Don't think we have a dedicated non-draft Mayer thread. I leave it to you all to figure out a better title...

Will he see time in Salem this year? I would have assumed so and he appears to be playing more than well enough, but we're starting to run out of time.

If it’s where management intends to start him in 2022, then they absolutely should get his feet wet in Salem. Even a week or so would help with his familiarity of the area, ballpark, etc.

Casas only had 4 AB in the GCL before he got injured and he started the following year in low A. Yorke was at the alternate site and then started this year in Salem; Jordan had 69 AB in the FCL before getting promoted and Marcelo is at 51. I’d be very surprised if he didn’t start next spring in Salem.

He's seeing pitching astoundingly better than he saw in high school a couple of months ago and is adapting quite nicely!

Mayer needs a promotion. Let him finish the year in Salem. Easily the best prospect in the system.
I still think he’s a late 2023 guy. Special talent.

Swing and body type remind me of a young Benintendi, dare I say it.

I noticed on the Cup of Coffee (thank you Jim) that Mayer just had his 10th error of the season; in 19 games. Has anyone had a chance to scout his defense? What seems to be causing the errors?

I dunno, he’s only batting averaging .240. 🤪

Pete Abraham article in September 11 Globe:
"Pitching and lack of power are the biggest issues [for the Arizona Diamondbacks]. Losing top prospects Corbin Carroll and Jordan Lawler to shoulder injuries was a blow, too. Lawler was injured two games into his professional career after being the sixth overall pick. The shortstop is a foundational talent, but the immediate setback was typical of what Arizona has endured this season."
The Sox should feel doubly fortunate to have chosen Mayer. Lawler may well have been a close second on their draft board.

Which is not surprising given that he is quite old and that's a think they value.
I wonder if they would've taken Rocker (who Law suggested they liked) if Detroit had taken Mayer? Would they have ended up in the same boat as the Mets? Surely they wouldn't have failed to sign their first and second rounders...

I doesn't seem like Law has very reliable sources within the current Red Sox organization. While, my opinion may be misguided, we can only take Law's texts as a barometer for his understanding of the organization's prospect philosophies. Regarding Mayer, outside of scouting stat lines and internalizing industry analyses, I'd have to assume that Law's personal list of top Red Sox prospects (including Mayer) will differ greatly from Soxprospects.

On the upside, Twitter has given everyone a voice. On the downside, some of those voices have almost nothing useful to add to the conversation. One of the comments compares the swing to JD Drew's, but adds the hope that Mayer "pans out better than that". If Marcelo Mayer can accrue 45 career wins I'll bet the teams he ends up playing for would be ecstatic.
Drew did that while the sheath on his spine had started to unravel. Not much doubt in my mind that had he been able to average more than the 120 games a year he did, and to have played past age 35, he'd be a candidate for the HoF.
Mayer has all the hallmarks of a big leaguer. Drew was a very good one.

It’s a pretty swing. He has that classic lefty power stroke where he drops the bat on plane and generates upward momentum. Ted Williams was an extreme example of that style.

THAT is a pretty swing. Only BP but almost nothing goes backward, everything going forward with impressively hard contact. Can't wait to see him in first full pro season. Hopefully that happens.
Tangential and different threads bleeding into one here but... Casas, Yorke, Duran, Mayer elite makeup, and hopefully impact players, already in system. Freili Encarnacion is supposed to be off the charts elite makeup and leadership. Love the potential leadership going here. Love the fact that the FO values this because in 182 game schedule chemistry matters. This is an important attribute to have.

The manner in which he talks about it goes beyond the typical lip service of "he's a great kid, etc."

I love how balanced he is, finishing almost every hack standing straight up with his feet in control, still forming a nice triangle with his head. He really sticks the landing.

Crap, prospectlove I accidentally deleted your post when trying to move it to the Draft thread. Not intentional. Sorry!

Jen McCaffrey did a story on Mayer for the Athletic today. This piece stood out to me. "A dedicated nutrition plan and weight-training program helped Mayer add 12 pounds of muscle, bringing him to about 200 pounds on his 6-foot-3 frame with plenty of room to grow." Really good to hear that he is already starting to fill out
