2019-2020 Red Sox Offseason
|

Off topic to which I greatly apologize. My grandson is an unbelievable Sox fan. I would like to get him a DVD covering the Sox season, playoffs and World Series. Does anyone know whether such exists? Thank you! I was thinking the same exact thing! I actually e-mailed NESN to ask them if they plan on putting out a DVD that commemorates the greatest Red Sox team in history. It's been 2 days and I've not received a reply and I don't expect to. The World Series DVD didn't cover the regular season or the post-season prior to the World Series. I was hoping NESN would put out a DVD just like they did in 2004 (Faith Rewarded), just like they did in 2007 (Champions Again), just like they did in 2013 (Band of Bearded Brothers). Nothing. In 2013 the announcement for Band of Bearded Brothers came out around Thanksgiving. There's been nothing so far so I'm assuming they're not putting anything out which to me is utterly ridiculous. NESN covers the Red Sox for the most part and this 2018 team that came along is a once in a lifetime team and will most likely go down as the greatest Red Sox team in our lifetime and they are among the all-time great teams in the sport. How they don't commemorate that is beyond me! So yeah, I'm kind of livid about that! Thanks guy for your input. I had scoured Amazon, eBay yada, yada without finding exactly what I was looking for as a commemorative. This was too great and historic season not to have a comprehensive recap. The Collectors Edition is basically pitch by pitch of the World Series games plus concluding games of Yankees and Houston series. Good stuff no doubt but incomplete. ...not sure I'd want to watch the 18 inning game again in totality either. Merry Christmas.

The Collectors Edition is basically pitch by pitch of the World Series games plus concluding games of Yankees and Houston series. Good stuff no doubt but incomplete. ...not sure I'd want to watch the 18 inning game again in totality either. Merry Christmas. I purchased the Collectors Edition and it's on its way and I was able to get the other five victories on separate DVDs from a private source so I will have all 11 victories that the Sox got. In year's past the World Series and NESN DVDs kind of overlapped each other (same interviews being used, etc), but this year it wouldn't have been the case. Other than showing the win wall at the start of the World Series DVD, nothing is mentioned regarding the regular season and very little is shown re: the playoffs, just some two out clutch hits against Houston. There was nothing about the Yankees or who actually played on this historic 2018 team. It would have been perfect for NESN to do a real documentary on this historic team, the team that's kind of the only reason (ok, sorry Bruins - fans do watch for hockey, but ....Liverpool) anybody cares about NESN, yet nothing. I plan on sending off another e-mail if I don't hear from them soon, but I have no expectations at this point that I'll hear back which is a damn shame. With the way the World Series DVD was done this year (99% of it was World Series content except for some brief things on the bonus features) there would have been plenty of room for NESN to do a video that didn't overlap the World Series and really tell the story of the team, how it was a team greater than the sum of its parts, how it had awesome superstars. but also had a surprisingly good supporting cast who stepped up their games big-time in the post-season when the games counted the most, or how the Sox had this rookie manager who was impactful on the way he used data and his relationships with players to make the team play as well as they possibly could. They could have talked about the Joe Kelly fight club, the amazing 4 game torture chamber they put the Yankees through in August to knock them out of the race, the clincher, the exciting ALDS and ALCS, all of this amazing comebacks, their great defensive plays. I'd have loved to see that moment against Joe Mauer where Betts makes what looks like a routine catch, but is actually in a different position than he normally would have played because of the defensive positioning sheets he kept in his pocket. I thought it was awesome when he took it out of his back pocket, smiled, and waved it at the little guys who do that kind of work - a special buy-in moment for what Cora was selling - a show of total organizational unity. It really could have been special. My God, there were VHS tapes put out to commemorate the 1986 Red Sox team, the 89 win 1988 Red Sox team (Morgan's Magic), the 88 win 1990 Red Sox team (Beating the Odds), and the Wild Card 2003 Red Sox team (Cowboy Up), not to mention the 1967 Impossible Dream Team - and at least that team also had a record put out, as did the 1975 pennant winning team. But for 2018, nothing? This 2018 team was way more amazing than all of those teams. We'll most likely never see a Red Sox team ever as good as the 2018 Red Sox were. It's virtually impossible. NESN has totally dropped the ball on this. Maybe if others complained, perhaps they'd give us something worthwhile?

I still have my Super Sox '75 CD (I originally this on vinyl and got the cd a few years back. Still gives me chills. That was MY coming of age Red Sox team (and by coming of age, I mean 6). I can still remember, vaguely, driving back from a Maranacook or Leavitt football game in early Oct 1975 (my dad was a football official for 30+ years in central Maine) with several other of the officials listening to Luis Tiante pitch in Game 1.
I still like to watch 4 Days in October on occasion.
With the media today, they should be able to make a season recap easily and cheaply. Maybe the demand isn't there anymore?

I would find it really sad if the demand is not there. Hard to believe that considering that Fenway sells out and Sox fans seemingly travel everywhere. If that's the case I would hope somebody from NESN would tell me. I would find it really sad if the demand is not there. Hard to believe that considering that Fenway sells out and Sox fans seemingly travel everywhere. That Super Sox '75 CD hold a lot of meaning for me personally. I remember when I was about 13, my father had the 1975 Super Sox record. I loved listening to it and I decided that one day I would tape record the record onto a cassette tape, but the problem was that in doing so it could pick up any sound in the background. Beyond loving the tandem of Ned Martin and Jim Woods (and Curt Gowdy in the World Series), the tape I made wound up having sentimental value for me. At first I was annoyed when my beloved dog started barking during the taping. I considered re-taping, but didn't get to it. A month later she passed away and I was so thankful to have her voice preserved on tape, so when I hear "There's a ball hooking away from (Bobby) Bonds - fair ball, It bounces into the seats. Carbo scores, 3-2 Boston" toward the beginning and I can hear my dog's barking voice, it's special for me, even 33 years later as I still have the cassette tape and it plays beautifully.

Do they still make the dvd sets with all of the playoff games? I have the 2004 set. Obviously I always start on game 4 of the ALCS. It's hard to believe how far television has come even since 2004. They aren't even widescreen.

They aren't even widescreen. They make the collector's edition but not with all of the playoff games. I don't recall if the Sox/Angels ALDS games from 2004 were on the DVDs but I know all of the Yankees ALCS games were there. In 2007, it was Games 5, 6, and 7 of the ALCS and the World Series. No ALDS games and no Game 1 victory against Cleveland (10-3 where Ortiz and Ramirez were 10-10 in getting on-base). In 2013, it was only Game 6 of the ALCS and the World Series. No ALDS and no other ALCS games, so no Ortiz grand slam in Game 2. This year, it's clinching Game 4 of the ALDS against NYY, clinching Game 5 of the ALCS against Houston, and the World Series, so that makes 5 post-season victories unaccounted for. I have been able to get the DVDs of the games elsewhere. If anybody knows where I can download the radio broadcast of Game 5 of the 2018 World Series or Game 6 of the 2013 World Series, please let me know.

Did anyone else buy the 2013 WS on Blue Ray that was unplayable? I never was able to get out of the main menu on mine. I would love to get a copy that worked of that series.

To me, this is the most interesting part about how the Red Sox view whether they want to extend Xander or not.

Then there's this though. He and Sale seem like they're most willing to stay. They absolutely love Boston.

The problem with extensions is that I'm sure that both Sale and Xander would be willing as long as they were paid in 2016 free agency terms, while the Red Sox would be dumb to pay that much.

Or maybe they’ve watched the last 2 offseason and feel that free agency isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and as long as they are paid well they want to be happy too. That being said I’m not a fan of a Xander extension... spending 20+ on him isn’t worthwhile....

I'll also be very surprised if he's playing somewhere else next season.

How long do we think he can stay as an effective short stop? Until he has to move to the outfield, where his bat will still play. The Sox might have to sit down and talk to Xander and ask him if he's willing to move off of short stop though. Cora is obviously defending Xander if he knows that Xander doesn't have a lot of range already. If Xander is willing to move off of short stop by the age of 30 or something like that then they should offer him the money, if Xander raises a fuss about it before he signs saying "I only want to be a short stop in my career." That's when things get tricky. He only moved off of short stop his first 1 and a half years in the majors for the veteran in Stephen Drew. Now he is the veteran and holds the cards sort of speak.

To be fair if he's still a 130 wRC+ hitter, he could hit anywhere and be awesome to almost any position. I don't think Xander is getting overpaid at like 28 million a year either.

I don't view that as a problem at all. That's top 10 for all MLB outfielders last season. Hell, that's almost like Bryce Harper.

So if you pay him like a shortstop, but he moves to left field, you’ve got a bad contract. Joe Mauer at catcher in 2017 with a 116 wRC+ in 140 games would be an incredibly valuable player. Mauer in 2017 at first with that wRC+ was still a 2 WAR player, so that was fine. The problem was that he was paid 23 million dollars for that production. That was a problem.

Bogaerts has had a wRC+ above 130 once in his career. I mean shouldn't we assume when his D goes, his bat wouldn't be wRC+ 130. Isn't that the issue? His above average SS bat at 20 million, becomes a below average OF bat with bad D. Right isn't that the issue? If he's going to have a wRC+ of 130 or better you don't have any worries about his D. He wouldn't be a bad DH with those numbers.

We all know the ability is there he’s up and down and any small injury seems to affect him a great deal.

This is more of a nitpick but in 2017 Mauer's salary was basically fine, probably a slight overpay but nothing disastrous even for the Twins. The real problem was that 2017 was the best year of the last five years of his career.

For all the reasons stated above, right now I would seriously prioritize resigning JD above Xander, and maybe even Sale.
IMO JD’s bat will age well enough. More importantly, his knowledge and preparation have a ripple effect on the rest of the lineup. I don’t think it’s entirely a coincidence that Mookie had his two best years with a veteran mentor behind him in the lineup (and that, in the absence of a mentor-type, he was less consistent and confident about sticking with his approach).
