I don’t care how “special” the hit tool is. If you’re a HIGH SCHOOL second baseman, you’re not getting more than 2nd round money.

I think we are seeing the impact of not having a second round pick.

If they already know they can sign him at well-below slot, this may be brilliant. They may have been the only team (so far) to figure out the unique dynamics of this draft.
It gives them massive money to spend on round 3 to 5, where they can grab guys who are facing not being drafted at all, which is a terrible outcome. Think of this as their 3rd round pick, with the idea of getting as many as three 2nd-round talents tomorrow.

So offer $2.5 and save $1.1 for 3rd and 4th rounder?

The worst part is the long wait between picks which is why I did not like this strategy. They also left pretty good players on the table ugh this reminds me of Ryan Dent.

We are the Boston Red Sox with a top payroll and a ton of money invested in draft and development. In a 5 round draft and no 2nd round pick why would you take a 3rd round talent? Makes no sense. Tampa Bay never did anything this off the wall in their drafts... No one they can take rounds 3-5 will be as good as PCA or Mitchell. SMH

I’ll wait for rounds 3-5 before I react to this pick. I’m not gonna lie I was about to scream when I heard nick, thinking we took Bitsko instead I was like who??

Hate this plan. It’s a freakin 5 round draft. Why do they have to be more clever than everyone else? You are fortunate to get a couple MLB regulars from a given draft. They passed up 100 plus players generally considered better than this guy because they want to get tricky in the third round. Nice. I couldn't disagree with this more. His hit tool is special. It sucked that Abel and Howard were picked just previously..

Good luck to Chris and Ian with the first round reaction pod tonight...
Of all the years I’ve followed the draft on this site I can’t recall anything like it.

Love this pick. I was hoping to go all out on the final 3 with upside signs. Not to mention Yorke himself could be a steal. That swing is so damn pretty!

Mets get PCA and Bitsko was also available. Nothing against the player, however, this seems like Belichick was whispering in Bloom's ear that you can never have enough special teamers/second baseman. The move was unnecessarily risky, particularly with Bitsko and PCA there for the picking.

I for one am going to be rooting for Yorke. No better feeling in the world to see someone everyone wrote off make it. I would rather put my faith in our scouts and I want to see Yorke ripping doubles off the monster one day!

Could be something to be said for not putting all your eggs in one basket in a year that's probably as big a crap shoot as any in recent draft history.

Why? It's not like we have anything to be optimistic about right now in regards to baseball For starters, because it's against the our Forum Ground Rules regarding civil posting. Also, you just learned about this kid a few minutes ago. Exactly our point. This is all about Bloom. And I’d wage this kid could not care less about what any of us think. How bout this, if he becomes an MLB regular I’ll personally send him a letter on our behalf apologizing for underestimating his value on draft night when Crow-Armstong, Sabato and others were still ln the board.

I'm hopeful Bloom and company will find some nice players round 3-5, but overslot darlings like Keene and Quintana who never signed make me jaded with this strategy.

I think the big difference here is we will most likely be dangling a million dollar carrot in front of the 3-5 guys. Quintana and Keene were not likely to get that much.
