4.5 million for Perez with a 6 million dollar club option. I like the move.

That contract is another Chaim Bloom special. Solid value on a one year deal and oh by the way there's a cheap club option that once in a while will provide a huge amount of surplus value if Perez surprises everyone and pitches better than anticipated.

I’m ok with Perez coming back.. Now take the 1.85 Mill we saved from declining his option and go get a legitimate reliever

Saved a little over 1 million by declining his option earlier this offseason so at least they have that going for them. I don't mind the move at all. They needed two starters so now it's just 1.

I thought he was decent last year.

What is a “Chaim Bloom special”? I mean, what has he done that creates this category? I’m not anti-Bloom, but I continue to he baffled by these sorts of assessment. He resigns a guy from last years’ team and it is unusually impressive? Was resigning Robbie Ray a Mark Shapiro special? I get wanting to see lottery picks as winners. Perez is a solid signing, and he’ll be a good back end starter. But I’m waiting for the miracle move that justifies the Bloomdulation. He’s done... fine. Nothing that warrants viewing him as a wunderkind, though.

Would that be the same club option that the Sox declined 4-months ago?

As of right now the rotation is looking like Erod, eovaldi, perez, pivetta, Houck or the other depth guys we saw last year. That's definitely better than what they had going into last season. They are more than likely going to add another starter too. Is Pérez an amazing addition? No. Does Pérez add value? Yes. It's a fine signing. Let's see what else they do now before declaring this offseason a disaster.

It's smart, but I think it's less a 'Chaim Bloom Special' and more a 'Chaim Bloom doesn't think the team can compete for a championship next year so he's filling roster spots while focusing on 2022'. Hopefully a couple of these deals turn into bargains in 2022.

But if (and I don’t think anyone expects it) that *were* the rotation, you’d have to call it at least disappointing.

After Kluber to the Yankees though there's been so much doom and gloom how the Sox have missed out on everyone and that this upcoming season will be just as bad of a team as last year. I think some people need to take a step back from the ledge and have a bit of patience. There's a lot of talent available in free agency still that can help the team. Let's at least wait and see who is on the team come spring training before complaining they haven't done anything.

I like Martin Perez and think he is a serviceable pitcher. Probably their most dependable 2020 starter.
This move is at least "PlanD". They missed on Sugano, Kluber, and most likely now realize Odorizzi is signing elsewhere. Four months ago they declined Perez's option and all we heard (in this very thread) was what a smart move that was. Now they resign him ($1.8M cheaper) and that constitutes a great move? They now have the same rotation as last season which produced a last place finish.

They'll more than likely sign another starter too.

1 year/$4.5M plus 2022 $6M option w/$500K buy out. He's guaranteed $5M so does that bring his AAV down to $2.5M? Either way, still a solid signing.

Perez wasn't the problem last year. The problem last year was our utter lack of depth. Perez is reliable and will take the ball every fifth day and will keep the team in the game. I like this move too, especially if it means we have 1 more starter signing as well.

Unless the expectation was the bring in 2 of Bauer, Sugano, Kluber and JO, it's a solid signing. If he's the big SP acquisition, it will be a disappointing off season for me. However, I'm waiting for all the pieces to be in place before judging and I'd rather not sign a guy than ink a bad deal.
