Valdez/Springs placeholders for ERod/Darwinzon ? No Johnson is a surprise (to me).

Roenicke said 4th starter will be an opener (I'd guess probably Hall or Springs) and 5th starter will be a traditional starter yet to be announced.
My guess is that'll be Johnson or Godley, perhaps the former the first turn and the latter the second turn after getting one "start" in Pawtucket to stretch out.

Maybe Johnson and Godley aren't on the staff because neither is on the 40 man. If either of them made it then somebody would have to be DFAed when the three Covid pitchers return.

Prior to the Covid announcement there was an Athletic article that mentioned that ERod and Eovaldi were two pitchers that had been ramping up during private workouts. ERod wouldn't have to be 100% stretched to start his first couple of games.

That is a pretty sad looking roster top to bottom. Obviously in a better world Sale and E-Rod are on the staff, but this is bleak. I cannot see myself watching much this year. Between the roster, the empty seats, the mini-schedule.... hard to be excited about anything. And hard to be optimistic looking forward. Could be wilderness years.

I tweeted this, but I think they're delaying DFAing guys so that teams aren't as likely to put claims in. They were able to add Covey on a whim (the release made clear they added him to the 40-man yesterday, which makes me think that's what they needed to do to keep him because of his assignment clause). I think they have guys they're willing to DFA to get at least one of those two on the roster, they're just putting off doing so.

Posted this in the other thread, but also consider: 1) Darwinzon and Taylor also on the IL. That's 4 of their top 6 pitchers out. 2) Consider that a 15-man staff has 2 guys who wouldn't make a normal 26-man roster, so that's 2 (or 3, if you think of it as transitioning from a 12-man staff on a 25-man roster) guys who wouldn't usually make the team. 3) Godley and/or Johnson are likely up shortly.

Carson Fulmer DFA by CWS. Wonder if the Sox will take a flyer.

Carson Fulmer DFA by CWS. Wonder if the Sox will take a flyer. I'm hoping so. World's better talent wise than either Johnson, or Godley and an actual starter instead of someone who goes out there as an opener. one guy who is still young enough to find himself. please sign the guy.

I wonder what's going on there. It seems strange with Kopech out for the season. It hasn't been all that long since Fulmer was considered a future star.

Well hopefully we can just make it through the season without any major illness problems to coaches or players.

Not sure why Tzu-Wei Lin keeps losing his #5 (this time to Kevin Pillar). Hope he at least got a steak dinner out of it.

Johnson and Godley have been far better MLB pitchers over their careers (it's not close) and Fulmer pitched in the bullpen last year. He's got a prospect pedigree, but he's got an ERA over 6.50 in nearly 100 MLB innings and has walked more than 6 hitters per 9. Claiming him would be taking a flyer on the guy, and it wouldn't be as a starter I don't think.

Yeah, I know Fulmer has huge prospect pedigree, but in terms of actual results, he's had very little since Vandy. It looks like Chicago really rushed him to the upper minors, where he's been pretty bad. All that said, I wouldn't hate having him in Pawtucket throwing sim innings, working on ironing out his mechanics in the reliever only profile. Add: Worth noting that Boston drafted him out of high school. Probably doesn't mean much since he didn't sign, and that it was a few front office regimes ago, but it might give them a slight inside track to bringing him in.

He'd be a waiver claim, so it's not the player's choice.

Does he still have a mid-90s fastball? I guess the thing that makes him appealing over those other guys is projection (if, that is, there is still the stuff there once was). But, yeah, at some point one does just have to say this guy might not happen.
