He got hurt the last time he ran the bases, didn't he? Really, not getting hurt is the best possible scenario when it comes to AL pitchers hitting. I don't care about anything else than that. Except for that one time Beckett hit a home run for us. Didn't Porcello win the game vs Scherzer with his double earlier this year? Yes he did and against his buddy and CY candidate no less.

At this point in the season, I'm still taking no injuries over all else. They aren't in desperate need of wins. I think they'll be able to win a game or two without their pitchers hitting home runs anyway.

What a wild game. I had to look up who Dario Veras (first guy out of the Sox pen) was, as I'd completely forgotten him, and that led me to the mystery of the Jim Leyritz trade, which I'd temporarily forgotten. They'd made a nice trade for Leyritz the previous winter and he was rocking a 129 wRC+ platooning at DH with Reggie Jefferson when they dealt him to the Padres in late June for two relievers they ended up releasing (Veras and Carlos Reyes) and a C for Pawtucket. It came as a shock and had to be motivated by off-the-field stuff.
They tried former Dodger backup OF Billy Ashley in Leyritz's role before making a very good deadline deal for Mike Stanley, who was great for us the rest of the year and the next. This was less than a year after they had traded Stanly to the Yankees for hot prospect Tony Armas, and you all should know where he went that winter. (They also got a pretty good setup guy, Jim Mecir, as the PTBNL in that deal, and he went to the Rays in the expansion draft.)
What a crazy game that is. Teeing off on Bob Howry who we then traded for a couple years later.

I left Red Sox country when I was 8 (Merrimack NH). I remember in 2nd grade, they played the radio broadcast of game 163 in 1978 over the school intercom. I moved to VT after that, where it was split between Yankees and Red Sox fans. My girlfriend told me stories about her family cabin on a lake in Maine. Whenever a big play happened, you could hear everyone screaming around the lake. Everyone listened to the games on the radio all summer long. That must have been pretty awesome. This is awesome. I was also an 8 year old in Merrimack NH in 1978. There were three elementary schools in that town. You obviously went to the cool one. Having a chuckle with my mom, wondering why she let me go a school that obviously hated me...

With Butler outrighted off the 40 man, the Sox have a readily 40 man spot available.
You still have to get through August, and maybe Herrera becomes available again, but that certainly opens up a opportunity for Lakins to get a spot.
Don't know if he'd get a lot of opportunities regardless, but it's interesting to think about.

I'll jump on the bandwagon... My first game at Fenway: www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BOS/BOS199107060.shtmlClemens was my idol. He got taken deep for back-to-back HRs, then threw at the next batter. I was only 5, but I remember it like it was yesterday. I was jumping up and down on my seat during the fracas.

Don't know if he'd get a lot of opportunities regardless, but it's interesting to think about. Just to expand on this, with Kinsler getting activated real soon, that means someone is getting sent down for the remaining time until rosters expand. The only options are Velazquez and Thornburg. You could DFA Pomeranz, but I don't see that happening with his first taste of success against Baltimore recently out of the bullpen. My money is on Thornburg getting sent down. He's been inconsistent enough to warrant getting sent down for just a little while until September. Velazquez eats innings and that holds value in the bullpen, especially when the rosters aren't expanded in August. Neither player would have a option burned regardless.

I love me some J.D. and all, but someone please tell these guys that Mookie Betts is the best hitter in baseball.

It's really hard to make a argument against JD Martinez being the best hitter in baseball. Mookie is clearly the best player in the game this year due to his overall game, but JD Martinez has done it for longer than Mookie. JD Martinez is for my money, the best hitter in baseball today. It's really close though.

Porcello is so polarizing to me. He is either really good or awful and not a ton of anything else in between, especially this year. There have been a handful of bad starts that has driven Porcello's ERA over 4 this year.
He is usually pretty good, but you never know when the bad Porcello will show up. This year it's been against the Blue Jays for the most part.

How the heck did Franco pick that ball out of the dirt? That had to have been a 105+ mph shot by Xander.

Because looking at his game logs he's basically had every time of start you can imagine this year. Feel like this is recency bias with the CG followed up by his poor game in Toronto. EDIT: Gotta love watching him hit either way.
