So, Chavis is cemented on this team. He has arrived. What an incredible start....if Pedey comes back, Holt comes back, Pearce and Nunez have to be on the bubble (though in reality, Pedey's return to me seems pretty iffy).

Look at these eerie stats for Benintendi. Talk about consistency. Except with 11.1 fWAR in 2600+ career PA, he’s worth 2.8 WAR/650 PA, or an above-average regular, meaning first-division starter. Which is exactly what he has been. Making up your own definition of “truth” (i.e, an opinion that is easily refuted by available evidence) doesn’t make it a viable concept. Has been, not what he is. Or is it? Yeah, he’s never had a stretch where he’s hit this poorly. Where on earth did all that production that made him an above-average regular come from? Two more months, and you’d have an argument. Right now you’re just trolling. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one bored with it. Have at it, though. I’ll get interested when you have a cogent, compelling, data-driven argument and not a perseverative hot take. 😴

Walden reminds of another Sox pitcher from years back who wore glasses. Anybody else know who I'm thinking of? Harris? Can't remember his name You're thinking of ambidextrous reliever Greg Harris who was a really good setup man who actually was a starting pitcher for them in 1990 and did a good job when John Dopson got injured.

My family always referred to him as Harris Harris, cause we used to gi to Mets spring training every year, and when he was in their farm system, their roster had a typo listing him that way. Those were the days...

Complete list of MLB games with SO% of 70.0% or higher, minimum 9 strikeouts.
Chris Sale, 8/12/18, 5 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 12 SO, 75.0%.
Chris Sale, 5/14/19, 7 IP, 3 H, 0 BB, 17 SO, 70.8%.
Sale also stands alone with 17 K in a 7 IP start. The most impressive of the 16 K 7 IP starts was Randy Johnson fanning 16 of 23.
Nice to see him having that degree of success sitting 92-94. Just goes to show how important mix and movement are. Velo gives a pitcher some breathing room, but if you command plus stuff, you’re gonna be good. Cliff Lee never had incredible stuff (the CH was awful good I guess), but sitting 90-93 on the black every time tends to give hitters fits. Plus, that 95 avg mph start vs NY tells me Sale’s just sitting well below max velo. So I’d imagine he’ll still be capable of both reaching back for 98-99, and ramping up the sitting velo as the year goes on. Great long-term news for the Sox: looks like the injury was minor, looks like he can still pitch to ace levels even with lower velocity (and thus into decline), they have him locked up at what seems more likely to be a below-market deal, and not for excessively long, and it looks like they’ve found a way to keep him viable come Sept-Oct.

Walden reminds of another Sox pitcher from years back who wore glasses. Anybody else know who I'm thinking of? Harris? Can't remember his name You are thinking of Greg Harris, who was ambidextrous and who was both a starter and a RP for the Sox, 1989-1993,and who pitched in 80 games for the Sox in 1993. He wanted to pitch with both arms in a game but, as I recall, the Sox would not let him do it. One of the two last teams he pitched for, the MFYs or Montreal - probably Montreal - let him do it. I don't recall the results.

I don't recall the results. You're correct. Lou Gorman didn't want him switch-pitching, didn't think highly of him as a lefty, but it was with Montreal where he was able to do it in a game. I believe he faced two batters as a lefty and fielded a comebacker to the mound and walked the other guy he faced. He was a very useful pitcher for the Sox. The Red Sox got him for nothing. I couldn't figure out why Philly released him in 1989 and I was hoping the Sox would sign him and they did and he pitched out of the pen in 89. And then when Dopson got hurt he replaced him in the rotation and did a great job until September 1990 when he ran out of gas. Then in 1991 he stepped into the main setup role when Jeff Gray had a career ending stroke (he looked like he was about to establish himself as the prime setup guy - he was looking like a mainstay in the pen). Harris did a great job as a setup man for three years before he suddenly lost it in 1994. He did pitch well with the Expos though for a season.

Since he found it in the 5th inning on April 28th, Sale has allowed a .171 xwOBA over 24 IP.
To put that in perspective, the best non-Sale starts of the season were Eovaldi's .171 on April 17 against the Yankees, and David Price's .172 against the O's on April 14.
We've lost two of the three best starts of the season, and if it weren't for JBJ, it would be three out of four.

Now THAT was a better ending than yesterday. Bogaerts with the big double and Chavis with the killer hit. Phew. That was a game they HAD to win. I knew the final score when I resumed watching the game in the 8th, and after the top of that inning it was really fun watching, while knowing that either Walden would go to 6-0, or they'd win on a walk-off. Or both!
Really eager to get the Stacast metrics on this game, especially Devers' non-HR.

Because those two things are entirely the same. Let's hope they teach him to catch and pitch while they're at it! He's athletic, can run & throw. He'd make an excellent outfielder So, let's just assume that being athletic, able to run, and able to throw are the only qualifications there are for being an outfielder. They're absolutely not the only qualifications, but let's play the game and make those bad assumptions. Chavis.... isn't that athletic? I mean, he's a professional athlete so he's obviously athletic but it's mostly in ways that relate to his hitting ability. He's not very explosive or twitchy and he doesn't strike me as particularly fast. His best defensive attribute is his arm but if you all of a sudden just decided to stick him at an outfield spot there's almost no way he becomes a more valuable defender. And whoever is likely to replace him is probably not going to add enough value as a hitter to counteract the loss of defensive value (and, if we're really getting into the weeds, the small probable loss of offense from Chavis that comes from having to focus on learning a new position).
