I'm surprised at how low folks here seem to have gotten on Davis. People seemed to hear Kiley's discussion on the podcast as a negative take on him, but I really didn't; it seemed to me more like "Davis is amazing but if you had to search out some flaws here's what you could say..." If Leiter or the shortstops had been the focus of the conversation I think he could have done the same with them.
I will be absolutely content with whoever Bloom & Co. chooses, including an underslot deal (unless it's a high school pitcher). But if I were to order them by how excited I would be to hear their names called at #4, I might go:
Davis Mayer Watson Leiter Lawlar Rocker House 1. Hearing that his swing is strength-based and not bat-speed-based is worrying, because that means he'll be more vulnerable to elite velocity. 2. He struck out 34 percent of his at-bats in college this year. He had more Ks than hits. That's also worrying. 3. If robo umps aren't in the next CBA, he's probably going to have to move to a corner, which makes the bat caveats a lot more important. He had 24 Ks in 184 ABs, so way less than 34%.
I'm more optimistic than others seem to be about his sticking behind the plate. I mean, I know absolutely nothing, but 1) I have heard knowledgeable people say that they think he can stick; 2) he seems to have a real drive to improve himself; 3) doesn't seem like anything Varitek can't fix.
I'm also more sanguine than others about him even if he does have to move. He has a great arm, which is a good start to building a useful defensive profile. And he's the best college hitter regardless of position anyways.
And finally, it's clear that others are really in MVP-type or bust mode on this pick, whereas I would be totally content with getting just a solid regular out of it. That would, after all, be better than all but about 8 #4 picks that have been taken since 1975.

On a late side note, James Triantos (MLB #78) says he worked out for the Red Sox.

Harold Reynolds still having a job is like Internet Explorer asking to be my main browser. I'm kind of stunned that he survived cancel culture given his internal reputation...but thats another story for another day. Go with Leiter, Rocker, or one of the HS SS and I'll be happy.

This is how it’s going to go:
1) Henry Davis 2) Jack Leiter 3) Marcelo Mayer 4) Matt McClain
My last prediction before the draft.

An underslot deal for Davis at 1 would be a tough break for Red Sox at 4. Don’t know why Texas wouldn’t draft Leiter at two, and there is no way Mayer drops past Detroit. I would really hope Boston does the right thing and goes heavy underslot at 4 if it plays out that way.

I think it's a bad idea to go underslot probably. Take one of those top 5 or 6 guys and be done with it. We need elite talent. I'd consider Jobe if he's willing to go underslot. What is the slot for the Sox at # 4? ) Around $4 mil maybe for him would be tough to pass on I would think as a high schooler with the Sox org.

Two thoughts on Leiter.
Of course he's just bluffing about going back to Vandy if the Rangers take him. But why would you want to bring a guy into an organization with him really pissed at you?r organization? Terrible idea.
Is it possible that Leiter wants to play for the Sox so much that he would go slightly under slot, say, taking slot 5 money (480K less)? It's certainly possible that the Sox have told him, "we haven't finished our draft board and you're in the top 3" (a true statement even if he's #1 at the time, and not dishonest if that's by a slight margin and has been changed a few times already), "but cut us a bit of a deal and it's done."
But I also like to think that they think he has clear ace upside rather than #2.
Meh. A lot of guys get drafted by teams they don’t want to join. Millions of dollars and the chance to add to that heals most wounds. I doubt anyone is morally opposed to the Rangers.

Remember when Dan O'Dowd said last year that the Sox were maybe picking Yorke just not to sign him and keep that pick for 2021 draft? I do 😂😂😂

I don't think the Rangers should be worried about Leiter holding a grudge against them ("Ugh, I hate them for thinking I was the best player available!"), but I could sort of imagine them taking into account a somewhat lower likelihood of his staying on as a free agent or signing an extension, when the time comes. Not a huge factor (and who's to say he wouldn't grow to love the charms of the Metroplex?), but something that might make him slightly less valuable to them.
