Wow - I started this thread last year....and this is my debut for this year! Oh, to have Workman on that list instead of Hembree.... Yeah I found this sitting out on the back pages of this Forum and I didn't want to hijack it by starting a new thread. And after the death of the 2018 Red Sox roster building thread I thought there was still need for a thread to discuss a topic like this. The Sox have a lot of writing reliever options in the system. I left him Hembree in because it could be any one of those players who got on the option that make the team.IMO Robby Scott isn't safe to make the major league club out of spring-training and he has two options. Poyner Jerez or Beeks could make the team coming out of the bullpen.

I'd DFA Marrero before Brentz unless they can trade one of their 18 middle relief pitchers.

I'd DFA Marrero before Brentz unless they can trade one of their 18 middle relief pitchers. I can see the logic behind that. Marrero has a better shot at clearing waivers, Brentz’s power is more valuable than Deven’s defense, and we have more guys that can be Marrero than we have guys that can be Brentz.

Despite paying $110M, the Sox might not be willing to commit to JDM as our 4th outfielder just yet. I mean, he doesn't even have a B in his name, which is obviously a requirement. I'll say the fact that all three starting OFs can successfully man center is a huge boon to roster flexibility. We can keep a shaky LF as the only OF depth and still field an excellent defense.

As someone who thought Brentz was the obvious move before, I'm rethinking that now. The Red Sox still have WAY more middle infield depth than outfield depth. If you DFA Brentz and one of the top 4 gets hurt, you're looking at the likes of Steve Selsky or Aneury Tavarez as the next guy up, or perhaps Lin. Meanwhile, Holt, Marrero, Hernandez, Lin, and, to some degree, Swihart are all redundant right now. Marrero feels like the move. And I think he might get claimed, but the lack of options on a player like him is a killer and will scare some teams off.

Try to keep him healthy. And if there’s one team that knows how to play with their roster to accommodate a transcendent-hitting DH with limited defensive value, it’s the Red Sox.

Henry has a skin condition that makes it imperative for him to cover his skin from direct sunlight. Florida, even this time of year, can do a number on uncovered skin. In the summer, in Boston, Henry dresses the same way. Thanks for that. Now it makes sense. He sure looked out of place with the other owners and DD being in golf shirts. Having that medical condition use be a pain. I wonder if the sun resistant clothing made by coolibar and others would help someone with his condition. I assume his doctors would have informed him if it would help.

As has been the case in recent years, the Rochester Red Wings have posted their spring training schedule first. So we have a starter schedule, with games starting March 14. If the Red Wings are playing the Norfolk Tides, we know the Sox affiliates are playing their Rays counterparts, and if Rochester is playing Durham, we know the Sox are playing the Orioles. When Rochester plays Pawtucket, the AA teams will also play in the same location and the A-ball teams of the Sox and Twins will play at the other parent team's complex. The Red Sox minor league schedule is now out. I got one at the complex today. I can’t figure out how to attach it here, but would be willing to e-mail it to someone who knows how so it can be shared with the board. Pedroia was out playing catch on the warm up field today. Thornburg threw 80 pitches on flat ground. Rodriguez was throwing on flat ground to some guy named Pedro, who seemed to be offering him advice or encouragement. Not that it means anything, but Holt was taking infield with the rest of the infielders who are going to make the team. Marrero and Lin were not with that group. Some of the minor leaguers are already here. I saw Hill, Washington, and Ockiney serving as runners during infield drills.

Hey carmenfanzone, can you by any chance at least post which teams are traveling or staying behind on Monday, 3/26 (Rays) and Tuesday, 3/27 (O's)? Ian and I are going to probably be down there those days and that'd help for planning purposes!
Thanks!
EDIT: Come to think of it, if you could email chatfield@soxprospects.com, icundall@soxprospects.com, and mike@soxprospects.com, that'd be awesome too!

Anybody know of any ways to get these games outside of the market? In addition, 3/2 at St. Louis will be on MLB Network and 3/23 at NYY and 3/27 vs. CHC will be on ESPN.

Done. the Red Sox class A teams will be at home on the 26th.The double and triple A teams will be at home on the 27th. The major league team is at home on both those days so you may have to pay to park, especially on the 27 which is a day game. If you could come on the 21st through 23rd the major leaguers are away all three days.

Sox staff trip is officially 3/23-25. Ian and I are staying after for a day or two because our priorities are completely screwed up.

So Hanley is current slotted to hit 3rd, per Cora, so maybe something like:
Betts Benintendi* Ramirez Martinez Bogaerts Devers* Nunez Bradley* Vazquez
?
On days Moreland starts, everyone moves up one? That said, I can't imagine not hitting JDM third. That seems obvious to me.
And holy crap does that lineup look better than last time.

I wonder if the Moreland signing was made because they knew he wouldn't complain about a lack of playing time while Hanley was raking? And that many other 1B options would be hesitant to sign with Boston while knowing that A) Hanley was still on the team and B) that they were very likely to sign JDM. I imagine there will be a lot of defensive replacement moves.
Moreland is a very good insurance option for Hanley struggling as well as a defensive replacement. It may have been much more difficult to get someone better than him.

I'm ok with Hanley hitting 3rd if he earns it (although I'd think JDM 3rd and Hanley 4th makes more sense). But don't just had it to him. But if they're 3rd/4th, I think you want Devers 5th and Xander 6th (unless he's hitting 1st or 2nd, which doesn't seem likely right now) - for the right/left lineup balance. That's a long lineup.

Reminder that number four hitters generally hit with more runners on base than number three hitters and so, with all else equal, you want your better hitter to hit fourth as opposed to third.

Wonder if Cora will be more traditional and put the speed in Nunez 9th with Vazquez 7th

At first I was surprised at Cora's comments regarding Hanley hitting 3rd, but after thinking about it all night, it might be a good idea. Maybe it's because my 7 year old son has been watching games 3 and 4 of the ALDS every day for 4 months ?? Every time I look up Hanley is hitting a laser somewhere. I like him at 3 and JDM at 4 more than vice versa because I think Hanley will benefit more from JD's protection than the other way around. A happy, healthy and confident Hanley could change the dynamic of this lineup. Also, I'd definitely prefer Devers 5th and Xander 6th.

Yeah, forgot about the optimal batting order data. I was just thinking getting JDM a few more AB's. I think the big question is what version of Hanley will we see. If it's 2017 version, he should be hitting 6th or 7th. If it's 2016 Hanley, then 3rd would be great.
