This has to be said. I'm really glad that the Red Sox aren't in the position where Lance Lynn could improve the team. I think they have about 15 starters better than him. Just a little sarcasm there. I'm seriously not getting this move unless the rumor about Severino to the DL is true and then they're cooked anyways. Who is he going to replace ? Even Sonny Gray has put up better numbers. fWAR .7 to 1.3.

If they can pry the Reds relievers because they have term, I would do something with them. It seems they are also receptive to our prospects. But I don’t want a redundant piece just to make a move in the pen. A swing and miss reliever please or nothing.
There are a lot of relievers out there and not many buyers left. DD could parlay something. Kinsler was a masterstroke.
We just need what ever key pieces are on the dl to heal up and hope for good health for the stretch drive here. We have something special happening.

Both Thornburg and Brasier looked good last night, my only question is how many more innings do they have in them? Thornburg is at 25 innings for the year, after not pitching last year. Does he have another 30-40 innings in him for a deep playoff run? Braiser is already at 50 1/3 innings, with him pitching 30 and 60 innings the last two years. He hasn't gone over 60 innings since he was a starter in 2010. Workman last year was a perfect example of what a major jump in innings does to a pitcher. He wore down jumping from 20 innings to just under 70 innings. His last 10 innings were horrible.
So given we have addressed litterally every issue we had, I would target another reliever just in case. Given that the cost isn't that high. This is our year!

Osuna should be interesting to the Astros: I can't believe the Blue Jays got that much for Osuna. I would have given a 50% chance for the Blue Jays just releasing him instead of trading him.

According to what I read on MLB.com the Sox talked to the Nats last night about Herrera, but the Nats being the Nats, they decided they're only willing to discuss Gio Gonzalez or Hellickson, so they have pulled back their relievers and are going to keep them.
According to Sean McAdam the Sox are interested in the Giants lefties Will Smith and Tony Watson but the Giants, too, don't know if they're coming or going. You'd think Cueto's upcoming surgery would provide them with a clue.
And Brad Ziegler doesn't have a new address yet.
So here we are on the last day of 7/31 and the good relief choices are dwindling down. If Keone Kela had only cost something like Darwinzon Hernandez plus a lesser prospect I would have loved to have seen the Sox get him. Same thing regarding Soria.
But now with the Sox right around the tax line, I'd be fine if they went over for Watson although Dombrowski could conceivably get enough cash back or even Pomeranz to keep them under the limit.
I don't think Brad Ziegler is worth going over the limit for. The only thing he really offers that they don't have is a different look, a groundball pitcher who isn't a fastball/curveball kind of guy. I like Ziegler, but with him, you kind of need a lefty on standby and the Sox don't really have that, unless they get Watson or Smith.
At that point you're getting complicated and I don't see that. I imagine the price for Kirby Yates is expensive - does Preller ever want anything other than your best? If it was Kela's price, I'd like it. I like Stammen, but wouldn't surrender a lot to get him and don't think he's necessarily better than what they have.
And I have no interest in Rodney (can't stand watching him) and Norris (don't need a guy like that poisoning the fun in the clubhouse and he is mediocre anyways).
If the Sox are going to go over I'd still be interested in Beltre, but I don't think the Sox are going over and I don't think a guy like Ziegler is worth moving 10 spots back in the draft for. I'd do it for Herrera but the Nats aren't inclined to do so, even though they should consider selling. They are way too dysfunctional to have a team to believe in.

Re: Osuna
Wasn't it the 'stros that made a big deal about having a zero tolerance policy ? I have to respect Verlander and McCullers here and I can't see how this is going to help team chemistry.

I'm having a hard time understanding how Osuna could be re-instated before the trial is completed. The 75 game suspension was just an administrative leave, pending the outcome of the trial. MLB cannot finish investigating the evidence before the trial is over. It's also extremely difficult to be able to enter the US with pending felony assault charges.

For part B, the charges are in Canada. If you recall, we had an infielder we traded the Rockies for who was facing assault charges in (VZ ?) for beating up a car wash employee. Video and all, he was here.

The guy should be banned from the sport and probably even from the US entirely. I'd love to see his suspension get extended now more than ever. Horrible look for Houston.

@jonmorosi Brad Ziegler trade is indeed "close," source says, and he is not expected to go to the #Cubs. @mlb @mlbnetwork

I'd love to get Will Smith, he's been locked and loaded this year. Definitely the addition needed for the pen.

Grant Brisbee put it pretty well I think: Apparently "zero tolerance" means "whatever it's fine just don't do it again".

Consistently performed at a good level as one of the youngest prospects in his league. High price to pay for a guy with a career OPS+ of 83.
