How about giving Swihart some games to catch? Leon looks like he clicks with Porcello. But everyone else on this team struggles Cora gives them a breather but the catching it doesn’t make sense. Like I said before they let Salty catch even though Yi was a different manager. Unless Cora doesn’t want to hurt his catching Tatum. I like Vasquez but he does stuff that annoys me. Like the time bench clearing brawl he didn’t do enough to protect Kelly. He has to be a all around catcher not just practing on his throwing out stealers.
I want to see Swihart catch. Even just let him catch ERod. They have time together in the minors.

The Sox aren't going to do it. Henry doesn't like to be too fiscal with real money. Right, they care about the future and don't want to destroy it by having no financial flexibility. Kinda like how they're not going to leave the farm system with no prospects left at all just to give a team projected to win 99 games an extra 1-2% chance of winning the WS. No, they don't want to pay the extra 12 percent ontop of the other surcharge. They made a statement that they didn't care about prospects when they hired Dombrowski.

Then why are any left? They don't care about having the ability to replace someone who gets hurt when they're in first place? Really? You honestly believe they are that stupid? There were even reports that Dombrowski wasn't allowed to trade any more prospects last season at one point. If MLB were the NBA and Realmuto was a 25 year old LeBron James, then I'd agree. Mortgage every bit of future to trade for the guy because the team then has a 100% chance of winning the championship as long as he doesn't get hurt. But this ain't that and a 2% increase in winning the World Series is not worth mortgaging what is left of the entire farm system. There's really no point in discussing this with you. Have fun in fantasy land where everyone bats 1.000 and the team goes 162-0. Ba-bye.

This is my last post on this so no need to tell me to stop bickering. Look at how many WS winners there are with uber-regular season teams.

Dombrowski has also since denied those reports and has traded prospects since that report, by the way. Why in the world would the Sox employ a GM and literally strip him of his power? Like think about that for a minute. That makes zero sense. Don't believe everything you read. Of course you don't want to discuss something you're closed minded in. You were the one who told me that the Chris Sale trade rumors were "total fabrication" because "the Sox can't strip the system!!!" Yet it happened and Dombrowski remains the GM. It's like you're in denial about a simple idea of making the team substantially better and want to hear none of it because you're scared about the 2020 depth of this team. This team won't have a better window to win probably for a long long time. The fact that you think that this team has no needs is also weird. The Sox might have one of the 5 worst offensive catching groups in the majors unless they make a trade.

I don't see how any of these teams have to do with the 2018 Boston Red Sox. Not to mention that you completely don't see the fact that I'm not here "trying to build a uber team." I want the best chances of winning the division and the postseason. You fail to realize that the Yankees are a really talented team and can win the division this year.

Dombrowski just offered Jason Groome for Manny Machado this winter. Yet, John Henry has told told him stop trading prospects....right.
I have no doubt Dombrowski pulls the trigger if he wants Realmuto as much I think they need to.

Interesting back and forth.
I honestly can see both points of view here.
I agree with JimEd that building an uberteam is dangerous and it doesn't exactly increase the likelihood of winning the Series by that much.
And it doesn't make sense to empty out the farm system to get Realmuto.
But I do see where Pedro is coming from.
The Sox are built to win over the next three years and then after that who knows? And in year 2 of 3 the Sox might not have Kimbrel and probably don't have Pomeranz.
In year 3 of 3 it's unlikely they have all of Bogaerts, Porcello, and Sale.
After year 3 it's very questionable that Mookie Betts is still a Red Sox.
But in 2018 for the Red Sox all of these guys are still here.
Meanwhile the farm system is very dry and the fact of the matter is that the Yankees are a great team and have a strong farm system - they're toward the beginning of their window.
Realmuto's presence doesn't dramatically increase their chance of winning the Series once they're in the post-season but his presence could increase their chance of staying the hell out of the Wild Card Game. That's not a game the Sox want to be in.
And the Yankees are going to win between 95 - 100 games if not more, so it's going to take a near uberteam to beat the Yankees and stay out of that game.
So the biggest question is what will Realmuto cost to acquire??
I imagine a lot, but what exactly?
Do the Marlins like Swihart as a catcher? If the Sox don't and the Marlins are interested in developing him, do you part with Swihart? Of course. I'd prefer the Sox to develop Swihart but Cora even said in a perfect world you develop him, but that's not the situation in Boston.
So beyond Swihart what else are you willing to give up? Personally if our best shot at winning is over the next few years then having Poyner and Beeks could be huge. So I'd be reluctant to deal them.
I'm sure they start looking at Mata, Houck, and Groome. That's a lot tougher for me. I think the Sox will need these arms, but then again, they're very risky. I'd hate to part with any of those three, but I'd think they'd have to surrender one of them.
The Sox don't have much else to offer. Brian Johnson probably won't be around by then.
It's a tough call. You look at the system and there's not a ton of talent that projects to be ready by 2021 or so. They have very little positional talent (no heir apparent for Bogaerts or Bradley or Pedroia or catching or even 1b) and the pitching is promising, but it's not like they can't miss.
I think the safer thing to do is upgrade the bullpen without surrendering Beeks or Poyner (using a 2nd tier arm) and give Swihart a chance, but we'll see.

Champs, Swihart isn't going to get his chance here though. I don't know how anyone can even consider it even a consideration at this point with the way the Sox have been using him.
I really want to see what Thornburg is before even considering bullpen arms. He could change the whole complexion of the bullpen.
You can't give up on JBJ with his solid track record either. So what else is there to consider?
Catcher, and there is a really good one on a team that has been dumping everyone lately.

This is nonsense. Pitch framing as a skill is entirely dependent on the umpires being bad, so if his pitch framing is antiquated it's a sign the umpires are doing a better job. It means he's not stealing balls anymore. If his framing numbers aren't as good it means he's gotten worse at it or the umpires are better at identifying it. It's not nonsense. Todd Frazier has even called out the league and it's umpires being as terrible as ever this year. Some are missing strikes. Some are randomly calling balls strikes. It's mostly related to how good they are at identifying a quality strikezone. Vazquez has stolen a few strikes, but he also been not getting calls too. David Price's last start being example number one. Vazquez framed a pitch for strike three to end the 4th inning, didn't get the call. They gave up 5 more runs after that missed strike 3 call. He framed it well, but didn't get the call. 4 innings later the Rangers threw a pitch a inch lower to a Sox batter, and got the call. The Sox dugout flipped out for good reason. Look I'm not going to argue about the theory of pitch framing versus bad umpiring (because it's a agrument that'll lead to no where), but imo the umpires are so bad that pitch framing is indeed antiquated. It's mostly random, in the eyes of the flawed umpire. What he’s pointing out is an inherent contradiction in logic. Pitch framing is more valuable the less consistently umpires correctly call balls and strikes. That’s an unarguable reality. Now, if you want to argue that umps know Vasquez’s reputation and are overcorrecting, that would be fair but many of the saavier posters here will ask for non-anecdotal, verifiable statistics to back up that claim.
