Hey now, with a lack of emergency SS depth, there's a free option out there.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but these weren't conditional terms that were agreed upon. We should get a player regardless if he was able to stick. The trade was announced as a PTBNL or cash. We don't know the conditions of the trade, but it could just be cash. We probably won't know until the deadline to receive a PTNBL passes (usually six months). This. I never expected to get a player here.

When cash is exchanged for a player like Chatham, and the number doesn't come out publicly, is there a guesstimation on what the number was?

Does anyone know if there is an update on what we are getting back? Not that I’m expecting much of anything, but just curious. I imagine the deadline is soon.

I imagine the deadline is soon. 6 months from the trade would take us to mid-July. We're probably looking at $ (which might not even get announced?) or a fringe prospect (I'm thinking of the recent Aybar-Koss and Osich-Bryant trades).

As I said like 3 posts up, I'd be stunned if it wasn't money.

Fangraphs has him as their #38 prospect. Looks like he's relieved in A+ before being promoted to AA. He's started for Reading since.

How on earth does Chaim do this??? He's Rule 5 eligible. Nobody wants these marginal prospects that need to take a 40 man spot.

Looks like he pitched against the Sea Dogs on Wednesday, so the Sox got a good look at him. Went 5IP, 6H, 4ER, 1BB, 3K. Casas hit a HR off him.

Yeah, still seems like a coup. They can take a look at him and maybe see if they think he has a chance to make next year's pen.
Maybe the league wide 40 man roster crunch is such that you don't even have to worry about protecting him.

I’ll throw a Denyi Reyes comp on him just cuz I want to, literally zero insight beyond him being a guy that gets up to AA early with meh stuff and good control

Yeah I don't know that it's a coup in a vacuum. I'm just surprised they got something for Chatham.

Does he profile as an up and down bullpen reserve? Sounds like he is not a likely Rule 5 loss, and not much chance that he cracks the forty man list.

Definitely doesn’t fit the mold of someone you’d think you have to protect. He could be interesting. Fangraphs has a 60 FG on what they call his splitter (someone said it’s more like a split-change) with a 50 FG slider. The fastball is a current and future 35, so he could be a guy that pitches off his offspeed stuff like our Valdez or the Orioles Valdez. Not a high ceiling, but he made it to AA before he turned 21 so there’s that at least. The results have been solid so far, it’ll really just depend how he looks the rest of this year with meh stuff against AA hitting. Considering this is the return for Chatham, I’m pretty happy with the deal.

Chatham hasn't even done anything with the Iron Pigs, either. It appears that... wait for it... he's been injured for the past month and a half.

Could be wrong I just checked and he was released then re-signed. The injuries are certainly on-brand Either way, when’s the emergency podcast Chris?

Did anyone else here see this thread bumped up and sigh, fully anticipating yet another "when are they getting the PTBNL" question... then be stunned that they actually got something more than cash?

Well, I remember Chatham as having a pretty decent contact stick...not much power for good sized guy...but not a chump. I could see him making it in a utility type roll or back end bench guy.
