Of all the surprising things about this season, Chris Sale being 1-7 (soon to be 2-7) in June is right at the top.

All of the sudden Sale has an ERA in the 3’s remarkable after his start to the year He's as good as any pitcher in MLB right now. This is what we want and need in October.

Of all the surprising things about this season, Chris Sale being 1-7 (soon to be 2-7) in June is right at the top. Nice to see him really varying the velo on his FBs though, particularly when he’s reaching back for 97.7 on his 92nd pitch. Lots of late 95+. If he can flip his usual script, and this start resembles his usual finish...with his finish resembling his usual start...well, we’ll all forget about that 1-7 start pretty quickly.

I don think Raffy had an RBI his first 10 games, now at 38. BTW got to beat the tomato cans when you get the chance. Last years team made mince meat of the weak sisters, and just about every NL team they faced.

6.5 behind the MFY and heating up! They're also only 3.5 back by pythag. This not a hopeless season by any means.

Nice win but damn it seems like forever since Mookie has been great. He had a frankly poor postseason and has been only above average through the first third of this season. That is a long time. Has there been any thought as to what is going on? I keep thinking tomorrow but tomorrow hasn't come.

A 102-pitch ShO is a rare and beautiful thing these days. The most encouraging thing for me re: Sale is that he is very obviously sitting well below his max velocity. If he’s reaching back for 97.7, my guess is the velo drop this year is more indicative of a reduced working velocity than any sort of “typical” velo loss; he’s done this before with Chicago (worked 92-93), and that he’s having some success doing it makes me hopeful that he genuinely is ramping up for a late-season run.
Also, Rafi is really just about to become a beast, I think. I can see him contending for a batting title, maybe even chasing a TC, in the next several years. He’s better this year in basically every facet of his game. I still think he becomes an above-average defender at 3b, too. He just seems to really be chasing greatness, constantly taking steps forward.
I’m still concerned overall about this team; the performances of Mookie, Beni, JDM, Sale, Rodriguez, Porcello, Chavis’s (fairly predictable) fall to earth...it’s all pointing to 88-90 wins, and a real risk of finishing out of the dance. But if some of these guys...like JBJ getting hot, Sale tonight, Rodriguez the other day...up their game, it’s a whole different story. It’s what makes this team both compelling and frustrating. There’s HUGE talent. An extended groove, and these guys will put up stupid W%s. Like Houston last year, I could certainly see an incredible second half that has them close to or even over 100 wins. If (when) they click, they’ll be nasty.

He’s not going to win MVP but I think people are going a bit overboard criticizing him. Last year was a best case scenario for Mookie. He isn’t going to put up 10 WAR seasons regularly like Trout. He’s still a phenomenal player.

Sale's Game Score tonight was an even 100, which also happens to be the highest of his career.
His previous high was 99, a 2 hit, 9K CGSO vs the Rays in 2016.
(All using Fangraphs's Game Score v2.0)

I think it is less criticism than surprise at his struggles - and he clearly is not happy (body language not great - less smiles) - we know what he is capable of...he is also really critical to the offense cycling around well (as is Benni) - my own view is that he will figure it out and be fine - not last year incredible performance level, but better than what we are seeing now (and saw in 2017). It is a testament to his excellence that a very good season could be viewed as a disappointment, because it falls below his incredibly high standards.

so Kimbrel goes to Cubs as unrestricted FA. Does that mean the Sox don't get a draft pick ? I don't know the rules very well, but they did give him the QO last offseason and so they should get a pick. Is that correct ? No. The QO draft pick is only if a team signed him before Monday, the Sox would have received a draft pick. Now - the Sox lose out on the pick. Yes but the Cubs lose out on $43 million dollars over three years. Meanwhile Joe Kelly 7.91.

I would rather spend the money elsewhere just like the Red Sox did.

When Mookie is going well he has the quickest hands in BB through the strike zone and seldom strikes out. Hopefully he rights the ship and stays a Red Sox.

The Royals resemble a AAA team. The Sox have to beat them up and that's what they did and best of all Sale's performance sets the Sox up for a sweep as the bullpen is well rested for tomorrow.
Sale looked spectacular. Immaculate inning again. Devers cranked the ball again and JBJ has discovered that it's ok to hit to the opposite field, even when you're not at Fenway.
Hope they sweep up and then continue on this weekend.

Holy shit has anyone ever had two immaculate innings in a year (or a month)? Per NESN's graphic, Lefty Grove did it in 1928, a bit more than a month apart. Sale did his a bit less than a month apart.
NESN's very lucky they didn't miss strike 1 live the way they missed Devers' play on Mondesi, and had his home run in a microscopic side box.

If (when) they click, they’ll be nasty. Can't say this looks like an 88-90 win team to me. They're 21-12 in their last 33 games. That's a 103-win pace over a full season. If they play at that level the rest of the way, they'll finish at 96-66. If they play at the level they played last season, they'll finish 99-63. That's pretty optimistic, but honestly, they had some pretty big weaknesses last season - C, 2B, 3B - and they've improved at all of them. The starting pitching now looks just as solid as it was last year. JBJ has hit his regularly scheduled turnaround. And if Mookie and Beni have underperformed, well, it's not hard to imagine those particular guys picking up the pace.

I would like to see him hit better than he has since the beginning of the playoffs last year and though this season to date. .300 with 25 HR would be nice.

Meanwhile, Chris Sale continues to make a HOF resume. Yeah, no regrets on that extension. Imagine if the Yankees had him right now? Yikes.
