The last Lowell team I can remember this exciting was the 2005 squad with Ellsbury, Lowrie, and Buchholz.

I see Kevin Steen is on the Lowell roster. Is he actually going to pitch?

Bazardo had the opening gem for Lowell last year was dealing again yesterday for Salem. He is trying to become the second player to move to Portland this year who started in Lowell last year. They might be motivated to push him being rule 5 eligible although that didn't stop them from protecting Reyes.
The DSL hitters have been duly noted. The pitcher that has caught my attention early is Moises Castellanos. The 17 year old has started with 7inn, 4h, 3bb and 12 k's

Man looking back at all those rosters, the 2016 Salem's is quite something.

Man looking back at all those rosters, the 2016 Salem's is quite something. Devers, Benintendi, Moncada, Longhi raking for Louisville now and Chavis just starting out with Kopech and Beeks on the mound. That has a good chance to be the best Sox minor league team for future major league WAR I would think.

And Beeks wasn't even on the radar at that point. Trey Ball, on the other hand, was still in the Top 20. And Wendell Rijo had been until the end up the 2015 season. Just a crazy roster.

Gold standard will probably always be the 2005 Sea Dogs though. Hanley, Pedroia, Moss, Lester, Papelbon, Anibal Sanchez, and to a lesser degree Delcarmen and Cla Meredith. 18 major leaguers.

Elio Prado with a HR, his 2nd of the season. He also picked up his 5th SB of the year. Lots of interesting stuff coming out of the DSL....should be an exciting Instructs with some of these guys coming over stateside.

I imagine they were drafted by both DDuquette and Theo?

If I remember, Hanley was the only one acquired by Duquette. Theo left in a dispute for a short time and missed one of the drafts. I think it was when Port was in charge and drafted Lester.

I'd probably do the legwork on this myself if I wasn't sneaking glances at this and the draft signings page at work, but is this power surge league-wide in the DSL or is it just a Red Sox specific occurrence? I don't think necessarily they're toying with the balls down there or anything but maybe there are other factors contributing to the power spike (if it's not just the Red Sox).

Lester was drafted in 2002 I believe. Theo was working in the organization. Can't remember if he was an assistant GM. Mike Port was the interim GM during that draft. Lester was drafted before Theo became GM in 2003. The blowup with Lucchino occurred on Halloween 2005. He resigned and then was back in January as GM, so he didn't miss any drafts.

Fangraphs leaderboard has Bryan Gonzalez leading the entire league with 5 HR, Albert Feliz is 2nd with 4 HR, three are tied with 3 HR and 27 guys have 2 HR (now including Elio Prado).

for what it's worth, milb.com just took murphy, steen, groshans, cannon, davis off the lowell roster while updating numbers.
they added jonathan diaz.

I believe that if you were to Google Earth "Boston Red Sox Baseball Academy D.R." you would be even more impressed with the power (remember we're talking high school aged kids here). or use this link: www.google.com/maps/place/Boston+Red+Sox+Baseball+Academy+D.R./@18.5120127,-69.7164496,382m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x8eaf819e16be5bd7:0xc804199be1e4699a!8m2!3d18.512051!4d-69.715739?hl=en-US

No idea why Steen was ever on there. The draftees thing is probably a new guy at the Spinners not understanding that the draftees weren't official yet. As I've said elsewhere, Diaz showed up when everyone else did, so that seems like an oversight.

Oh great, they created a Yasel Santana/Yusniel Padron hybrid and he's pitching tonight. Let's hope he has the best of both of their qualities.
