They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

Hoping the first game sets the tone for this series. If not then the second game.

Devers to the DL with a sore shoulder. Lin called up. Hopefully, just a precaution and not something that lingers.

Do All Star Break days count towards DL time? If so, the timing of this could've been much worse. Just hope the rest will be enough.

And that's counting yesterday's game and these next two games against lefty starters as part of those 6 games.

It just gives him a long break without missing many games. Great use of the AS break. He's gotta get more rest anyway because he's so young.

3 years ago, Price and Happ signed a 7 year deal and a 3 year deal. 3 years later Happ and Price have the same ERA and number of walks. Happ has more innings pitched and strikeouts. This suggests the Sox could have had made better decisions with their money at the time.

Yeah, please explain the rationale after the 2015 season under which you could reasonably say it made more sense to sign JA Happ than David Price. Happ is 3 years older and his best season from 2011-2015 was worse than Price's worst season during that time.

This suggests the Sox could have had made better decisions with their money at the time. That sounds like some serious Monday morning quarterbacking. David Price was coming off some excellent seasons. I believe he won the Cy Young in either 2014 or 2015 and had a really good run with Toronto when the Sox were looking to sign an ace. Nothing in Happ's track record was more appealing than David Price. When I would think of excellent pitchers prior to his signing I would mentally compare them to David Price who I thought was for the most part consistently excellent (or at least really good when he wasn't excellent). So even though I wanted Lester back, once that fell through, and it was time to sign an ace, David Price looked like THE guy. Unfortunately he's not quite the same pitcher. He's kind of streaky and I think we'll see a good streak soon because David Price isn't a guy as likely to carry a 4.44 ERA. It'll go down. It was 3.66 two outings ago so it's not like he's been lousy all year. I think the Sox made the best decision they could at the time. They didn't want to give up any of the jewels in their farm system as they had already given up a nice haul to get Kimbrel (I liked that deal then and I still like it now and I'll still remember to like it when Logan Allen becomes good.). So going the free agency route was a very viable option, especially considering that the Sox didn't have to give up a draft pick to get him. A year later, Price is merely good, not really an ace, and the Sox saw Sale available and decided to go ahead and part with some of their best prospects (and to Dombrowski's credit, he chose well as he dealt Moncada and Kopech and hung onto Devers and Benintendi). Looking at how things went down from the time Dombrowski has been here, I think the decisions in these instances were very rational. At the time I didn't want to see Moncada and Kopech go for Sale as much as I wanted Sale. Thought it was too risky. I was wrong.

I’d bet that exactly zero people in the entire world would have been crazy enough to predict that, including you. Maybe it’s time to reload that OOTP save game and do it over.

I really hope we win in these next two years so we don’t have to wonder about all these what ifs.

The 2015 season happens. The Red Sox staff is composed of a unique combination of bad pitchers and pitchers pitching badly. They fire Cherington and hire Dombrowski to focus on the major league club. "I got this." Fastforward to 2016 Spring Training. JA Happ, with a 5.2 bWAR total over the previous six years, walks in wearing a "No. I am the ace" t-shirt. Dombrowski spins slightly in his chair and lets out his maniacal, genius laugh. fin

Happ is 3 years older and his best season from 2011-2015 was worse than Price's worst season during that time. I don't think it enhances Happ by any measure. I think it shows how far Price keeps falling. There has been 7 contracts of 150 million handed out to pitchers the last 5 or 6 years (suggesting the very pitchers in baseball). Three of these pitchers never made it to free agency. The Sox targeted the worst or second worst pitcher of that group so far. That's where the problem lies.

It does make sense. The team couldn't manage to target and spend money on the two best options in the starting pitching market the past 4 years at a time where they really needed started pitching.

Exactly, Chris. Everyone who is good that the Red Sox don't sign is a mistake, even when they sign the year before the other guy they signed. If Dave Dombrowski was going to sign David Price, why the hell didn't he just get hired a year earlier and sign Max Scherzer? Why don't you understand this obvious point?

So you predicted an AL East veteran pitcher that was crazy elite his whole career would have injuries? David Price was about the safest pitcher you could sign. A guy having a HOF career. Pitching is risky and injuries happen, but no one thought this would happen. It was always maybe the backend of this deal is bad or he opts out and we have to give him an even bigger deal. What are the winning lottery numbers this week?
