Hopefully they don’t go Núñez. I’d love to see him back.

Hopefully they don’t go Núñez. I’d love to see him back. It's such a shame how small market teams can't compete for top talent in MLB's system.

Baseball America Verified account @baseballamerica 6m6 minutes ago More The Padres signed 33-year-old SoCal native Allen Craig, a first baseman and corner outfielder, to a minor league deal following three poor seasons at Triple-A Pawtucket in the Red Sox system. Poor ? I think a more apt description would be pitiful....wretched....etc...etc...

I am curious what people think of the Brewers off-season in general. I don't know the prospects involved, but even thinking of going for it in the short run.... I don't know what to think. The Cain signing seems clearly like a long-term overpay (likely, but is it worth it if you are all in for the next year? And... if you are all in for the next year, have they done nearly enough to get there? Would adding, say, Darvish even be enough to compete with the Cubs (probably, I think)... but for the WS?

I think the division is in flux. It's a 3 team race from where I sit and the team that adds the best pitcher from here on out (Brewers/Cards?Cubs) will win the NLC.

If Cain ages like Tori Hunter, he will have value over the length of the contract. If not then maybe it is an overpay. If the BrewCrew can make it to the NLCS I'll be rooting for Bob Uecker.

Believe it or not, someone on Twitter (I have a rough idea who) complained to me that there was no 2018 Non-Sox Thread. So here you all go.

This shocking, almost end of January and nothing is happening. I thought Bruce might start a run, then the same with Cain, yet nothing. Then reports the free agents are going to start a spring training camp. Which tells me all I need to know. Both sides are playing games. I've been willing to wait on Martinez, but you need to draw a line in the sand on when you just move on. That date has to be getting close. I want my full team ready for Spring training, now like 3 weeks away.

That is terrible. If it was public that he was sick, I had totally missed it.

Kevin Towers, who rose from a minor league pitching coach to the general manager of two big league clubs in a career that spanned nearly 30 years, died on Monday from thyroid cancer. He was 56.
Towers served as the Padres general manager from 1995-2009, overseeing four division titles and a 1998 World Series team, and was the Diamondbacks general from 2011-14, overseeing another division title in 2011. He most recently worked as a Reds scout and special assistant to the general manager.
Towers also worked for the Yankees in 2010 and scouted for the Pirates early in his career from 1991-93.
Towers was a standout pitcher at Brigham Young and was drafted first overall by the Padres in the secondary phase of the 1982 draft, but injuries ended his playing career in Triple-A. He spent two years as a pitching coach at Class A Spokane, moved into scouting with the Padres and Pirates, became the Padres pro scouting director and finally was promoted to their GM, all in a six-year span.
[Mods, not sure if this should be on a different forum. If so, please move it.]

Bryant is a stud and Gray's good, but in general that whole 2013 draft was just kind of bad. JJ Cooper from BA touched on this today:

Watching a guy with mechanics that seemed that good lose his control was really bizarre.
If there's a moral to this story, it's Never Send Your Prospects to Lancaster. (Note: that 2014 Lancaster team was really good and disproves the moral entirely, though McCullers was pretty bad there also).
Appel also has more grace dealing with jerks on twitter than I would:

So at least the Red Sox and Betts were far apart on their filing numbers. Shelby Miller just won his arbitration case against the Diamondbacks. He filed at $4.9M. The team filed at $4.7M.
How do you not just both agree to meet at $4.8 at that point?

How do you not just both agree to meet at $4.8 at that point? Yeah that's ridiculous. If I was the arbiter, I would look at both sides and say "why are we here, especially you D-Backs? You don't have an extra 200 thousand for payroll when you're making billions?"
