoting to throw home. The other players around him were just throwing to get loose. Dalbec may not make it, but if he does not, I do not think it will be from lack of effort.
I got my first look at Groome today. He walked right by me on the way from the field back to the clubhouse. The physical description that this site has for him is still very accurate. I watched him throw a bullpen from about 30 feet away and threw a fence. Couldn't tell much from that distance. Still no sign of Jayce Ray. Chatham seems very tall for a shortstop. Nothing going on at the Major League practice field today, but as I was leaving shortly after 11, it appeared the major leaguers were out stretching and running sprits to get ready for this afternoons game.
By the way, I can confirm that again this year if you go to watch the minor leaguers on a day the Red Sox are playing at home, you will have to pay $10 to park, but if you leave before the Red Sox game starts and have kept the ticket they give you when you pay, they will give you back the $10 when you leave.
