4/22-4/25 Red Sox vs. Tigers Series Thread

One thing I would like to understand better is what teams' (and the Red Sox' in particular) calculations are when it comes to putting together a bullpen. It seemed like a few years ago the idea emerged that bullpens were an undervalued portion of the roster, especially for the playoffs. (Remember that Royals bullpen?) But at the same time it seems super hard to predict which bullpen guys are going to, you know, actually be good. On the face of it, given these two ideas, you'd think the best approach would be quantity over quality - grab a bunch of guys at low cost with options and hope a few of them over-perform. And also: don't pay a lot for relievers unless you're dead certain they'll maintain a high level of performance. Would this describe the Sox' approach to building the 2019 bullpen?

On a fresh topic, two related roster notes --
-- It's too bad there's no AAAA guy actually pitching well enough at Pawtucket to be the mop-up guy, because it would be a good idea to send Thornburg down to get regular work. But he may go down when Eovalidi comes off the DL, depending on how well Poyner does.
-- If at some point everyone currently on the IL were healthy and no one else had gone it, they would have to option Brewer. The alternative would be to trade Hembree, but you'd only do that if you had a lot of depth in the minors behind Brewer as the 5th and last short guy in the pen. And that depth would start with Thornburg.
Thornburg is out of options. Are you assuming he'd clear waivers?

Tonight's game rained out. Doubleheader tomorrow. Velazquez in game 2.
Guerin on the other Cora news since she put it in one tweet.

Do we still get to add a player to the roster for the double header tomorrow? Lakins?

With the lefty on the mound, this was tonight's announced lineup:
Benintendi LF, Betts CF, Martinez RF, Bogaerts SS, Pearce 1B, Chavis 3B, Vázquez DH, Lin 2B, León C, Sale LHP.
I doubt we'll see Vazquez at DH in the doubleheader.

Do we still get to add a player to the roster for the double header tomorrow? Lakins? "If the postponed or suspended game was from the previous day, a "26th player" can be temporarily added to a club's MLB Active List for the second game only. " Looks like game 2 gets a 26th man

Thornburg is out of options. Are you assuming he'd clear waivers? I hadn't realized that his 8 MLB games in 2012 came mid-season instead of the end, so you're right. They could phantom IL him and send him down to rehab, or they could outright him. I don't think anyone claims him given his $1.75M salary.

I'm not going through this crap again. Good luck finding relief pitchers using years of BABIP data, when they become elite and fall apart all the time from season to season. Even then, they only get about 60-70 innings a year anyway which is about 1/3rd of a starter's season and still not enough to judge performance because the sample is too small. Relief pitchers REQUIRE you to evaluate them in tiny sample sizes. How the hell are you going to figure out if a pitcher who has a 0.00 ERA over 12 innings might have become a good pitcher without xwOBA?I’m partial to pitch type splits, myself. But you’re never going to know much from a 12 inning sample not matter what you’re looking at.

Do we still get to add a player to the roster for the double header tomorrow? Lakins? Wouldn't surprise me if Erasmo Ramirez gets added again. The Sox can probably use a guy who can go multiple innings. It could be Lakins though for a day.

FYI: www.soxprospects.com/40man.htm40-man roster is good resource for Options remaining. See column on right. Reminder that players with 5 years mlb service cannot be optioned. such as Holt, Bradley (attained 5 this month). players with 5 years mlb service cannot be outrighted involuntarily, i.e. Thornburg.

Thanks DFA. I never know a great place to find that info and I don't bother asking because I assume the mods have had to answer that question a dozen times already.

The Sox can probably use a guy who can go multiple innings. It could be Lakins though for a day. With Christin Stewart on the IL, Tigers have 10 RHB and two switch-hitters, one of whom, Jeimer Candelario, struggles from the left side. Lakins has been dominating RHB this year, and can go two IP.
If, OTOH, a player who has just cleared waivers doesn't need to spend another 48 hours in limbo, re-selecting and re-outrighting Ramirez might make more sense, for the reason you give.
OTTH, everyone in the pen has gotten a day off, and Velazquez went from 39 to 57 pitches on his last start, and Sale can be counted on for at least 6 IP. If they go the Lakins route and they still over-use the pen, they could option Poyner and select Ramirez for Wednesday.

Lakins did just go 2 innings yesterday in Pawtucket, so I don't think he'd be available for more than a inning on Monday. It'll be interesting to see who they pick. Add- They could also select Mejia from Pawtucket too if they don't want Lakins up yet or don't like the idea of Erasmo Ramirez.

Or if it is Darwinzon does he stick with Eovaldi being out 4 to 6 weeks. This could be an audition.

With Johnson on the shelf, I suppose that's possible.

As James mentioned, the Tigers are the worst lineup in baseball. This was a safe spot to put Hernandez in. The Sox most likely just need innings from him tomorrow night after Velazquez goes his 4 innings. Even if Hernandez shoves in this game and throws 4 innings with 7 strikeouts, 2 hits, and 1 walk, he's still going back to AA after. This is just filling innings for the time being and maybe just a look to see where he's at and if he handles the pressure well. There shouldn't be much pressure hopefully and there isn't a better spot to put him in with his first MLB appearance.

The Sox really miss Johnson and Wright. I wasn’t counting on Evoladi for the whole season. I rather get him towards the end of the season. I am rooting hard for Swihart. I also hope the Sox put there foot down on Petey. I listened to weei last week do you know he admitted in the offseason he had a floor replaced in his house because it hurt his knee too much. So this guy is gonna play 120 games. Give me a break. He is costing the team a spot on the roster and again Nunez at 2nd base. What a poor job of maintaining a roster. To me Petey days are numbered. Not to mention we lose Swihart and a day later this crap with Petey happens. Here comes Leon to save the day.
Also Thornberg days are numbered. I am not too sure of Hembree either. Wright aggravates me. We’ll see what happens.
I am also a little disappointed in Cora. I hope he adjusts.

. I am also a little disappointed in Cora. I hope he adjusts. I think the lesson is just like players can have bad years, so can coaches and GMs. Same think with DDo so far, same thing with Brad and Danny on the Celtics (regular season).

There shouldn't be much pressure hopefully and there isn't a better spot to put him in with his first MLB appearance. He's allowed a .481 OBP to AA RHB (28 PA). The Tigers will start 7 RHB and 2 switch-hitters.
I wonder if they can bring both him and Lakins to Boston and make the decision after game 1? Lakins (.200 / .200 / .400 in 21 PA vs. RHB this year) would be infinitely more useful for winning game 2, while Hernandez would be a much better choice to save the bullpen if it's used heavily in game 1 (which seems unlikely).
No reason Velazquez can't pitch into the 5th in game 2 if he's good, and he may be able to go the full 5.

... 2. My two adjustments try to do what jimed says they need to do to improve xwOBA. Figuring out the degree to which pitchers control the horizontal launch angle -- the direction to which balls are hit -- is a terrific challenge. And that's just the ability to get folks to hit fly balls to center rather than down the lines. If we're trying to figure out whether they have the ability to get hitters to hit into a shift rather than go the other way, that's tougher. ... Launch angle is a function of the pitch type, so that's equivalent to determining how often a pitcher is able to get a hitter to go after a certain pitch. We're talking sequencing and deception here, as well as pitch consistency - how well does a pitcher deliver the same pitch to the same location. That's exceedingly difficult and will involve a lot of probabilistic elements.
