What more confirmation do you want? It's a low budget signing don't expect to be hearing a lot about that unless he tears it up.

They describe him as choosing between catcher and SS not long ago. Is that common?

Cuban shortstop Erisbel Arruebarruena has defected according to Ben Badler. Ben Badler ?@benbadler 39m I saw Arruebarruena in person in March and July. Instincts, quick first step, hands, range, arm strength—just a joy to watch in the field. The bat, however, is a major source of concern with Arruebarruena, even more so than with Iglesias and more along the lines of Marlins Cuban shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria. More from Badler

Only one I can tell you anything about is Tovar, who was playing for Boston's Liga Paralela team in VZ. By the way, big miss on my part during July 2 stuff, but Jhonathan Diaz apparently pitched a game for the Boston LP team last year. There were also a number of guys who were signed during the LP season and shortly after (Lucena, Lameda are two that I remember off the top of my head).

I notice the Sox have been signing more and more from VZ. Is this because of the promotion of Eddie Romero? Because there was a time they were not geting many from VZ pretty recently like in the Theo era.

Under Craig Shipley, the Red Sox made a concerted effort to try and dig up prospects from previously under-scouted areas like Australia, Taiwan, and Europe (remember Swen Huijer?). Unfortunately, I personally believe their Latin/South American scouting and development program started to lag behind that of other teams, which is one of the reasons Shipley was dismissed and Eddie Romero was hired. The Red Sox are certainly still active in Asia/Pacific (see Daniel McGrath and Tzu-Wei Lin), but I think they've also re-emphasized the D.R./Venezuela as well as expanding in countries like Panama and Mexico.

The top bonuses are still going to the Dominican market but there does seem to be more interest in Venezuelan players. Probably due to renewed emphasis from the scouting department.

The acclimation of Venezuelan players to the US is typically a smoother path because Venezuela has a much better educational system and does not have the profound depth and breadth of the poverty seen in the Dominican. This is another factor in scouting Venezuela. Talent, of course, is the most important consideration, but do not underestimate how hard it is for athletes from some cultures to adjust to the U.S.

Rusney Castillo from Cuba has defected to the Dominican Republic. He's primarily a CF but has played 2B, and 3B. Here's a link about him: www.havanatimes.org/?p=100665

He'd be a free agent, not subject to the international cap.

Sounds a little like Linares. I don't see it. Castillo has stolen 74 bases in the last three seasons and can play the middle infield. Linares last stole a base in 2010 and is exclusively an outfielder.

I meant Linares when they signed him. "Gold-glove" CF, 5' 9" (though 214 lbs), fast, multi-talented, had a good AFL sonsofsamhorn.net/topic/58608-red-sox-sign-another-cuban-juan-carlos-linares/from a member who had seen him play a lot: "plays a gold glove CF but is also a great pitcher having the saves record for a rookie in Cuba. He used to be the cleanup hitter in the same junior national team that had Kendry Morales in 2001. Even though he is 5'9 his body is pretty strong and is a very intelligent and fast runner. "

What about Aledmis Diaz? I think he's definitely worth a look. He could possibly take over at SS or 3B after some adjustment time in the minors. He's got a very strong arm and good power potential.
"He's is a 6’1”, 185-pound shortstop with favorable reviews from evaluators for his projectable bat and power potential, as well as solid range and a strong arm. While he’s ineligible to sign with a team until February after falsifying his age last offseason, there already is plenty of interest in the 23-year-old. According to Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com, Diaz has been working out in Culiacan, Mexico and has drawn interest from the Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees."
better view of his swing at 0:32
