Oh look at you getting fancy with the piggyback notation. That's not that new. Been doing that for a 3-4 weeks, ever since Zeferjahn began starting and Zero Degrees Kelvin was piggybacking him.

PawSox are actually going with a bullpen game today. Makes sense given that they have at least 9 RP right now, 10 if they're going to use Velazquez in relief.

And isn't Eovaldi supposed to start his rehab assignment tonight? I was going to run with Eovaldi, but the Pawtucket recap from yesterday's game said Stankiewicz, which surprised me.

Stankiewicz ended coming on in the thrid, after Lakins and Eovaldi. Interesting that Lakins went first - wonder if they'd consider using him as an opener if/when the usual starting five aren't available (or as an opener for Cashner).
The Brainer Bonaci drought is over - finally stole #14, his first since 6/29.
EDIT: Thinking about it for five more minutes... more likely than Lakins being an opener by design is that they wanted Eovaldi to work out of the bullpen but also work early in the game which meant a scheduled short reliever had to pitch the first.

Eduardo Lopez is now 22 BBs to 23 Ks. When signed last year, I've read a lot about scouts and team officials marveling about his capacity to make adjustments and you can see it over the last few weeks.

Looks like Eovaldi struck out 3 in his inning of scoreless work today.

Looking at some player pages, and can't believe how old some of these prospects I'm so used to following are (Jhon Nunez being 24 the example that prompted me to write this). I guess it's easy to lose track when you're so familiar with them for a long period of time. I would love to have a bit on the next pod where Chris and Ian quiz each other on the ages of a few prospects and see if that's the case for guys who have been tracking the system way longer than I have.

If that pitch is so nasty why does he have a 22% K% and 10% swinging strike rate?

That's one of the strangest looking sliders I've ever seen, especially for such a low release point. Sale throws from that angle on the left and his slider moves completely differently. It almost looks more like the most absurd cutter you've ever seen.

If that pitch is so nasty why does he have a 22% K% and 10% swinging strike rate? Largely because as a starter he was working in his fastballs (both 2 and 4 seam) and changeup a lot more often. He can be more slider-heavy out of the bullpen. Also, his K rate was 27.0% against RHB, only 18.1% against lefties.

Watching the Lowell game on MiLB TV. Cannon got his first Lowell hit on a double that was a grounder down the third base line. Jimenez showed his speed, scoring from first-though he was running on the pitch. Marrero doubled on a nice swing that got over the right fielder’s head. Northcut just missed a home run: 395 feet to the center field wall that was caught by a leaping outfielder.

Could see either being the case, myself. Lakins as an opener has previously intrigued me.

FWIW Stankiewicz warmed on a starter's routine schedule--he was actually out there first. Lakins came out to throw in the outfield as Teddy was wrapping up. I think Lakins took a little longer to get ready than a reliever normally might--I could be wrong--but I did wonder if that could be part of an opener's role for him.

Cameron Cannon went off in the first Lowell game - 3 for 4 with a double, walk, and 5 RBI. Gilbertoooooo also with a 3 for 4. Kervin Suarez was 4 for 4 with two doubles. Decker was 1 for 2 with a walk and was pinch hit for. According to the team's twitter it was presumably to get some rest rather than due to an injury.
Cannon and Jimenez are not in the nightcap lineup so Suarez has the leg up for player of the day.
