Have they announced their intentions? Are they going to ask him to accept a minor league role after he clears waivers or are they releasing him?

Still liked him more than Crawford, so he has that going for him.

Not sure what the point of a minor league role would be. They will want Devers playing everyday at AAA..............I think he will be released upon clearing waivers

They should send him home, but I'm not going to assume anything.

Hopefully he doesn't elect free agency and have his contract count against the Luxury Tax. Wishful thinking probably.

You're right about Brock Holt however coming back. I'm not sure he's better then Lin. Come on. Since the start of 2014 he's hit .272/.335/.377 and he's a better defensive third baseman than Lin. He also much more capable in the outfield. Brock Holt is basically Lin's perfect-world projection. If Holt is healthy again (and I know that's a real "if") then he's one of the best utility players alive. He's stretched some as an every day third baseman and that usage for him is pretty far below optimal, but he's above replacement level there. He may be a better hitter, we don't have much to go on for Lin and it's hard not to be skeptical of the completely changed batting line for the guy, but I think he's a better fielder than Holt. I've watched the latter botch plays at third, with bad footwork that had him tagging himself instead of the runner sliding into the base. He's really exposed there if he plays for any length of time.

He does seem to get on base a lot. So, I looked it up. Lin has a .435 On Base Percentage and an .871 OPS. Even Holt can't do that. I think we found a new utility guy.
Pablo...RIP

Does this mean we can remove him from the 40 roster, bury him in Pawtucket and free up 20M from the payroll tax calc? I know we still owe the money but like Rusney does it give us room to acquire someone with a higher contract value?

Nope, his money will count against the tax until the end of the contract minus whatever salary any team is dumb enough to give him if any.

A year from now, I hope it will be Hanley's turn. They absolutely cannot let his 2019 option vest.

I posted this on 11-12-14. I think a Sandoval signing indicates this front office is bleepin clueless. And, I usually stick up for them. The drunk, rich guy throwing money around with no purpose. This fat arse will be 300 pounds of dead weight in a year two. With an un-moveable contract that a heavy crane couldn't move. We've got Cecchini looming. Possible Xander ends up there. My preference is Mookie. Tell me in two years that Mookie wouldn't be a better option at 3b than that fat turd.

Still liked him more than Crawford, so he has that going for him. Agreed. Say what you will about this deal, but at least they can swallow his contract as a sunk cost instead of having to package him with an all-star 1B to make him go away.

Thank god for 2013 Napoli, because without him our recent history would have been a lot less fun and Gonzalez would have been missed greatly even if people didn't love his attitude sometimes.

Imagine the alternate universe where in the 2014 offseason, the Red Sox moved Mookie to 3B and put Pablo's money towards Scherzer. They had about $65 million per year to spend to get to the cap and wasted just about all of it.

Was told Mookie didn't have the arm for 3B. Now, I see him gunning people down from RF. I did like the Hanley signing. Thought he could play 1B until Papi retired and move to DH.

I was on the right side of the Pablo signing also. These are the lessons which must be learned from this: 1) Do not overpay because of team needs 2) Do not overpay for middle tier players (2.5-3 WAR) 3) Do not sign fat players and expect them to age like everyone else 4) Do not sign players who have no plate discipline (maybe the only player with a similarly horrible contract was Josh Hamilton) 5) Do not overpay because of a lack of better options I wonder how that Panda marketing campaign helped the bottom line.
