As soon as the season ends I want Mazza out of here. I really hope they clean out a few of these guys.
His first 5 hitters:
BB SO BB 96.8 EV, .830 xBA 96.3 EV, .730 xBA
After that:
85.3, .240, GO
SO
76.5, .050, GO
SO 97.3, .350 (because of high launch angle), FO
83.4, .910 (cheap bloop single) 94.8, .220 FO SO SO
He's a starting pitcher who was relieving for the first time in weeks.
The first 5 batters include the only two guys who made serious contact with him (and at the very minimum for true hard contact at that) and the only two walks he issued.
He went from a 12.18 pERA to a -1.75. (Yes, the metric works for any sample size, as long as you convert Launch Angles below 12, the worst possible, into their positive equivalents).
Gee ... you think maybe he wasn't warmed up properly?
Or did he go from completely awful to totally dominant just by accident?
Given the innings he can give you, I think he edges Valdez as the best of Bloom's pitching finds.
Yeah... but what makes you say that?!?!?

I watched Mazza's first inning and he got squeezed very badly. He had numerous pitches which appeared to be strikes which were called balls.

Verdugo n Boegarts sit today. Arroyo and Lin are in Perez LHP Interesting strategy: sit your two best players on the same day. Certainly plays to part of this board’s audience.

I always think Tsutsugo sounds like the name of a sailor on the Pequod.

When Perez is on, his fastball/ change 2 pitch combo is pretty much enough. It is amazing, but his change at its best is nasty.

I always think Tsutsugo sounds like the name of a sailor on the Pequod. The Prime Minister of Japan is stepping down for health reasons and his replacement's first name is Suga. People from Mass should find that sweet.

Rafael "Tank-Buster" Devers. He refuses to let this team be too dreadful.
ADD: JD "The Tank" Martinez. Though I suppose he technically got an rbi there.

At least jd is buying in hopefully that is why he has been so bad. These other guys need a talking too. On the plus side we can roll out 5-6 different options to let the rays back in this thing.

What is with the Rays? When we needed to beat them they beat us. Now when we need them to beat us they are losing. Do they exist just to foil the Sox?

You guys know by now that I love to calculate the odds of splits being random.
So, before 2019 Christian Arroyo had 26 professional home runs in 2006 career PA.
He now has 12 in his last 209.
The odds of getting that split in a random simulation based on his total career HR rate are ... wait for it ....
400,178 to 1.
Continued later today in the 2021 thread, where he (and Munoz) have quickly become complicating factors of the kind you like to have.

This stat is sure leaning heavily on the fact that he had 8 homers in AAA last season. Not sure if I can quite will myself to get excited about that.

Devers is truly a freak..he hit this pitch 113mph. The two past players that come to mind who were great bad ball hitters like this are Clemente and Vlad Guererro. Pretty good company. Raffy has freakish abilities at the plate. Hated parting with Moncada but at least DD hung on to our little Raffy.
