I don’t remember, and I’m not being difficult, but in, say, the last 20 years, have the Sox had another guy who was considered the number #1 prospect (even non-consensus)? Was X or Devers or Betts etc ever there? And this is not about *actual quality* — some guys jump the line, like Betts who was here to stay so fast he couldn’t be ranked like that. I know it is meaningless. I am curious about it simply as a point of interest. Matsuzaka was ranked #1 by BBA Moncada was ranked #2 by BBA in the off-season when we traded him Dice-K? Wow! I did not know that. Moncada, I figured. He was #2 behind Beni on the list I posted earlier. Did he ever hit #1? He must have after he he hit Chicago, no?

I really doubt Benintendi gets traded. The Red Sox will need a left handed complement to Renfro, and that gives Benintendi more value to the Red Sox than what they can get for him. At this point he would bring back a midland prospect at best, so why dump Beni. Bloom has yet to give away a player that has more value than what he will receive (especially when you look at CONTROLLABILITY). If Beni goes you only have Devers and Verdugo as left handed hitting starters, so they would need to acquire a left handed hitting outfielder.....

Red Sox in serious trade talks with several teams about Benintendi... I am sure they are in several trade talks about a lot of players. they have to improve the team and it will trade talk and free agent signings, but I see a a lot of worry that we will be snokkered in a pending deal. Workman and Hembree for Pivetta and Seabold and Moreland for Rosario and Potts not to mention the deal for wallace for Pillar. I don't think that Bloom is blind to making good deals.the deal with Philly turned out even better than expected by us, but I think Bloom saw the flaws in our pitchers.

Workman had one really good year (2019) and Bloom traded Workman and Hembree for maximum value. He got max value for Moreland and Pillar, too. I think that Bloom will maximize whatever value Beni has if he trades him. Assuming Bloom trades Beni and signs Eddie Rosario to play left field, he still either needs to sign a CF or move Verdugo to CF and sign a preferably left handed hitter to pair with Renfro. The other possibility is simply keep Beni and sign Rosario. I have confidence that if Bloom does not get a good deal for Beni, then he will not trade him.

But I’m not sure now is a time when they have much leverage. Those trades you cite came near the deadline when teams were desperate — this isn’t a time when those sort of deals are as likely to materialize. Not yet, at least.

Matsuzaka was ranked #1 by BBA Moncada was ranked #2 by BBA in the off-season when we traded him Wasn't Bogaerts 1-2 with Byron Buxton at one point? yes he was. From Baseball Cube, here are all Red Sox ranked in BBA start of season top 10 since 1990. This covers 31 years of rankings. If each team was equally likely to place a player in the top 10, we would expect the Sox to have had 10 players in the BBA top 10s over this period. They had 12. 2017 Beni #1 2017 Moncada #2 (ranked with CWS shortly after being traded from BOS) 2016 Moncada #3 2014 Xander #2 2013 Xander #8 2008 Buchholz #4 2007 Matsuzaka #1 2005 Hanley #10 1998 Pavano #9 (ranked with MON shortly after being traded from BOS) 1997 Nomar #10 1992 Frankie Rodriguez #9 1991 Mo Vaughn #10 Special mention for Andy Marte. Prior to 2005 Marte was ranked #9 while with ATL. In Dec 2005 he was traded from ATL to BOS. In Jan 2006 BOS traded him to CLE.

He rose too fast to remain there in the offseason the year he made his debut, but he likely would've. And yes, electricityverdugo is right - his hit tool in Portland was ahead of Benintendi. Good point. Didn't see much of Pedroia in the minors but I wouldn't put him up there anyway. He topped out at #77 on BA's list.

Just something when considering all the benintendi talk. Jon Morosi says Braves looking for left fielder. Don’t know why they would just buy one but.

That’s why I think a the Sox match up so well with the Braves. Benintendi alone won’t bring much back, but if they could move Inciarte, it would make sense for the Braves. It only makes sense for the Sox if they can land a couple of decent prospects.

It only makes sense for the Sox if they can land a couple of decent prospects. If the Sox really are looking for a new LFer...Manny Ramirez is available. Who would want Benintendi and would be willing to take him without the Sox paying his salary? If his performance level over the last 1.5 years is indicative of his likely performance going forward, then he is replacement value and not worth his contract. Where he does have some value is in the potential that he could get back to where he was 2016-2018. He is only 26 years old so there is certainly some possibility of that occurring. So who might want him? A team who needs a LFer. However, team who thinks they are a serious contender next year will likely not want to take the chance on him getting back to form - at least not so long as they could just sign a Eddie Rosario. So its probably noncontenders. The team will also need to have some monetary flexibility because he is probably getting at least 6MM per year going forward. So need LFer, noncontender, some monetary flexibility. That sounds like the Red Sox actually. Still hoping they could work something out with the Cubs for Beni plus for Bryant.

Can't argue that though Jason Bay did a good job with the Sox. I honestly think the injuries to Beckett and Lowell is what prevented the Sox from advancing to back-to-back World Series. The Lowell injury really hurt because it forced the Sox to move Youks to 3b and play Mark Kotsay at 1b, and Kotsay almost single handedly cost them the 2008 ALCS. He stranded a small village of baserunners in that series. I think the downgrade from 2007 Lowell to Kotsay hurt them way more than the downgrade from Manny to Bay. That said, Manny did shoot his way off the team. I do think Manny has mellowed and has changed his ways for the better. The real problem with Manny today is that the man who could barely play LF in 2008 - well let's just say unless they plan to move the Green Monster right behind SS, I wouldn't want to see Manny in the field....and let's face it, his bat is probably something we'd be sad to see. He is almost 49 years old. Doubt the bat speed is still there.

Benni + $$ should net a decent prospect. Why trade a big leaguer who has had success at the MLB level with still a ton of potential for only a “decent” prospect? This decent prospect might not even make the big leagues
