9/21-9/23 Red Sox @ Indians Series Thread

Probably still a shuttle year for him. Nunez and Holt will probably both be back next year. Both have one year of control left, unless for some odd reason, Nunez declines his player option. It wouldn't be that strange. He can probably get more than 2 mil somewhere. Maybe? He's had a really bad year both offensively and defensively. He might be able to, but I could easily see him stay.

2018 red sox, we even win games we're trying to lose!

This is the kind of game I like. I don't care if the Sox lose and they win. I'm even watching Kimbrel.

I'm not saying he won't. Just that it is hardly farfetched. Remembering as well that it might make more sense for him to seek a two year deal from somebody.

This game reminds me of that Braves game where we got the sweep playing an absolutely terrible line-up. There's no terrible line-up in this team.
Witnessing Sandy the DH still is my goal in life.

You're not wrong, I doubt there could be a two year deal out there this offseason though. That's very iffy right now.

I have the feeling he did DH once this year. Kimbrel over the last three weeks looking really good. Cora has to easily be manager of the year. So calm and committed to resting players and working through slumps. Using his roster.

I love Cora "going for the throat" when he smelled blood, by subbing JBJ in RF, after laying down most of the game. Also cool that he left Lin in CF as a sort of tip of the hat for the HR.

Also cool that he left Lin in CF as a sort of tip of the hat for the HR. I don't think it has to do with the HR he hit. He played him in CF vs the Mets too when Mookie came out. He played only CF in the minors. Most likely he left him there because of his inexperience with playing COF.

Thought Pomeranz arm looked alive for the first time all year. If he throws like that a few more times he’d be my last pen arm, as crazy as it sounds

You guys are awesome, but there should be no more excuses Drew is terribad. He has been given every chance to succeed and failed, I mean he lost twice to BAL. He was a terrible acquisition but only second to the Thornburg trade because of who we gave away. He should not be in the PO roster or signed after this year. I agree Pomeranz should have zero shot for being on the playoff roster but he was not a terrible acquisition. Last year Sox don't make the playoffs without him. The year before he had a strong run of 7 games from Aug 4th to Sept 5th which helped the team incredibly. At that time the bullpen was in big, big trouble. But what stinks here is seeing Donaldson on the Indians. I think it's a disgrace he's allowed to play for the Indians in the playoffs.

The Sox should run him out at least every other day the rest of the year to see if he can get his act together. The situation the Sox are in make an ideal opportunity to experiment and test.

What we need to do is call up two guys who are not outfielders and start them tomorrow, so they can each homer.
Seriously, if you predicted before the season that the Sox would start an OF of Travis, Lin, and Swihart in this game, you'd have to put it in italics. If you wanted to also suggest that Travis and Lin would each hit their first MLB homers and that they would provide the margin of victory, you'd have to try to invent a new font. If you were to add that Robby Scott would enter with a 13.50 ERA and post a game-high .386 WPA -- well, you'd use the same font, but it would be a longer sentence.
I find this very interesting:
August 28 to September 11, 9 games, 8.78 RS/G, 13.00 RS/9 from the 7th inning onward. 66% of their runs scored from the 7th onward.
September 12 to 19, 7 games, 2.43 RS/G, 1.56 RS/9 from the 7th onward. 18% of their runs scored from the 7th onward. (That the team went 4-3 is emblematic of a big part of the story.)
Last two games, 9.00 RS/G, 16.50 RS/9 from the 7th onward. 61% of their runs scored from the 7th onward.
The offense took a week off* and when it came back to life, it picked up exactly where it left off.
*Except for Holt, who in his last 25 PA over 10 G is .455 / .520 / .864, including 2/3, 2B, HR, BB as a a PH. Holt this year has pinch-hit 15 times and is .385 / .467 / 1.164.

I might have missed something but has Thornburg been shutdown for the season? He hasn’t pitched in a week with plenty of opportunities to put him in

OK, to put this season so far in context:
The Red Sox have won 100+ regular season games 4 times in their history. They are:
1912: 105 - 47 1915: 101 - 50 1946: 104 - 50 2018: 105 - 49 (thus far)
So, raw record-wise, this counts as the second most successful season in Sox history, behind only 1912. This win vaults us a game over the 1946 pace at the same point, and the 1915 club lost 50 without having a chance to get past 101 wins, so in a way, what we do in the last week of the season is irrelevant to a comparison with those years, especially since it's a "throwaway week."
Now I can die happy (Sox-wise -- I still have other things to accomplish in life).

Win percentage each year: 1912 .690 1915 .669 1946 .675 2018 .681 Good info. Thanks. Since i am old enough to have been around for 1946, but not the century old seasons, this 2018 Red Sox team is the statistically best in my lifetime of great Red Sox teams. Although I remain partial towards Ted Williams’ era, and several great teams since 1967 through 2013, this team has become my favorite and the most exciting to watch every day. This homegrown Killer B’s baseball core, including Barnes, Blake, Brasier and Brockstar, is amazing. Even losses like Beeks and Buttrey brought us exciting reinforcements of Eovaldi, Kinsler and Pearce. And look what would be “B’s” Devers, Lin and Travis did last nite. Who knew? We are privileged to be able to enjoy this unpredictable, record breaking team. It could, but may not happen again in the lifetimes of even the youngest people on this board. Just enjoy it.

How could you possibly leave out Benny, Bogaerts, and Betts, the king bees?!

I have the feeling he did DH once this year. I think he did too, but that was still good Sandy and not automatic out Sandy. Current day Leon as a DH would just be messing with the other team's mind.

Hah. I alluded to Beni, Betts, Bogaerts, Bradley, just didn’t want to belabor the obvious. They are the core. I merely tried to hitch Barnes, Braisier, Brockstar, Devers, Lin, etc, to the excitement and success generated by this young, homegrown core. C, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF, 3-4 on the bench, 4-SP and 3-5-RP are homegrown. This is a special team in so many ways. Edit: Ooops. Response to ianr.

Would have been hard to believe a few months ago but Swihart is going to end up with 200 at-bats this season

Porcello...not the way we want to see him in this last stretch of the season ...missing a lot of spots in hittable zones and he always seems to pay for it.
