So - this season we will have Hembrees (for pen breakdowns) and Nunezes (for dumb errors) and even a few Morelands (for being offensive buzzkills)

What we witnessed last year with so many players was surreal. Kelly always had the talent...being able to harness it and put it together in big moments was a delight, and yes, a bit of a surprise.

Lets face it 2013 and 2018 were magical years where a whole lotta stuff went right. As for this year I still like the team but I am non believer in the bullpen at this point. Way too early reach any conclusions on Sale though as I said earlier the contract took me by surprise.

I hope we lose 26-4 at this point. Let's get totally embarrassed and maybe it will be a wake up call.

And another thing, they made the right call on Kimbrel as far as I am concerned, and I consider myself a big fan of his.

Guess we can't put in Mars, and Sturgeon, and De La Guerra and all of the other subs we've been seeing lots of the last few weeks? (ha ha)

Nice inning by Johnson. Gotta recognize it when we actually get a decent performance tonight!

Well- good things: Bennie with 2 RBI, 3 hits by Mookie and 2 by JD, good inning by Johnson.
and that is that. Game 1 in the books - a loss, just like last year.
Let the winning streak begin tomorrow night!

Reminder of last year's opener
Sale throws 6 innings of 1 hit, shut out ball Joe Kelly gives up 4 runs in 1/3 inning, Carson Smith 2 runs in 2/3 inning the melt down was in the bottom of the 8th
the hitting stars were Xander, Devers and Nunez Mookie, Benny, Hanley, JDM and JBJ went a combined 1-18
Then we went out and got hot and had the best season in Red Sox history.
So there is that!

ok. So that game was ugly. It was only 1 game so....?
But the two things that were most striking were that the Red Sox got blown out of the tank tonight. Last year when the Red Sox lost they were usually in the game or within striking distance. Except for a few pounding by the Yankees and that lost weekend series against the Rays where they got their butts kicked last season it was really hard to blow them out.
Today they had a 2-0 lead but didn't really capitalize and then the roof caved in on Sale. I guess that's the other thing. He had no command. I don't care that he wasn't throwing 99 - kind of glad he wasn't, but I know one thing. He'll have a helluva time getting back to that 2.11 ERA he carried last year. I think that will be tough to match when you give up 7 runs in 3 innings. Don't know if he had an outing as bad last year. I expected some struggles without him using his plus fastball, but not like that. The command was so off.
And the bullpen was the bullpen. Thornburg looks cooked and Velazquez doesn't look like much more than a mopup man.
I don't worry as much about Nunez butchering 2b. The man just isn't a 2b. When Pedroia comes back, hopefully he'll be healthy enough to be at least the short half of a Brock Holt/Pedroia platoon. Hopefully he'll be healthier than that and relegate Holt to utility guy, but either way hopefully we don't see Nunez at 2b too often.
Well, at least the game was entertaining for about 3 inning - and the Sox looked unbeatable after the top of the 2nd inning.

Well that didn't go as planned. Still early. Sale had only pitched 9 innings since the start of ST, building up arm strength still (I hope). Season openers are usually indicative of nothing. It's out of the way, roll on game #2.

Though having to watch it on ESPN made a game devoid of almost all enjoyment that much less enjoyable.

They won 108 games lady year and then went 11-3 in the postseason en route to a title. That team was the real deal.
