Now that someone's brought this thread back to life, I wanna ask, is it just me that thinks Liu has a great chance to break out this year and at least reach Double A. Maybe I'm biased because I'm Taiwanese, but his stuff last year looked at least somewhat back to pre-signing levels Yeah I thought he looked better too. He might be like Dalbec in that he was a two-way player and may have been more raw than his age would indicate. I feel like two-way players and catchers should have age adjustments when comparing against others. But I have the Taiwanese bias as well lol. Also, a bit of tangent, does anyone else have experience playing youth baseball in Asia? I was 13 and they had me throw 270 pitches over 17 innings (4 games) in one day. For pitchers like Liu, I can only imagine the arm abuse/mileage and its impact once you go pro.

I lived in Taiwan 17/18 years, but ironically that one year in Boston was the only year I played baseball daily (I was 4th grade and was a pitcher in the North Cambridge Little League). I'm on the baseball team in my highschool but we're more like Division II, so our pitchers don't get overworked, but in Division I highschool/college there is a lot of pitcher overusage. It's a problem in Taiwan

Sorry to drag this thread back from obscurity, but at least I have an obscure question to do it with... If I were to address "Liu Chih-Jung" by his given/personal/non-family name, which name of his would that be? I understand some Asian cultures utilize the family name first, but I've seen it written both ways and I'm not sure which way is the first-name-first and which is the last-name-first. His given name would be “Chih-Jung” chee-jung. Liu is a super common last name in Taiwan as is Lin and Wang. Chien-Ming Wang pitched for the Yankees, but in Taiwan, he’s “Wang Chien-Ming” Correct me if I'm wrong but a rule of thumb I use for Chinese language names is that if there's a one-syllable name together with a two-syllable name (sometimes hyphenated), the one syllable name is typically the family name. Is that a useful rule?

Is that a useful rule? That’s a useful rule if it’s formatted well. One of the major differences between Taiwan and China is that almost all Taiwanese have three characters, e.g. 蔡英文 (Tsai Ing-Wen) while mainland Chinese often just have two names like 王立 (Wang Li). Tsai and Wang are the surnames. There are basically 50 common surnames or so and they typically come first, so usually the surname is the first name unless it’s anglicized.

It's a problem in Taiwan Yeah the other thing I noticed is that they didn’t really have strongly developed throwing programs like even Japan and focused on flat ground and mound work, not so much long toss and definitely not weight room exercises (which really leaves you behind the 8-ball for leg and core strengthening)

Independent of the other concerns (relative age, arm mileage) I really liked his stuff every time I watched. Velocity looked like it came fairly easily and signs of two legit secondaries. The change looks like it has above average potential, and the slider flashed average though it didn't always snap off. He overwhelmed some low A lineups too, though iirc he faced a really bad squad at least once.
