Moreland with a very nice play. He cannot scoop but that was a good play. Panda on the bench with the lead late. Nice.

So gratifying to see that Robbie Scott's success wasn't a fluke last year. Really valuable contributions this season.

For all the bitching about Boyer, Farrell did exactly what he should do: save relief appearances for the NY series. Boyer did his job, and he brought on Scott to eliminate Davis. With any luck, Kimbrel won't have to show his face today. Vision, guys and gals, vision.

Probably all about his limited use - 22 G this year, only 12.1 innings. Only 5 hits, 11 Ks.

I was okay with JF leaving him in because I thought he looked decent in the 7th and had only thrown 12ish pitches. I disagree somewhat with your save appearances statement. You shouldn't conserve relief appearances in a close game because you're saving them for potential use next series. You save them when you're up by lots of runs.

Farrell and the Sox integrating basepath aggression while up 3/4 runs in the ninth. Yeah Buck, how do you like me know?

The more I watch Marrero, the more impressed I am with his defense.

Excellent to tie the series. Let's go to NY and do some damage. 2 down.

I got home in time to catch the last pitch of the game. I liked it. I'm glad the Sox were able to turn the series into a disappointing series for Buck Showalter and the Orioles after the O's had already taken the first two games. Also good to see Benintendi snap out of his slump.
Here's hoping that the Red Sox can stand up to the Yankees and take 2 of 3.

John Farrell had a nice little series for himself this weekend. If Eduardo didn't slip and fall, the Sox could of easily taken at least 3 out 4. Little bad luck there but the Sox did what they needed to do with Price and Sale on the mound.
Time to stomp the yankees and put a end to their cute little inflated run they have had the first two months of the season.

Maybe if things get rough, they go to Hembree, or even Kimbrel, but why start that way? They brought Boyer up for this role and he performed. Given the situation with a 6-3 lead, I think they should be planning ahead to be able to use their relief pool as flexibly as possible if they can get away with it. It worked well this time.

My only issue was with Farrell this series...why does he refuse to PH Travis? For example, pinch hitting for Marrero in the 7th (?) would have been perfect. Worked out due to a stupid throw, but seemed like a no brainer to me.

If they were tied or behind it would make sense to pinch hit for Marrero there, but not with the lead. It's a pretty notable defensive downgrade from Marrero to Sandoval.

I know Marrero has played well defensively and had that two-homer game, but he's now hitting .171/.213/.329 (35 wRC+) this year, and I'm not sure we can expect much (any) improvement offensively. That's not just bad, that's sub-replacement-level bad, even with the nice glove. As a defensive replacement and pinch runner type, maybe I could live with it, but he's getting close to full-time starter's reps with Pedroia out. Holt's injury has been a big hit to their depth.

Imagine if we had Shaw and Doubon....Dombroski has eliminated much of the talent and depth at the top of the Red Sox minor league system for which we are seeing it exposed in a big way this year, particularly at 2nd and 3rd base. The worst is that he will probably be around for at least two more years which will allow him clean out most of the remaining talent.
