Man, watching Devers interview makes me feel old. Amen. The bright side to him looking like a 12-year-old is that all of the dunderheads who yell "he's older than he says" about every Caribbean player haven't shown up for him.

Raudes has faced the minimum through 3. 2 hits erased by a CS and a double play.

Raudes with a decent game:
6.0IP 3H 2B 4K (with 2HBP)
90p/50s 4GO/4FO
SalSox up 1-0 top 8th
He was relieved by Logan Boyd who's still sporting a zero ERA since his promotion.

Tyler Dearden making his debut, batting 9th and playing RF. He doubled in his first AB.

Buttrey to Pawtucket is weird.
- He was sent to Portland 2 days ago (although maybe that can be explained by the PawSox not having room for him then, but having room for him now) - The PawSox have Maddox, Scott, and Travis who have to report, so while they have 2 roster spots now, those are going to fill up fast. You also figure one or both of Velazquez and Johnson is going to come back down in the very near future.
My guess is that either:
(a) this is a paper move to make space on the Portland roster; or (b) the Red Sox know one or more PawSox are getting traded in the somewhat near future. (Less fun, but they might also just plan on cutting a player or two as well.)
EDIT: Confirmed it's real.

Rusney Castillo back to the DL. Left knee tendinitis. Even more roster movement. But that brings them to their 25 man roster with the people that haven't reported yet.
EDIT: Not connected to his recent DL stint. That was a groin pull.

Hate to see this. His development has been stifled so much due to the persistent injury bug. Hopefully he can overcome it. Still young, even for a catcher.

Other reporters' tweets clarified that the infield thing is in addition to catching - you can read the Speier tweets as saying he's being moved off the position entirely for now. The issue seems to be that he can't catch often enough to catch up on the at-bats he's missing because of these injuries.

Dearden replaced by Durden.
And then there's this from the log, (Orioles, new rule extras): "Alexis Torres starts inning at 2nd base." but I don't see it in the box. If he scores a run, does he get a run scored credited ?

I don't have a huge problem with him playing 1B/3B if it's because the current ankle injury is keeping him from being behind the plate. He needs AB's no matter what, and if they deem the risk is minimal in making the injury worse, then go for it.
I assume at this point we might not even see him catch again until next season after a full off-season if rehab, etc., but hopefully he's still able to become the Sox primary catcher not too far into the '18 season.
Plus, if his bat begins to play again, he can always be up in September as a non-catcher

If they just need him to get PAs while his ankle isn't healthy enough to catch everyday, they'd just DH him. Playing him at 1B/3B suggests that they think he might get playing time at those positions in the majors, which I continue to think is a bad idea.

Is his ankle injury related to the one he had last year? I know those ankle injuries can be brutal and can take more than a year before they feel right.

From the ProJo, Brian MacPherson: " Source: www.providencejournal.com/sports/20170707/blake-swihart-still-dealing-with-discomfort-in-left-ankleWhat still bothers me about the Swihart episode is the way they abandoned him after a week. During the preseason, there were a bunch of press clippings of Price admiring Vazquez. Felt like a few vet pitchers didn't show up and they needed a fall guy.

Just thinking about the different arm slots between 3rd base and catching. We all remember spring training right?

If I had to guess, the Sox are showcasing Swihart for a trade in the deadline with this 1B/3B experiment.
His trade value is low but he's not the worst throw in to have for a rebuilding team. If a team cab find a way to keep him healthy, then good luck. The guy is made out of glass.

Hopefully Swihart can at least get consistent PAs the rest of the year and try to fix his offense, then build strength back in his ankle. I don't think he'll ever have the bat to start anywhere but C, and he has basically no trade value now, so I'm just hoping he can come back as a viable catcher, because Vazquez and Leon are backup catchers playing every day.

If they have a bunch of guys they're trying to get playing time, then they might want to have him getting time at other positions as well so as to keep DH open more often. But that said, I see your point. If it were just 1B, then fine - they're playing Ryan Court and Matt Dominguez there right now. But they've got a guy they want getting the at-bats at 3B every game, so it's not like that's a more convenient spot than DH to play him. It could be that they're worried about the ankle going forward, which would make sense given that this is an injury from last year that's still bothering him.

Not much of a prospect anymore, but Mike Olt has been hot the past couple months. improved his K/BB a bit and his ISO is up. He's 28 and I'm AA, but once of course was one of the bigger name prospects in baseball.

He's 28 and I'm AA, but once of course was one of the bigger name prospects in baseball. I played against him in HS. He hit the longest ball of any HS player I have ever seen. His HS didn't have an outfield fence, so it was the longest inside the park HR, but my God did he mash in HS. Had a nice career at UConn before moving onto the professional ranks. Kind of fizzled out when he got to the big leagues.
