I'm being a good poster and not talking in the injury news thread. With the news that Mata has a slight UCL tear, but they are going for treatment instead of TJ. Can anyone think of a case where that worked? Price is the only one that comes to mind. Also, always remember that Tricep is code for UCL worry. RT

Let me ask something to the guys understanding some of the kind of obscure rules.. Mata is now unfortunately down now all season and a lot of 2022. my question is options.. He's been optioned already this year. Would this surgery, in the eventuality he takes some time to fully come back possibly lead to him getting 4 options eventually.. Like Brandon Workman did? Does that make sense? Don't get me wrong, was hoping Mata would make his appearance by the AS break this season, but of course it's not happening. Looking towards future possibilities is all. No. You get a fourth option year if you use all three before you've played in 5 full seasons. Not sure how last year will count but Mata's on roughly his 5th year already. I also don't think Brandon Workman was even optioned three times. The only Red Sox I can remember this applying to are Craig Hansen and Jose Iglesias. I could absolutely be forgetting something though.

Poor guy and bad luck to the team. I thought he was going to be a big contributor as a 4/5 starter next year. We'll probably see him in meaningful innings in 2024 at the earliest.

Question on Brian Mata, shouldn’t he be on the IL 60 day list. Thus creating another opening on the 40 man roster.?
Thanks

Thanks Putting him on the 60-day IL would require calling him up to the majors and would lead to his accruing service time while on the IL. In the end, his taking up a spot on the 40 and burning an option is much more preferable to losing a year of team control.

Definitely not the way we wanted this to go. Timeline looks like the end of next year for a return. The question is does he return as a starter or in the bullpen. Silver lining. He’ll still be 23 years old when he returns. CRAP

I figured Sale was starting tonight, but now I'm not so sure.

I figured Sale was starting tonight, but now I'm not so sure. I think it makes more sense to start Pivetta tonight and Sale tomorrow (with E-Rod on Sunday). That way Sale would start Friday against the Yankees instead of Wednesday against the Mets. He'd also pitch the final game against the Orioles in Baltimore and have 4 days rest to start a Tuesday Wild Card team if need be. Otherwise we see Pivetta against the Yankees which I think is a bad idea. I'd rather see him against the Mets. Sorry this has nothing to do with Mata. As far as Mata goes, glad to hear he's back throwing a bit. At some point in a future season he could impact the bullpen in the late innings.

You normally hear 12-18 months as the rehab duration for TJ. I would guess there's a narrower window once a guy starts throwing. Does anyone have any data on that? Five months until pitchers and catchers...

Five months until pitchers and catchers... I wouldn't exactly call that throwing. It's only 5 months since TJS and I'd be shocked if he's ready by June.

Curious if any new updates are out there about Bryan. Last report I saw was from Speier in early/mid April mentioning he's going to start throwing live BP soon.

He’ll be one of mid-season biggest additions if they choose to put him in the pen to accelerate his rehab.

Lack of quality secondary pitch(es)? Maybe more that his stuff plays up better as a high leverage reliever more than it doesn't pkay as a starter. But also injury history. He has had a hard time staying on the mound. Shorter stints might help that. Ultimaltemy Ian and Chris might be be better resources . . . . .

I wouldn’t give up on him as a SP quite yet but it’s certainly trending in that direction
He should be an impact reliever at the absolute worst with the stuff he has. Can’t wait to see him back on a mound

Any word on Brock Bell
The Sox have so much pitching talent rehabbing.
